TO vs. Moss by Champ Bailey

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver's Champ Bailey, the best cornerback in the NFL, regards Randy Moss and Terrell Owens as two of the top six wide receivers he has covered -- a group that includes Steve Smith, Chad Johnson, Marvin Harrison and Andre Johnson. We asked Bailey to break down Moss and Owens.

SPEED/QUICKNESS

Moss: "He really doesn't run fast until he has to. That's what's scary."

Owens: "When he gets the ball, that's when you really see his speed and quickness."

Edge: Owens

ROUTE RUNNING

Moss: "He has a great feel for the game, and I think he understands defenses better than anybody."

Owens: "He's explosive out of his cuts. He doesn't slow down. Everything is full speed."

Edge: Moss

CATCHING THE BALL

Moss: "His hands are great. He can adjust his body and move in space. And when he's in the air, it's amazing."

Owens: "You can't make some of the catches he makes without good hands."

Edge: Moss

RUNNING AFTER THE CATCH

Moss: "When he has room, he can definitely make you miss. He has a nice stiff-arm, too."

Owens: "He's like a running back when he has the ball. He's a guy you really don't want to have to tackle in the open field."

Edge: Owens

BREAKING PRESS COVERAGE

Moss: "He can definitely get off the jam. When you're up on him, you can't see the ball; you can't see anything."

Owens: "He just uses straight power. He takes one step and, boom, he's gone."

Edge: Even

BLOCKING

Moss: "He definitely hasn't been known to block very well, but he can do it when he wants to."

Owens: "He's strong. When it comes to blocking, he's like a tight end."

Edge: Owens

Thanks for sharing........after each breakdown I guessed at what he would say and I was correct in all except on the one where he picked even.

I thought Moss maybe has a slight edge there but according to him, he feels it's the same.

I thought Owens dropped more than his share of passes. This description doesn't talk about that. Am I wrong?

T.O. burned Bailey for 90+ on one play a couple of years ago.
Yeah that was just a quick hitch and he broke his ankles. I haven't really seen Moss break any tackles or put a move on anyone in a while, so I'm not really enamored with his after-catch production. Then again, TO has questionable hands.

Moss is deceptive and Owens is brute force. They're really two completely different types of receivers with some similar off the field and on the field issues.

You have to realize that a few players are going to speak their mind and tell you how they really feel. Instead, most will compliment someone and avoid telling you how the really feel since they (and especially their coaches) don't want controversy because they blasted another player. In other words, am sure Champ would have love to say; "TO has the worst hands in the league" but he can't because the press would eat it up and make it a huge story.

I think the biggest difference between them - both are all-time greats - is that, at least today, T.O. can be the only receiving option on a team (see: Philly) while Moss cannot (see: Oakland)

Moss has WAY better hands, T.O. is the more complete receiver.

Champ Bailey is a smart guy though. He could wordsmith a response to where it doesn't sound too inflammatory.

TO wasn't the only receiving option on that team. You can throw Moss' time in Oakland straight out the window. They both require good/great QB play and whine and revolt when they don't get it. When they get it they both are unstoppable.

I forgot about the great Freddie Mitchell and that warrior Todd Pinkston.

Looks like you also forgot about the great D'Wayne Bates...

Bailey was playing on one hamstring. Not saying that Bailey's the fastest player in the league, but there's no way TO outruns a non-gimpy Bailey. T.O.'s not known for his speed.

One of the worst comparisons I've seen. Put Moss on that Super Bowl Philly team, and he puts up great numbers. Put TO on that 2-14 Oakland team, and his suicide attempt is a success . . .

I have to disagree. T.O. has never really had a bad QB. The worst one was Bledsoe for year, and he had Terry Glenn and Witten as other receiving threats. You put T.O. on that pathetic Raiders team, and I guarantee he not only disappears, but he throws a couple dozen temper tantrums and gets kicked off the team. Moss just gave up in frustration.

Moss is not a west coast receiver at all. IMO.I agree at second look though..not a good comaprison after all...the Raiders were SO bad.

On that play , bum hamstring or not , Champ was not catching Owens.TO has a 2nd gear (ask D'Angelo Hall) and is not slow enough for him to get run down from behind by when Baily is sadly out of position.

How so?Everyone is so funny with their "coaching" hats and names for things. Moss can play in any system as long as the coach isn't an idiot. Some coaches try to shove round pegs in square holes (Childress, Martz) and some don't (Belichik).

 watch the replay. Champ pulls up holding his hammy before TO finishes the juke. otherwise he would have caught him.

Interesting that i've seen this a few times now where corners are asked about tough matchups and AJ's name is always mentioned.Too bad he had one of the worst QB's in the league throwing to him for the past few years. Right when he got a good QB he started tearing it up and then got hurt.

You can't argue with a Bronco's fan about Bailey, from all the Bronco's fans that post on these boards I have come to realize: Champ Bailey, can fly, literally, he has never been beaten, he can catch faster or equally as fast guys from the back, obviously they didn't make the catch while he was covering them (just like Dallas Clark didn't run past him a couple weeks back for a TD), he has only given up 1 -2 catches his entire career and that is only because of some sort of leg ailment, otherwise he would still have a flawless record. No doubt Champ is a great player, some of the crap that gets thrown around on this board is a joke though.

Champ Bailey once had his own hands tied behind his back and beat Chuck Norris in hand-to-hand combat

after that..

Champ Bailey beat Shaq 1-on-1 in basketball

and then...

Champ Bailey beat a grizzly bear in a hot dog eating contest

and then...

Champ Bailey impregnated every woman over the age of 18 in Denver, in one afternoon.

Actually... last one was Travis Henry, my bad.

I think Owens runs better routes than Moss.
