Titans expected to release Henry (1 Viewer)

The Titans "appear likely" to release Travis Henry after being unable to agree on a restructured contract, according to the Nashville Tennessean and NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

Henry is due an $8.3 million roster bonus on Monday and the sides have reportedly made no progress on a new deal. Titans GM Mike Reinfeldt says he's "optimistic" a deal will be reached after Henry enters a crowded running back market. For now, Lendale White has the position to himself. Mar. 2 - 7:37 pm et

Titans likely to cut Henry Saturday

By PAUL KUHARSKY

Staff Writer

The Titans appear likely to wind up in position to cut running back Travis Henry Saturday in order to avoid an $8.3 million roster bonus that’s due Monday.

Indications are talks between General Manager Mike Reinfeldt and agent Hadley Engelhard have not progressed enough for the team to sidestep the bonus.

The contract, not Henry’s play or production, is the issue.

While Reinfeldt said he remains optimistic as long as the two sides are talking, he allowed for the possibility that an exploration of free agency by Henry might be good for both sides.

“I still would be optimistic that he would return,” Reinfeldt said. “Sometimes you need to look at the market and see what all is out there. I’m not sure that’s a terrible thing…”

“It’s one thing to sit back and say ‘If I were a free agent, people would offer me this.’ It’s a different thing when they actually become a free agent and find out what people are willing to offer them. Sometimes that’s not a bad thing.”

Engelhard could not be reached for comment.

Henry emerged as the starter early last season and keyed what wound up to be the NFL’s fifth-ranked rushing attack with 1,211 rushing yards, seven touchdowns and six 100-yard games.

If the Titans cut Henry and he lands elsewhere, they’ll be left with LenDale White as their feature back unless they sign another free agent or address the position again in the draft.

Chris Brown became a free agent today and reportedly has a long list of suitors. It’s doubtful he would re-emerge as an option for the Titans after falling out of favor last season.

Cecil Lammey is searching for his jersey right about now...

This just in, the Broncos just signed Henry, McGahee, Thomas Jones, Jamal Lewis, and Ahman Green. Film at 11. So now we can quit saying every available RB is going to Denver.

BREAKING: The Titans just bailed Rae Carruth out of the pen. He'll be converting to RB.

I don't do the dancing pickle often, but as a LenDale White owner, what the heck...
Seriously what are the chances White becomes a starter? I don't see the Titans paying top dollar for a good FA RB. Of course Henry could be signed again but outside of that I don't see the Titans going after a "starter"

I think there's a decent shot White gets a chance to start. This assumes that he's taking the offseason seriously and that Norm Chow has faith in him because of their past history together at USC. I can't tell what the chances are, but I will say this, the future looks a heck of a lot better for White with Henry and Brown out of the picture.

Amen brother! Hey AJ Smith, in case you didn't realize it, more than half the posts on this entire site are filled with worthless information. That's the stuff we call joking around and having a good time. If you want 100% facts, buy a stat book and grab some coffee!

Titans cut Henry, who will visit Denver

By PAUL KUHARSKY

Staff Writer

The Titans cut running back Travis Henry today, steering clear of an $8.3 million roster bonus that was due on Monday.

The team hopes that once Henry and his agent, Hadley Engelhard, size up the free agent market they’ll return to negotiate and they’ll find what the Titans are offering is more reasonable than they thought.

Henry is on his way to Denver to meet with the Broncos tonight and tomorrow.

He joins a free agent pool of running backs that includes Green Bay’s Ahman Green, Indianapolis’ Dominic Rhodes, Washington’s T.J. Duckett and the player Henry ultimately beat out to become the Titans’ starter in 2006, Chris Brown.

Six other backs are considered to be worthy of first- or second-round draft picks in late April: Oklahoma’s Adrian Peterson, Cal’s Marshawn Lynch, Louisville’s Michael Bush, Auburn’s Kenny Irons, Penn State’s Tony Hunt and Ohio State’s Antonio Pittman.

Currently the Titans have only one running back on their roster. LenDale White is coming off an unimpressive first season but the Titans expect a big jump.

Another draft pick from last season, seventh-rounder Quinton Ganther, played in two games in 2006 but spent the bulk of the season on the practice squad.

In 13 starts and 14 games, Henry took 270 carries 1,211 yards for the 2006 Titans with seven touchdowns. His 4.5-yards per carry average was the second best for the franchise’s lead back since the 1993 season.

In other free agent developments today:

--Defensive tackle Rien Long’s deal with the Titans is for one year and will line him up for another shot at unrestricted free agency in 2008. It is believed to be worth the fifth-year minimum of $595,000.

--Harold Lewis, who represents defensive lineman Kevin Carter, said his client could visit with Coach Jeff Fisher early next week to discuss a return. The Titans have not inquired about another Lewis client, linebacker Ed Hartwell.

--The agent for receiver Brandon Stokley, just released by Indianapolis, said the Titans are not a team that will be involved in courting him

Colin, Do you think if Lynch is setting there, will they look at him?
Depends on who else is available. If he's there and the top 2 DEs (Anderson, Adams), top 2 WRs (Ginn, Meachem), top 2 CB (Hall, Houston), and top two safeties (Nelson, Landry) are gone, then they may be tempted. At that point, however, I wouldn't be the least bit shocked to see them start trading down to acquire multiple picks in the 2nd and 3rd to grab some DEs and DBs from the 1b tier.

This I agree with

Huge news for LenDale. I expect the team to bring in a mid-level free agent or a 3rd-4th round pick type in the NFL draft, but he has the inside track at the starting job. If Vince Young is as good as he looked last year then LenDale could be top 10-15 as early as next season.

As a White owner I would love this, but do we really expect the Titans to place their hopes in his hands? I haven't heard any kind of confidence coming out of Tenessee that would assert that White has proven that he can be their man, which would have made sense for them to do if they were trying to get Henry to take a pay cut. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if the Titans quietly sign a FA back to start until (or if) White proves himself.

Why run the guy out? He's fun to read...its a long off season, we need good schtick in the Shark Pool...no wonder the FFA is always dogging this side of the pond.

Travis Henry-RB- Titans Mar. 4 - 10:06 am et

Green Bay, Houston, and Oakland have contacted Travis Henry's agent.

The Packers are expected to wait and see what happens with Ahman Green before making a push to sign Henry. It currently appears highly likely that Henry will be a Bronco in 2007, although things can obviously change.

Source: Green Bay Press-Gazette

Unless Denver follows through with a starting job promise (which still doesn't mean much from Skeletor), Henry would be a fool not to re-sign with Tennessee as long as the offer is competitive. He's not the kind of back that can be the #1 option on an offense and expect to produce; he lacks the field vision. But he is a decisive runner, and with the whole world focusing on VY, Henry's able to take advantage of the breathing room.

TEN proved they could help Henry and vice versa. He should remember why he left Buffalo -- as well as the fact that Lendale has yet to show he "gets it" in any way at the pro level. Travis's coveted 20+ carries are in Nashville.

I couldn't disagree more. Henry would be gold in Denver as long as Shanahan restrains himself.

This seems to be the key point of the article, but people are ignoring it. I'd love to say that White will be the starter, but the Titans aren't saying that yet. They're saying that they're willing to play chicken with Henry and let him test the free agent waters instead of paying him $8.3 million + his salary this year. I agree with that. If Henry does sign somewhere else, I'd expect the Titans to bring in another back - and it almost certainly won't be Brown. If he doesn't get an offer he likes, he'll probably be back and starting/splitting duties with LenDale in 2007. Now would be a terrible time to try to acquire either player, because both are going to be at an all time high of trade value. Henry owners will want to wait to see if he signs in Denver, and White owners are hoping they have a new starter on an improving offense. So for now, we're just watching the NFL soap opera unfold. It's an interesting situation to keep an eye on, but nothing more.

Not true, now is the time to trade for players like Henry and White. You snooze you lose. Yes, it could backfire, but that's how leagues are won, by those who take some chances. All waiting does is make them too expensive if Henry goes to Denver. I guarantee you he's cheaper now than he would be then. Those who play too conservative in this hobby might make the playoffs, but seldom build great teams.

 Doubt about a player's status tends to reduce their value, all other things being equal.

 The $8.3 was the main reason Tenn let Henry walk, not confidence in White. Look for Tenn to sign a FA RB to start with White still learning the ropes. His rookie season was a waste, so this will be, in effect, his first year. Understudy-time.

Sorry for not being clearer -- I opened with the note about Denver because I meant that, along with Tennessee, a promised starting spot in Denver would be excellent. For ANY back. But the Oakland and GB situations are a different beast, and Henry isn't the guy who could lift them "to the next level" or anything of the kind. He is better off in DEN or TEN. My one concern for Henry about DEN is Shanny's fickleness. If I were him, TEN is the only one I would trust to give me 20+ carries from the start of the year to the end of it.

I disagree that WHite's rookie season was a waste. He got much better in pass protection as the season wore on and his ability to gain yards after contact, IMO, were on display plenty.

Who could they sign that would start over him? The only available backs who are arguably better are Thomas Jones, Michael Turner, and Jamal Lewis. Lewis would seem like a suspect signing given his age and the fact that White is a comparable player. Turner and Jones would likely be too expensive. My guess is that they'll draft someone like Brandon Jackson or Darius Walker in the 4th round, but that White will be the opening day starter. As I've said before, I think he's better than all of the backs in this draft except Lynch and Peterson.
