Tips for Auction Dynasty Startup - First Timer! (1 Viewer)

I’m a long time dynasty player about to dip my toes in the auction pool.  Never done an auction startup before.

It’s a superflex league with 6 pt passing TDs and a slight ppr premium to TEs

Would appreciate any tips, tricks, words of wisdom from those of you experienced in auction startups.

Thanks in advance!

Don't be afraid to spend a little more on the guys you really want.  Have a plan to figure out those guys are and stick to it.

Been awhile for an auction. Throw out guys you don't like early, especially guys that look to go for a big number they will try to bid you up and then you dump on them. Let two owners get in a bidding war and burn up their cash. Bid up everyone to just below(10% below)  your number. I think I remember winning with vanilla teams but I had solid starters and depth at every position. It's hard to do. Don't let anyone go cheap early. Keep track of everyone's cash, and roster. You will be able to get a lot of guys late by bidding one dollar more.

Don't get caught in the emotion early, set your plan and stick too it.

It's fun.

Auctions are a zero sum game.  In your setup, the superflex and the TE premium will make QBs and TEs worth more than other leagues.  More $$$$ to QBs and TEs means less $$$$ to RBs and WRs.

View your dynasty league in 3 year windows.  A player like Mahomes is probably going to go for insane price since some owner will be like....."Elite production for next 10 years".  Don't fall into that trap.  The NFL stands for NOT FOR LONG.  So I would pass on Mahomes at his given price.

To compete now, you need to figure out 1) how to get a stud or two, 2) how to get cheaper producers that help you now but may be out the league soon (think Drew Brees at QB, or Julio will go for a cheaper price than a redraft auction), and 3) getting good young upside players.  You need a combination of all 3, you just have to figure out what the best combination given your budget.  While RBs don't have long shelf lives, getting a stud RB for 3 years is much better than getting a decent WR2 for 7 years.

Good luck.  Auctions Rule.

Well, we are about 90% done with the auction and here's where I'm at for a roster

QB - Lock, Darnold, Love, Eason, Hurts

RB - Fournette, David Johnson, Singeltary, Chase Edmonds, Eno Benjamin,. DeeJay Dallas

WR - Sutton, Metcalf, McLaurin, Brandin Cooks, Tee Higgins, Michael Pittman, Gandy-Golden

TE - Waller, Sternberger, Kmet, Warring

Keeping in mind it's a 14 team league, QB prices were crazy high.  Lock and Darnold were actually two of the cheaper starters and Mahomes and Lamar went for double their price.  And rookie fever was in full effect.  Granted, I got a few rookies but only because the price was right on these guys.....for example, Zach Moss went for the same price as Michael Pittman and guys like Cam Akers went for more than Michael Thomas!

I definitely learned a lot....and I get it now why guys like auctions so much.  I'd do it again for sure.

I think this team will struggle out of the gate.  You don't have a difference maker (first rounder talent).   Lot's of question marks with hope they will continue to progress.  I think you will have to do a lot of moving and shaking to stay competitive.

My guess is you decided to go younger because you don't really have much in the way of proven veterans.  DJ is about the only one I see.  It's not bad but you need most of your young dart throws to hit to succeed.  This looks more like a team playing for 2 years from now than this year.  That is not my preferred roster build.  Hopefully it works and you got the right rookies.....it's just a really hard thing to do.
