Hiring Mike Brown was bad. So was hiring D'Antoni for the roster they had. As Sammy already mentioned - I thought we don't like Phil around here anymore? Mightn't that be a plus? The bartender deal was bad, I don't know that that guy is around anymore, it's a bad thing regardless. Turns out the Nash deal was terrible in retrospect, but I don't remember too many around here criticizing it at the time - seemed like more people thought they had a championship locked up at that point.

The guy's made mistakes, no question. He was in over his head to start. If you're going to give him credit for all that stuff, you also have to give him credit for the Chris Paul deal and the Dwight Howard deal. The true test of whether he's an idiot or not is whether he can learn from his mistakes. Those tests are happening right now. Let's see how it goes.

Put it this way, just comparing Duke players in the draft, Okafor and Winslow are better prospects than Parker.

Yeah, I'm not buying this whole Phil as coach vs Phil as GM thing. He hasn't really done anything unreasonable as GM yet. Signing the max deal for Melo looks terrible now but as the GM of the Knicks in the summer of 2014 you really don't have any choice on that. The criticism is mostly the on court stuff- his insistence on the Knicks running the triangle, his criticism of jump shooting/3 point shooting teams, etc. I don't think you want Phil as your coach in the current era. I don't know if the Lakers lucked into avoiding him or if they made a bold call to hire someone else over him, but either way I don't think it's fair to criticize them for not hiring him. Other things, sure, but not that.

It was mainly an ego deal. Jimmy wanted to run the show, roster building wise. Phil wanted to be more than just coach (like what he's doing now for Knicks), and Jimmy was never going to make room for that. So I wouldn't call it a bold call, but it was a deliberate decision not to bring him back (and then have to resort to hiring clowns like Brown and D'Antoni).

Yes. By a good amount. Even before next year's draft, where the Sixers have two more high picks and the Lakers (probably) don't have any.

That ESPN article about the Sixers was pretty eye-opening in terms of the culture they're building, and how they've gotten players to buy in. Awful? He appeared lost at times, but he was a 19 yr old freshman who wasn't in pro shape.

He's the only freshman in ACC history to win POY. Give him a year with Kobe to get in shape, and I think he'll be average at worst, with a lot of upside based on his great feet and basketball IQ.

He's a temp. He's good with the discipline, effort, conditioning, defense, and he's relatively cheap, which is what they need right now. I like how he didn't take any nonsense from Boozer and Young this year. I think he had a positive impact on Clarkson, he really developed a solid work ethic. Once they develop the youngsters a bit I imagine they bring in someone else, Byron usually wears out his welcome with the players in short order (because of the things he's decent at).

I feel like the trend in today's NBA is defense-first centers who can protect the rim, and I have some worries about Okafor's ability to fit that mold. Or if they play him with another big he'd get torched by a stretch 4 and might present spacing problems on the other end. Looking at the current Final Four, all four play stretch 4s and three of them use their bigs primarily as defenders. Only Horford brings as much to the table on offense as he does on defense, and his game only works because his mid-range game is so absurdly good that it defenses can't default to giving the offense the shot they way they do with other teams/players.

Okafor reminds me a lot of a more sure-handed Nene, who is still talented and smart but is getting squeezed out by the state of the game. Although he also refuses to play the 5, and I'm sure Okafor will be more flexible. Also he's not even a rookie yet- the game changes so fast that maybe a post scorer will be the hot thing to have in four years when he's reaching his prime.

He has 3/36 left, which is a lot if he's going to continue to be hurt all of the time (probably), but not if he can stay on the court. Seems a likely trade candidate though.

I mean, there should be plenty of mins for Pek, Dieng and Towns. Especially since they'll probably coddle Pek as much as they can with 20-25mpg. I guess the question is if you're actually going to put Garnett on the court much. Not much time leftover for Anthony Bennett either.

None of this should be a concern or should sway them away from going big here though.

. As a Knicks fan he is one of the few guys I would be ok trading the #4 pick for. Greek Freak and not Randle just to be clear. Randle is injury prone and a rich mans Joey Dorsey not a franchise cornerstone.
