I don't think you or I really know what Buss/Kupchack have in mind long term for the Lakers.
I don't, but Buss is an idiot. So I'm not counting on much.
Again with Westbrook, or with any max FA, it comes down to them leaving a bunch of money on the table to leave their own team. How many software engineers are leaving Uber or Google to go work at AOL for 20% less money?
I'm not ready to concede that Buss is an idiot yet. Another really bad decision on his part and I'm probably with you on that. Signing Rondo would put me firmly in your camp on this.
Leaving money on the table? You mean like LeBron James did? In Westbrook's case, it seems like he really wants to play in Los Angeles (or at least not Oklahoma City), based on things mentioned in the media. We'll see when the time comes.
Lebron signed short-term so he could get a max contract when the cap jumps. If he'd stayed with Miami, he likely would've done the same thing. So he's really only taking a hit on a couple of years. And he already has a big contract under his belt and a ton of money in endorsements, point being that the money he left on the table probably isn't as big of a deal to him.
It's obviously not impossible, I'm just saying that a player's home team is fighting from the high ground.
You cannot rule out the possibility that the Lakers overpay a bunch of mediocre FA's for Kobe's Last Ride. They already gave him that insane extension, it doesn't seem like anything can be taken off the table at this point.
