Tion Green, RB, DET (1 Viewer)

Copying this from the Dynasty Stashes thread ... with his first TD today against Baltimore (plus leading the Lions in rushing and producing with efficiency, Tion Green deserves his own thread.

Further down the depth chart, Detroit has carried a RB on their 53-man roster all year long despite never suiting up for a game.  His name is Tion Green, and some Detroit fans want to see him get a shot down the stretch.  The coaching staff fell in love with the UDFA after he impressed them all preseason with his work off the field and his physical play on the field.  Detroit's lack of red zone success is a well known trend, while Tion Green in the above article claims to have converted 32/32 opportunities at the goal line in college.  Green is ... well ... not a supreme athlete.  His top comparable is Rob Kelly, but like we saw with a strong passing game in Washington, maybe being physical and hard to tackle is enough to find success?  Green did explode for 150 total yards of offense in the preseason finale, leading Detroit in both rushing and receiving.  And for a team that likes to dress 3 RBs and carry 4 on the roster, he's lasted all year as the 5th guy, which suggests they not only see something they really like, but they're convinced they'd lose him somewhere else if he was on the practice squad.

Hands down the best RB on the team.  He should get the majority of early down and short yardage snaps.

I picked him up in redraft but I doubt he is  startable in any of the remaining games.  Maybe week 16 if he carves out a large role or if Abdulla remains out

I have never believed AA was the answer at RB and held Zenner all season for that reason. Looks like the Lions have no plans for Zenner so I took a flyer on Green, interested in watching him this week.

This is a very interesting thing to watch. AA has seemed to disappoint, again. He's also a FA after next season

Zenner is a FA after this season
Washington has 2 years left but he's at no risk for taking the starting job
Riddick is through 2019 but DET has a possible out after this season with only 1.9 mil in dead cap space, although I don't see Detroit cutting hium for the sake of cutting him

Green looks pretty good. Passes the first eye test. Could be something to watch for 2018. Likely taking Zenner's roster spot.

Nitpicking, but he doesn't have to take anyone's roster spot.  That's what perked my ears up in the first place ... they've carried him all year on the 53.  As their 5th RB, for a team the generally only activates 3 on game days.  And I don't think he's much on STs, though I could be wrong on that.

You're right. I guess I wasn't real clear in my thinking (often a problem for me). I think Detroit could let Zenner go and not think twice about it, likely not fill that with another RB

First carry of the game was a nice 33 yarder that I think caught the ravens off guard.  Next 10 carries were for 18 total yards.  I’m not expecting much from him, but if you have an open roster spot and desperately need rb points, why not?  Maybe a goal line td or two over the next few games.

I'm out.

Is this from looking at the game or the boxscore?  Because it sounds like out of his 11 carries, only 2 were any good.

He’s not a long term solution but I like him over anything else they have on the roster for the rest of this year. He could be a cuff to whomever the Lions draft (please) in 2018.

if Abdullah is out he’s a solid #3 RB option with #2 upside.

What's this eyeball test you guys think he passes?

If there is a hole there, he runs through it. If there's somebody waiting there, he lowers his pad level. He has shown a decent burst, which is interesting because lack of explosion was actually a knock coming out. He doesn't have anything more than an average top gear. He caught 13 and 29 passes his last two years of school against inferior talent and probably won't be used in the passing game or pass pro this year.

Fresh legs theory? Happens every year, some guy with no genuine talent gets a bunch of touches late in the season. Seems unlikely here but almost a guarantee it will happen somewhere in the league before Week 17.

I haven't seen Lions RB Tion Green today, but can't wait to watch. He can catch and he's nifty for his size.

Interesting RB prospect because his metrics are terrible. Green ran a 4.79 at his Pro Day no less (wasn't invited to the Combine). He doesn't make up for it in short area quickness, either (7.38 in the 3 cone & 4.58 in the 20 yard shuttle).

That said, I don't put a ton of weight into metrics. They're useful, but are only a small part of scouting, IMO. I'm not endorsing Green by any means. I'm simply saying I wouldn't kill him as a prospect because of metrics.

I'm not sure what to think of Green. I need to study him more. If nothing else, he could get an opportunity down the stretch & that's half the battle.

I actually wonder if he was hurt before or during his pro day.

Supposedly Green ran track in HS and was timed as fast as 10.9 in the 100M.

I saw that, but I haven't heard anything about Green being injured for his Pro Day.

You see that occasionally where once players get in college, they gain weight through weight training &/or growth & can longer run the way they did in high school.

I'm on the fence. I'd have to drop Richardson or Clement to get him.
Clement has the higher floor, but his fantasy ceiling is obviously limited - he's better than James White between the tackles, but the Eagles clearly don't view him as a feature back. Green could eventually become the feature back, but no one knows if he will. I did drop Clement in my 6 keeper/dyno league for him on the off chance Green does win the job and keeps it until next season, but if you can keep lots of guys Clement may be the better bet. And there's no way in hell I'd cut Richardson for him.

Personally I value opportunity pretty high. Not going to say I value it over talent but if this guy is JAG but gets the early down job then I'll go ahead and buy him for free and see what happens. From the very little I've seen so far I think he has pretty good footwork and vision. Eager to see more.

Per Ian Rapoport:

#Lions RB Ameer Abdullah (neck, questionable) is not expected to play today, source said, though it's more for play than injury reasons. Detroit is trying other players to improve the run game.

Green may or may not be a decent dynasty stash but how do you possibly bet your fantasy football playoffs by starting him?

Per Ian Rapoport:
Ameer Abdullah - RB -  Lions

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Ameer Abdullah (questionable, neck) is not expected to play Week 14 against the Buccaneers.

Per Rapoport, his absence is "more for play than injury reasons." In other words, Abdullah is going to be a healthy scratch. It's surprising to see the Lions go away from their No. 1 back this late in the year, though Abdullah certainly hasn't impressed this season. He ranks near the bottom of the league in yards per carry and has been a non-factor in fantasy aside from the occasional goal-line touchdown. Tion Green, who led the team with 51 rushing yards in his debut last week, figures to be the Lions' ball-carrier Sunday in Tampa. Pass-catcher Theo Riddick will see reps as well.

In short, injuries in a deep lineup, deep roster league. It’s either Green or the likes of Darkwa, Fuller, Aaron Jones, an injured Cooper, workload questionable Barber, etc. and unfortunately I find myself needing multiple players from that crew

This guy looked great last week, has fresh legs, a friendly matchup and weather is not a factor.

I am starting him over DeDe Westbrook at my flex in playoffs!
