Tony G will void contract after this year (1 Viewer)

try to transcribe-

I hear, from you, there's a chance Tony G might not be a Chief next season?

Jay-Well how bout this? Tony told me this week that he actually will void his contract after this year and he is now schedule to become a UFA. Perhaps a surprise addition to that FA list. Now I talked to Tony and he said "he would love to finish his career as a Chief but I'm also realistic but I understand what happens inside the NFL. We've had contract negotiations before, we've had contract talks even talked to them recently but there's a real possibility I won't be a Chief next year."

So if he voids his contract, he'll have to give back all the money that he earned under that contract?
It depends.Often times a player is able to void a contract after year X and it's all spelled out in the contract. How much he gives back(if anything) etc. I'm not sure what NFLPA rule is but figure they have some rule so every player doesn't just void their contract and become a FA

6. What are voidable years and how do they affect the proration of a signing bonus?

Many contracts these days in the NFL included clauses for "voided years". These are typically incentive laden additions to contracts that will allow the player to file for Free Agency sooner if certain goals are obtained. Voidable years can be included when determining the term of years for signing bonus pro-ration. However, if the player meets the goal that voids the year or years of the contract, any amount of the signing bonus that was allocated to the voided year or years will be accelerated and added immediately to team salary. If the accelerated signing bonus puts the team over the Salary Cap, the amount that the team is over the cap will be deducted from the team’s Salary Cap for the next year. If a player can void a contract based on a “likely to be earned incentive,” and the player is on the roster at a later time, there will be no acceleration. If a contract is renegotiated to reduce the number of years of the contract, the portion of the signing bonus that has not been allocated is included in team salary at the time of the renegotiation.

He is just posturing....Priest did the same thing and he got his $$$$

Not to mention Roaf's contract and his high salary comes off teh books this offseason

Maybe he decided to void two weeks ago, and that's why he keeps going over 100 now- he's now in a contract year.

Maybe. The way he played the last 2 weeks, I'd give him the world if I were Peterson. The way he played the first few weeks, I'd put Wilson in and figure his best days are behind him.I think it will be interesting now knowing that how he performs=money.Career stats or not, NFL players are on a what have you done for me lately pay scale and if the player voids his contract.....if he struggles, Peterson could spin it if need be.

this on NFL.com's fantasy section now

FOXSports.com reports that Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez says the final years of his current deal with the Chiefs have voided and that he can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He wants to return to the Chiefs but realizes that he could wind up elsewhere if the two sides cannot come to terms. "I would love to end my career here but I'm a realist and know there is a real possibility I could end up hitting the open market," said Gonzalez. "We've had some talks, we both gave proposals recently but we're pretty far apart. At this point I've told my agent I don't really want it to be a distraction during the season."

Analysis: Gonzalez now has added motivation to play well for the rest of the season. Chances are you aren't thinking about benching him anyway, but this should cement him on your roster for the rest of the year. Gonzalez caught six passes for 116 yards vs. Seattle in Week 8 and remains a top-end Fantasy TE. Definitely use him at St. Louis in Week 9.

Something tells me that no matter where he ends up (even back in KC), his fantasy value will be enhanced. Any team that gives him that last payday will heavily use him.

GREEN BAY!!! GREEN BAY!!! GREEN BAY!!!
Exactly what I was thinking. Franks is about done, David Martin is a never was. He'd be an awesome addition, and Green Bay has some cash to spend. IF it were to happen, and that's a BIG IF, I could easily see Favre coming back. Driver, Jennings and Tony! A Packer fan can dream.
