Titans 2018 (1 Viewer)

So a guy I absolutely adore was signed- Marc Mariani

This DOES solidify the return game, absolutely. It is like the tenth person Whis cut that Mularkey brought back but....

Being ineffective in the return game and doing well in the return game were reasons to supposedly keep and cut players-this was a discussion that really picked up steam the past couple weeks. Guess what? It didn't matter. Mariani is here. Soooooooooooo did they keep the right guys then? I am understanding that this isn't on Mularkey and time and availability controlled this but I'm still curious if they kept the right guys.

Remember Ben Roberts? I wrote of him a number of times.

HE, not Hunter, TZ, DGB, or McBride, is still with the team on the practice squad. How about them apples?

They have one PS spot available.

They cut Abdesmad to sign Amaro and McBride to sign Mariani. I would guess one of them is added. Really they should keep both and cut someone. I mean they were each on the 53 initially.

McBride won't be avialable for long.

But I thought of bringing Mariani back the moment I saw he was cut. So there's a move I like

For sure they will put Abdesmad or McBride on the PS if they can, but I doubt McBride would stay there long

Chase Coffman made the Colts 53 and then was released (kind of like McBride)

I'd rather him than Amaro

For those that don't remember him....

At the time Wes Welker was a thing and people compared NFL prospects to him.  Marc Mariani was the first one that I even thought remotely close to Welker. I'm old enough to have seen Welker return kicks and punts and...that's his twin there if ya ask me.

Welker was a tactician with his cuts on his routes and understanding just where to be against a zone. Mariani is just a speedy lil white guy as a wide receiver. He doesn't have that blessed knowledge to dissect a D and...he's just not Wes. As a rookie, Mariani actually did play WR in the pro bowl. The KRs got in for some passes and that was nice, but he never made a pro bowl as a WR. He's just...welker on returns. He's too upright and going to get concussion, he's always hustling and I just really for once liked the Welker comparison.

It's really surprising to see hunter and DGB off the team.  Seems like a lot of talent to lose.  But maybe these moves indicate a philosophy that hard work is valued more than raw talent.  It should be an interesting season for us Titans fans.

The QB turmoil in MIN makes the first game a much less daunting task than I thought it would be. They still have a solid defense, but the likely starter is Shaun Hill, if not it'll be Bradford on a limited playbook. I expect a lot of AP. Can the Titans D stop him?

 AD is going to have a big day. Mckinnon might too.

I don't mind him having a 200+ yard day as long as they get mostly FGs out of it

And every time the QB steps back to pass he is hit, hurried or sacked. Who ever he may be.

Wright is out this week. Ran hard, didn't go well.

I don't think it matters since at the moment there is no pecking order. He was supposed to be dynamic and...guess it's just Douglas in slot and maybe Sharpe in slot with Andre outside.

No way Wright is in football shap eright now, he hasn't been part of team practice for a month or so.

If he were Jerry Rice, I'd say, fine, but I'm expecting a bit of rust.

Going to the game Sunday. Section 117

It's going to be way better than my first game last year vs. Texans. They might actually try to win.

Shaun Hill expects to start. Mularkey says "doesn't matter"

Good for him.

It's really unbelievable. Can you imagine he's a rook on the Vikes, cut and out of football year two, then he's starting day one ten years later?

I would have never expected he'd have a 10 year career

Pretty wild, that. I wonder if they would have let him start if the game was at home, though.

Sunday is so far after Thursday. I'm not sure I liked that PanthersBroncos tease anymore

I hope Antwaun Woods gets talked about the whole game.
Has he been activated from the practice squad?

Norv Turner said good things about their defense and Mike Zimmer did as well. I don't know much about any of the Titans current defensive players besides Orakpo and McCourtey who are good players.

This game may be one of the quickest to be over on Sunday if both teams can run well.

Yeah I mean after seeing the CarDen game it feels like forever to get to watch the Titans

Nope and that's what I'm referring to. Best NT this summer will not be there to stop ADP

Huh. So what do you think of the starting NT Al Woods then?
He started in 2014 and 2015 and teams ran up the middle with ease and each draft they say NT is one of the positions they need to address. He was not re-signed, neither was Sam HIll, because he wasn't good enough. Then they changed their mind and re-signed him after free agency started.
The 2nd rounder, Austin Johnson, ran great after RBs that went wide. I loved seeing a big guy run that fast and even at the sideline. He doesn't win the battle when runs are right up the middle though. Angelo Blackson (last year's NT pick) is fast too and plays DE, third at NT.

Antwaun is just a classic NT type. He is not going to lose a battle or if he does, he'll die trying. There's articles and quotes on him from the summer. You name a Titans writer or coach and they're saying good things.

They were hesitant and there was no reason for Al to be re-signed. Antwaun can play 1st and 2nd and 3rd or any long down can go to the athletic ones. If Blackson is athletic enough to catch a TD as a TE and Austin athletic enough to chase RBs to the sideline, then let em' play with Jurrell Casey. He knows all about being a big athletic DL. They'll learn. But there's nothing fancy about a NT on an obvious rushing down. He's gotta get his hands dirty and mix it up for a few seconds to hold up traffic.

That's the other thing. With excellent athletes/rushers at OLB and DE, if he can stand the interior line up for a few seconds, then those outside guys can "do their thing." When Al gets pushed around, we get to say "wow Casey IS fast" and "look at Orakpo run." I don't want to know they're fast on a mano Y mano plays like running up the gut. I want brutes fighting the OL so the RB has nowhere to go.

Twice Antwaun got near the QB and he got there by pushing his guy backwards. He doesn't have the moves and speed, clearly. The Titans are trying to put a superb athlete at a position that doesn't warrant it at all.

Lebeau will most definitely go with his 5-3 if the Vikings show their hand as being (almost) a non passing O. I am confident this will work, but the Vikes just have to pass a little to keep them in the 3-4.

The best defense against ADP is going to be to have Mariota try and score points in a hurry. ADP hasn't played all preseason. He's a fantastic trainer and I'm sure he's in tip-top shape, but...test him. Force them to pass and see if they can really keep giving it to him and keep up with the Titans scoring. The scoreboard is the best way to minimize ADP

Those two defensive scores by Minnesota were very unlucky and will not happen much going forward.   I still think Tennessee will surprise some people this year.
It was more than that. The offense is unimaginative and there are miscues that should have been ironed out in TC. They scored zero points for almost three quarters, first and third/fourth IIRC

I think Minnesota is a better team than some are letting on. We discussed a bunch but ya know....Shaun Hill did pretty well. I wouldn't bench him for Bradford. I saw a stat that he completed more passes of ten yards plus than Bridgewater over a lengthy amount of time.

Fumbles stink, there's no sugar coating it. Interceptions are similarly bad. They were winning.

My problem with "the world" Is always how winners find ways to win and losers find ways to lose. This totally happened yesterday. Time and time again it rings true and it's annoying.

Some post game thoughts-

Conklin was very good. I'm thoroughly impressed.

Harry Douglas had a bunch more snaps than Matthews. Ummm why?

The FB that they're looking forward to using got 12 snaps....dejavu

Hate the 3 TE set that was supposed to be done with.

Steve Young was my favorite roll out often type QB.If they're doing that, then bring him in. He does coach QBs on the side.

Mularkey didn't look hopeful about Derrick or Wright this coming week. He said something like we'll see how the week goes. Guess who Morgan's replacement is? DODD, not Bass who played well last year and well yesterday.

Casey will get less snaps to remain fresh-because they can win without their best players? He's in year six, stop talking about him like he's Andre.

I didn't see Antwan Blake either time. I didn't notice any snaps on the snap count either. He was not inactive. PFR has zero snaps for him but they don't include ST like PFF premium does. I didn't want him on the roster after preseason so I felt like Mularkey/Lebeau admitted they weren't going to use him. I saw Cody Riggs was re-signed and was excited. Then I saw they cut Tanney. Really? Geesh

PFR only lists Douglas with two more snaps.

So Titans opening day backfield was Murray, Henry, and Fowler. That was the first play...just an FYI. I'd rather whatever they do out of this set than 3 TEs

Too many people over-analyzing Mularkey going for two late. They were losing...relax. They were not going to win. Of all the issues yesterday that cost them the game, that wasn't one of them

The Giants just signed Josh Johnson. Aaron Murray was cut today too. I would prefer Murray or Tanney over Johnson.

Big free agent signee Sean Smith was benched at halftime after a rough preseason.

Inquire, inquire, inquire puhlease. Now, while the Raiders appear to have signed a bum. He's a player. I don't care what's wrong, Lebeau will fix it.

As a Raider fan, i Was glad to see coach bench a player not performing, no matter the salary. Maybe smith isn't the guy we hoped he was. His comtract is front loaded and we'll find a new one. I like the message it sends to the team. Like you guys and Sharpe. Matthews i don't understand with you guys. I think he's a player.

Yeah that was good of the coach. (In this scenario) For the Titans he would either be considered a star as a good corner or blend right in with McCourty and McCain

To repeat something from earlier and ask a Q- Can a "supreme athlete" play OLB in the NFL with no experience?

Kevin Dodd didn't play HS football. He started one year in college at DE. He has 2-3 padded practices under his belt and 13 snaps. That's as close to never playing OLB as we'll probably ever get.

What do you think?

5-3 OLB seems like it'd be easier than when they are in 3-4

Austin Johnson will switch to end from NT.

It's not often that a team will spend a 2nd and a 4th on nose tackles and have them both play end.

He subbed for Casey last week and did well and now he will almost literally be like Blackson II.

There was no mention of cutting a DE and signing Antwaun Woods. I don't think it's imminent. Now Al Woods can be backed up by Blackson, Johnson, Casey, and Klug in a pinch.

My issue is still that none of them are very good at NT. Not even the wonderful Casey. They CAN play NT, but doing it well matters most.

If they were going to tie the game they needed to convert at least one 2 pointer to do it. It makes sense to try to go for it on the first opportunity instead of leaving it until the end.

I got a text from an awesome source that Kendall Wright has contacted the NFLPA.

No idea what's going on.

Something is up

He was declared out today. Whether that was before or after he potentially contacted NFLPA we'll probably never know

I wish I knew more

All I have is my own "umm you were cleared weeks ago, why aren't you playing" thought.

If he were "milking" an injury, he'd totally be back to face a D that allowed a ton of passing last week so I don't think it's that.
