Okafur already with quotes angling to be passed by the Timberwolves.

"Hype about going first is more for the fans"

"I don't know that I should go first, I don't care, just want to go to the right environment"
Hard to blame him. He's either going to NBA purgatory or Mecca. He and Towns will both show up hung over and throw their Wolves workouts.
Why don't you #### off?

I don't think you or I really know what Buss/Kupchack have in mind long term for the Lakers.
I don't, but Buss is an idiot. So I'm not counting on much.

Again with Westbrook, or with any max FA, it comes down to them leaving a bunch of money on the table to leave their own team. How many software engineers are leaving Uber or Google to go work at AOL for 20% less money?
I'm not ready to concede that Buss is an idiot yet. Another really bad decision on his part and I'm probably with you on that. Signing Rondo would put me firmly in your camp on this.

Leaving money on the table? You mean like LeBron James did? In Westbrook's case, it seems like he really wants to play in Los Angeles (or at least not Oklahoma City), based on things mentioned in the media. We'll see when the time comes.
Lebron signed short-term so he could get a max contract when the cap jumps. If he'd stayed with Miami, he likely would've done the same thing. So he's really only taking a hit on a couple of years. And he already has a big contract under his belt and a ton of money in endorsements, point being that the money he left on the table probably isn't as big of a deal to him.

It's obviously not impossible, I'm just saying that a player's home team is fighting from the high ground.

You cannot rule out the possibility that the Lakers overpay a bunch of mediocre FA's for Kobe's Last Ride. They already gave him that insane extension, it doesn't seem like anything can be taken off the table at this point.
You're right about this. And if that happens I'll agree, Buss is an idiot. Since it hasn't happened yet, I'm still hopeful he's not.

And in general, I agree about the home town advantage. I get a sense that Westbrook might be an exception to that, but we'll see. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Durant leave money on the table to go to the Wizards.
Hiring Mike Brown, running off Phil, giving Kobe that extension, hiring one of his buddies who was a bartender to be a scout, the Nash trade...you're still not sure?

OK, let's say the Wolves prefer Towns but also like Okafor.

And let's say Towns wants to engineer his way to LA, as has been reported today (who knows if the report is accurate).

What would it take in a trade for the Lakers to get Towns?

I do love that the Lakers get criticized for running Phil off, but then everyone portrays him as some bumbling idiot with the Knicks. Which is it?

Did you read his comments about jump shooting teams? He's going to be the worst (best!) GM.

There is also a very high chance this pick gets straight up stolen from him.

Hiring Mike Brown was bad. So was hiring D'Antoni for the roster they had. As Sammy already mentioned - I thought we don't like Phil around here anymore? Mightn't that be a plus? The bartender deal was bad, I don't know that that guy is around anymore, it's a bad thing regardless. Turns out the Nash deal was terrible in retrospect, but I don't remember too many around here criticizing it at the time - seemed like more people thought they had a championship locked up at that point.

The guy's made mistakes, no question. He was in over his head to start. If you're going to give him credit for all that stuff, you also have to give him credit for the Chris Paul deal and the Dwight Howard deal. The true test of whether he's an idiot or not is whether he can learn from his mistakes. Those tests are happening right now. Let's see how it goes.

Phil as coach, Phil as GM.
This.

Phil was a great motivator and manager of egos, but even as a coach I don't think he was ever an Xs and Os genius - he had Tex Winter for that.

None of his best skills really translate to GM and the game seems to be passing him by strategically.

Okafor's not a better prospect than Embiid, unless you are docking Embiid for gaining weight last year and other rumored shenanigans.
We'll have to disagree on that. This talent is this draft is more similar overall to 2003 and 2008 than last year. There are multiple guys in the draft that may one day be all-NBA talent/All-Stars. You can't say that about anyone (even Wiggins) from last years draft.

Put it this way, just comparing Duke players in the draft, Okafor and Winslow are better prospects than Parker.
I think you are forgetting the hype Embiid was getting last year. Duncan/Olajuwon comparisons.
I remember the Olajuwon upside comparisons, but not Duncan. Okafor seems much more Duncan-like than Embiid, IMO.
:lmao: We'll just set aside Okafor's awful defense then

Yeah, I'm not buying this whole Phil as coach vs Phil as GM thing. He hasn't really done anything unreasonable as GM yet. Signing the max deal for Melo looks terrible now but as the GM of the Knicks in the summer of 2014 you really don't have any choice on that. The criticism is mostly the on court stuff- his insistence on the Knicks running the triangle, his criticism of jump shooting/3 point shooting teams, etc. I don't think you want Phil as your coach in the current era. I don't know if the Lakers lucked into avoiding him or if they made a bold call to hire someone else over him, but either way I don't think it's fair to criticize them for not hiring him. Other things, sure, but not that.

I don't know if the Lakers lucked into avoiding him or if they made a bold call to hire someone else over him,
It was mainly an ego deal. Jimmy wanted to run the show, roster building wise. Phil wanted to be more than just coach (like what he's doing now for Knicks), and Jimmy was never going to make room for that. So I wouldn't call it a bold call, but it was a deliberate decision not to bring him back (and then have to resort to hiring clowns like Brown and D'Antoni).

Aside from the Rondo situation (I'm firmly in the DO NOT SIGN camp), biggest question now for me for the Lakers is what do they do at coach? Scott just seems like a dumpster fire to me.

Yes. By a good amount. Even before next year's draft, where the Sixers have two more high picks and the Lakers (probably) don't have any.

That ESPN article about the Sixers was pretty eye-opening in terms of the culture they're building, and how they've gotten players to buy in. At the least, they seem well-organized and they're highly analytical. http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/12318808/the-philadelphia-76ers-radical-guide-winning

I agree that they're going to face the same challenges in terms of luring FA's, but I also think that they're wise enough to pass on players like Rondo (always gotta love a PG who doesn't get to the line and doesn't shoot 3's) and only break the bank open on guys that are going to be difference-makers.
Shouldn't the 76ers actually, like, win something before we declare them some kind of blueprint for success?
A good blueprint doesn't guarantee anything. But I think the Sixers' plan makes a lot more sense than LA's or NY's.
NY has a plan?

Awful? He appeared lost at times, but he was a 19 yr old freshman who wasn't in pro shape.

He's the only freshman in ACC history to win POY. Give him a year with Kobe to get in shape, and I think he'll be average at worst, with a lot of upside based on his great feet and basketball IQ.

He's a temp. He's good with the discipline, effort, conditioning, defense, and he's relatively cheap, which is what they need right now. I like how he didn't take any nonsense from Boozer and Young this year. I think he had a positive impact on Clarkson, he really developed a solid work ethic. Once they develop the youngsters a bit I imagine they bring in someone else, Byron usually wears out his welcome with the players in short order (because of the things he's decent at).

While I don't think Okafor's defense is good, I don't necessarily think Towns' was necessarily great either. Yes he got blocks, etc, but he was a fouling machine in college (good depth will allow that). I sort of worry what happens when he needs to stay on the court for 33-36 minutes a night.

Wolves also have the #31 and #36 picks. Let's hope they don't do their classic move "trade down for cash" as those picks can be pretty valuable for a foreign guy/ncaa vet-type/first round sliders.

Assuming they draft one of the centers, what happens to Pekovic? Maybe his deal will look cheap for somebody now that the cap will be raised?

I feel like the trend in today's NBA is defense-first centers who can protect the rim, and I have some worries about Okafor's ability to fit that mold. Or if they play him with another big he'd get torched by a stretch 4 and might present spacing problems on the other end. Looking at the current Final Four, all four play stretch 4s and three of them use their bigs primarily as defenders. Only Horford brings as much to the table on offense as he does on defense, and his game only works because his mid-range game is so absurdly good that it defenses can't default to giving the offense the shot they way they do with other teams/players.

Okafor reminds me a lot of a more sure-handed Nene, who is still talented and smart but is getting squeezed out by the state of the game. Although he also refuses to play the 5, and I'm sure Okafor will be more flexible. Also he's not even a rookie yet- the game changes so fast that maybe a post scorer will be the hot thing to have in four years when he's reaching his prime.

Wolves also have the #31 and #36 picks. Let's hope they don't do their classic move "trade down for cash" as those picks can be pretty valuable for a foreign guy/ncaa vet-type/first round sliders.

He has 3/36 left, which is a lot if he's going to continue to be hurt all of the time (probably), but not if he can stay on the court. Seems a likely trade candidate though.

I mean, there should be plenty of mins for Pek, Dieng and Towns. Especially since they'll probably coddle Pek as much as they can with 20-25mpg. I guess the question is if you're actually going to put Garnett on the court much. Not much time leftover for Anthony Bennett either.

None of this should be a concern or should sway them away from going big here though.

Also if were playing fantasy scenarios how about this one. #4 pick and Calderon for DMC. Sign Lamarcus Aldridge and Jimmy Butler.

Galloway

Butler

Melo

Aldridge

DMC

Thats at least a 40 win team based on how everyone views Melo.

Not to mention that that kind of stuff is great for the league overall. Let's not pretend that we need some sense of formality for a bunch of guys who wear shorts and throw a ball around to each other.

I don't think they have the space. LMA and Butler are looking at max offers and NYK is only $35M under the projected cap - and that's not counting DMC's $14M

In a scenario where you can trade for Randle for the Greek Freak, LMA and Butler would take only $5 million a year.
