Tony LaRussa Retiring (1 Viewer)

And so begins the speculation that he knows they don't plan to bring back Albert.

Early money on Oquendo taking over. They'll go cheap, most likely.

I'm intrigued by Oquendo, probably the best in-house option. He probably leaves Mac at hitting coach, which seems to be a really good fit.Don't sell the position short though, there will be plenty of outside interest. (Assuming there is some sort of money attached to the position)

I don't sell the position short. I sell their willingness to attach the money short. I think they'll go cheap.
So are you of the belief that they're letting Pujols walk? Filling this position might be the most important thing they can do to persuade him beyond the dollars and cents. If they go cheap, I hope it is someone he loves.

Player/Manager Albert Pujols a possibility? He is already calling his own hit and runs. Shorter walk out to the mound to call for the reliever.

I wouldn't call it a belief, but I'd say this makes it more of a possibility. Ultimately, it's the offers from other teams that are going to determine if Pujols stays or goes. If someone offers huge money, I think they're unlikely to match it. If the best he can get is close to what they're willing to pay, they might slide up the scale a bit. I won't be shocked to see him go, though. Looking at the moves they've made and the makeup of the team, they don't scream to me, "We're bringing Albert back". I know the company line is that they've made moves to try to persuade him to stay, but what's the more likely scenario - that the Berkman resigning helps convince Albert to stay or that he's an insurance policy to lessen the sting should Albert leave? Right now they're looking at Craig as the 4th OFer again. Does that seem like the way to build up a young player coming off the contributions he just made? The natural move right now is to slide Berkman to first and put Craig into Berkman's outfield spot every day.

Congrats to LaRussa, one of the best managers in my lifetime (if not the best).

3-3 in WS i believe?

1-2 in Oak (got Gibson'd by LA and somehow lost to Cinci in 90, Beat SF in the Earthquake series)

2-1 in Stl (lost to the Red Sox then won 2 more).

Sparky & Tony the only mamagers to win at least one in both leagues?

The buddy system explains the hiring of Matheny. He has no coaching or managerial experience from what I heard, but he is buddies with GM Mozeliak.

Matheny is a smart dude. I don't mind the hire.

I AM happy they didn't go with Rain Man Francona. He's just a mental breakdown waiting to happen. Let him implode on the Cubs.

I think hiring Matheny is a mistake. He's never managed anywhere. Its going to take him 1-2 years to figure out how to manage. Why take that learning curve on the MLB level?

Ozzie Guillen never managed and he won a W.S. in his 2nd season. :shrug:Look up the track records of managers with no managing experience. It's not as bad as you think.
