Tony Romo - A tale of two seasons (1 Viewer)

I know Romo is a hot topic today for obvious reasons but I've been thinking about his situation for the past couple weeks and wondered what the rest of the board thought. Romo was clearly the darling of Dallas that saved their season, no doubt about it. He started out tremendously, avoiding the blitz with great rollouts/scrambles in the pocket, throwing the ball all over the place. He was uber-confident playing for one of the most popular franchises and it was a great media story. He looked to be the cornerstone QB of Dallas for years to come.

His coming out party was definitely the TB game on Thxgiving but since then his season went pretty much downhill. Over his 1st 6 games he averaged a 69% completion rate, 270 ypg, 2 td's and .83 ints/game over the last 6 games his completion % dropped by 9 pts to 60, yards to 239, td's to 1.17/gm (.8 drop/gm) and int's/game rose to 1.33 (.5 more/game).

Did the league figure him out? Was it the better competition over the last 6 games? Combo of both? My opinion is that defensive coordinators saw that most of the big plays came from his rollouts/scrambles and tried to keep him in the pocket and he wasn't able to adjust his game effectively.

Which is the real Romo? and how will he project next year?

I think it's not only did defenses figure him out, but his head got too big. He blew up really fast and that seems to always be a recipe for disaster. You hear about him dating Jessica Simpson and other hot celebrity chicks inquiring about him. He had a camera in his grill constantly almost immediately after he took Bledsoe's spot.I think he got a little to full of himself and got that "Superman" syndrome where he thought he was better than every one else and he forgot about the small things...the things that got him to where he is at now.Hopefully next year after everything settles he'll go back to being the savior of the Cowboys and play great football. I certainly think he's a player and can be in the game for years to come.

once teams got game film on him and figured out his likes/dislikes and tendencies they were better able to key in on him and slow him down.

people jumped on the Romo-wagon waaaaaaaaaaaaay too quickly. all this talk of him being a top 3-5 QB in the NFL after a couple weeks... yikes.

I think his un-doing was over-confidence that caused him to take too many chances with the ball. If Parcells stays, I am sure he'll teach the kid that it's better to just take the sack or throw the ball away then to wave it around trying to make a play. People swung on his jock for his "Brett Favre" like ability to make a play out of nothing, but that came back to get him.

He got cocky and started thinking he was better than he is. He could be good but the pressure on his brain when he put on the helmut over the past month really caused him to hemmorage. Did they increase his helmut size to handle his inflated head? Better look into that.

What are the odds Romo is the NFC holder in the Pro Bowl? Who else on the roster will have experience as a holder?

Unless this game wrecks him mentally, he will still be a great QB. This guy came off the bench and threw for 19 TDs, 13 ints, 2900 yards and had a completion percentage of 65% and a QB rating of 95 in 10 games. His first NFL starts ever. That is damn good.

People get sick of the Favre comparisons, but in his first full year as a starter he threw the same amount of TDs, 400 more yards, 11 more ints, a completion percentage of 60 and a QB rating of 72 in six more games and he went to the Pro Bowl. If there was a FBG message board back then, would of he got an :lmao: for going?

I don't get the Romo hate. The kid is a good QB. Not sure why it's his fault he got named to the Pro Bowl. So what if he's cocky, that seemed to work out o.k. for Favre. The backlash on this guy is really strange compared to other QBs. Did everybody hate on Joe Namath because he dug hot chicks and was cocky? And, yes he did that before he did anything of importance in the NFL. A HOF like Namath didn't even have a completion % of over 53 his entire career and only threw more that 19 TDs once in 13 seasons.

This is a microwave world if people bury this guy after 10 games. Maybe Romo won't ever be a HOF or win a Super Bowl, but I don't get shoveling dirt on him after 10 games into his career. 10 pretty damn good games. Hopefully he won't be defined for a bad hold, because he actually is a good QB who has potential to be a great one.

Allow me to point out that his last 6 games project to 3824 passing yards, 19 passing TDs, and 21 interceptions. His first 6 project to 4320 passing yards, 32 passing TDs, and 13 interceptions. As is usually the case with questions like this, the answer probably lies in the middle somewhere. Suppose we take the average... that's 4072 passing yards, 25 passing TDs, and 17 interceptions. If he puts up numbers like that next season, he'll be in the Pro Bowl again. That said, I think projecting him for next season will depend a lot on what kind of turnover happens (Parcells, Owens, etc.).

I've been thinking for a while that when a QB takes his first start mid-season, it can take a couple of games for opposing Ds to catch up to him. This season, several QBs took over for starters after not having much exposure pre-season--meaning there's little tape to examine on them. With the exception of Derek Anderson, just about everyone else had pretty decent first two-three games.

After those 1-3 games pass, the defenses have given the QB enough different schemes and looks to figure out how to rattle them.

Romo's a good QB. He had the talent to get past the usual three games until he hit a speedbump. It'll take him 5-6 games to adapt to Ds knowing how to gameplan against him. After that, we'll see where his talent level really is.

I have watched every snap he's taken on Dallas and I think he will be a fine player in this league

Botched hold or not, i'm very glad to have him under center of my favorite team. He has a lot of talent and he has a lot of talent to work with too, a recipe for success in fantasy and real world football. I think he'll be a Top 5-8 Fantasy QB next year. I guess time will tell if I'm right, but I would draft him as my starter with confidence.
