I got pulled over this weekend by the SCPD. For window tinting. On my 2000 Isuzu Trooper.



This truck has worn the window tinting in question since before I picked it up in '03. 150k+ miles ago! I've been pulled over multiple times in that span and not once did any issue with my tinting come up. The officer then ran me in the computer and came up with a suspended license for an unpaid "rolling stop" ticket. Now, I know this has to be due to a clerical problem I dealt with wherein the courts mistakenly added a digit to a ticket I had paid back in March. I supposedly "cleared this up" with a phone call when I received the notice back in June. "Disregard..." I was told. Their bad.

Right. So, the officer "had to" give me the tinting ticket because of the suspended license ticket, but let the "driving with a suspended license" (?bogus?) go because, well- he's a swell guy. The topper? My court date is 12/16- does that mean I drive around for two months with a suspended license just hoping I don't get pulled over... for tinting...again?

What a money grab, no? How was I supposed to know it wasn't legal? Apparently that doesn't even matter. You could drive out of a showroom with what the dealer applied and still not be in compliance. AND get the ticket.

How much is a typical tint ticket? Do the police give you a warning for removing that, or is it a warning/ticket combo?

I ask because I just put 15% on my car, knowing full-well that it's illegal. How does this work if I get pulled over?

No, he didn't. But after a little research I had a 24 hour window and no guarantee that the ticket would be thrown out. I have a pal- who was a cop for 20 tears and now does legal aide work- who I contacted this AM. He is going to work on this with me.

He thinks he can get it all thrown out thanks to the screw up with my suspension.

Holy crap! Mandatory court appearance for tint? Man New york is bat ### crazy. First it's Pepsi machines now it's standing before a judge for window tint. You know you'll be on the hook for "Court Costs" and surcharges, and judges lunch and half a dozen other fees in addition to the dopey ticket fines. I would hope you can avoid all of it if you can prove you already removed the tint and show you already paid the stop sign one. I'd bet he had your license ran and knew of the stop sign ticket before he pulled you over for your windows. They were just the excuse to pull you over and then find out about the ticket (that he already knew about).

Bottom line though, if you're going to take the gamble and drive with a suspended license until court I'd at least get the tint off. And get yourself 10 years worth of backdated FOP and PBA stickers to stick in the windows.

Well, the suspension is mandatory, so I'm guessing he just piggy backed the tinting ticket. As for tinting? I understand that tinting must allow 17% of the light. How he knew that for sure without using a meter? I don't know. My front passenger side window fell off the clips and had to be repaired. My shop can't find the right clips to make it stay, so it's currently off limits. And a chunk of the tinting got ripped off, so I'm guessing the tint is more obvious now.

Our Armada failed inspection because of tint on the front windows, so I took it off myself. I applied no heat - just windex and a razor blade. Roll the window down and you'll see the edge of the film at the top of the glass. Use the razor blade to pick at the edge until you can get your fingers pinched on it. Then pull it off. It will leave the glue residue behind, which is the messy part. Spray down with windex to soften the glue and then scrape off with the razor blade. Have a whole roll of paper towels with you so you can wipe away the glue as you scrape. Took me maybe 20 minutes to do the 2 windows.
