Doug Pinnick was a little like Phil Lynott back from the dead.

Thanks for the post. Super cool insight. I caught Lynch’s band about six months ago - they were good, but would have been so much better with dUg.

I'm pretty sure I have purchased at least one copy of every Satch album on disc, cd or digital. While some albums are better than others, still, for me it's hard to pick one album let alone song above the others, he's just an awesome guitar player.  Here's a couple of favs off the top of my head :

The ones that get the most rotation for me are Big Bad Moon and I Believe. I sing the hell out of that latter song quite often.

And Satch/Sammy/Chad Smith (of the RH Chili Peppers)/Mike Anthony...a.k.a. Chickenfoot...do an awesome Highway Star.

YES!!! Another great song from another great album (Not of this Earth) and Hordes of Locusts was on that album, love that one too and I'm sure I wore that one as well!

So, in the early days of CD's, way before you could make copies of CD's, like most people, I stopped buying cassette versions of albums, I'd buy them on CD make tape copies for the cars and keep the CD's in pristine condition.  My God I've got a giant box of CD's buried somewhere in the house.  Ah well. I subscribe to Amazon prime music, for now, and I do like not managing cd's, tapes, albums, digital copies. It used to be fun, now it's kind of a hassle, it's nice to pretty much every song and album on an app.

Yeah, Doro was around for a while. I remember her album covers. I was more going with the general tone and tenor of the countdown.

Quiet Riot little brothers record a pretty excellent song.  This song was written by someone named Jeff Jones who wasn't in the band, but nice going Jeff Jones, song is tight enough that here we are ahead of Spread Eagle.

 
The brothers of Carlos Cavazo and Rudy Sarzo, QR guitarist and bassist respectively, but swap the instruments.  Singer Kelly Hansen has been playing the role of Lou Gramm in Foreigner for the past umpteen years.  Those are the most interesting things about Hurricane.  If you don't believe me, read the article I found below.

In October 1988, a band called Hurricane whirled onto Music Television. The band carried with them all the trappings of 1980’s heavy metal and hard rock, but with a slight variation on the typical rock themes that characterized so many bands of the era.

The band’s highest charting song is an impassioned romp called “I’m On To You.” For rock fans who have heard the band, Hurricane had all the right ingredients to be bigger in the way that bands are considered “big” when everyone has heard of them because of their ubiquity in mass media outlets. Critics have attributed Hurricane’s lack of greater recognition on the shift in musical trends. The band’s album “Over the Edge” contains the single “I’m On To You,” and it was followed by 1990’s, “Slave to the Thrill.” As the late 1980s turned into the 1990s, popular music trends were turning away from hard rock and heavy metal. Which was too bad, really. Hurricane embodied a masculine sensibility that made them stand out from many others. The song “I’m On To You” is memorable 30 years later because of its lyrics and sound.

About Hurricane
The band formed in 1985. In terms of style, the members demonstrated the long, layered hair with leather jackets look that was popular during the era. Their music was hard-driving without being overbearing, and in the case of “I’m On To You” the lyrics were memorable and invited listeners to sing along.
Hurricane was originally comprised of Kelly Hansen on vocals and rhythm guitar, Robert Sarzo on guitar, Tony Cavazo on bass and Jay Schellen on drums. It is worth noting that both Cavazo and Sarzo had older brothers in iconic metal band Quiet Riot.

The band’s catalog essentially consists of four studio albums. Their debut recording “Take What You Want” did not perform as well as “Over the Edge” eventually did. Part of what helped the band in between 1985 and 1988, was more than likely their role as opening acts to bands like Stryper and performers like Gary Moore.

By 1988, more people had heard of Hurricane. While the album “Over the Edge” barely cracked the top 100 (it reached No. 92), the album contained two singles that proved that Hurricane had the hard rock skill set to pull off songs that would resonate with audiences.

The lyrics detail a relationship with a person who is difficult to please. The song begins by revealing to the problematic significant other, “I’m on to you.” Each verse reveals a character flaw in this person. Essentially the lyrics are not too deep to understand. But the band doesn’t necessarily keep things simple. Interesting pairs of rhymes keep up the tension on a lyrical level. Lines like “I don’t wanna hear your lies/being victimized,” and “what I wanna know is/what you want with me/ you’ve got my attention/but not my sympathy” make the song’s sentiment realistic, and likely to be remembered by listeners.
The song’s soundscape is a heavy metal classic complete with in-your-face guitars. One sounds as if it is grinding machinery, while the other hits searing notes that make the lacerating solo logical. The bass and drums thud heavily together and drive the song forward. Hansen’s vocals are full-throated and deeper than a lot of singers in the era. He delivers the multi-syllabic words with ease. Everything works together nicely, which is why the story of Hurricane is kind of a mystery until a person considers the timing. “I’m On To You” peaked at No.33.
Hurricane is still around, but Hansen has taken over vocalist duties for Foreigner. Though the idea of a new Hurricane album is a nice one, no news of a pending album has been released yet.

Very much a personal favorite, and taking us into a little Zeppelin-wannabe twofer.  Sad and frustrating (for me and potentially no one else) that this is no longer streaming anywhere.

I don't know why that is, not ambitious enough to dig that deep into the googlesphere.

Wikipedia on what brought Jake E Lee from Ozzy to Badlands

When Ozzy Osbourne sought a permanent replacement for the deceased Randy Rhoads, he came to Los Angeles to audition lead guitarists. Bassist Dana Strum, who had recommended Rhoads to Osbourne in 1979, this time recommended Lee for the job. Osbourne was torn between Lee and Dokken guitarist George Lynch. Though Osbourne is said to have initially chosen Lynch, he soon changed his mind and Lee became his full-time guitarist for the next five years. Lee joined Osbourne's band in late 1982 following the tour supporting the Speak of the Devil live album that featured Brad Gillis on guitar.

With Lee, bassist Bob Daisley then began writing lyrics and recording the Bark at the Moon album. The songs "So Tired" and "Bark at the Moon" were released as singles, with accompanying videos, and they received regular airplay on MTV and radio. To date, the album has sold three million copies in the U.S.[3]

After Osbourne left the Betty Ford Center where he had been treated for substance abuse, Lee presented him with the music he had written while Osbourne was away. Osbourne was purportedly very satisfied with the quantity and quality of Lee's new music, much of which would be used for the 1986 album The Ultimate Sin. The album was awarded platinum status in May 1986 and was awarded double platinum status in October 1994.[4] Lee and Osbourne once again toured extensively, this time with Phil Soussan on bass, John Sinclair on keyboards and Randy Castillo on drums. In Kansas City, Missouri on April 1, 1986, a concert was filmed which would be released later that year as the home video The Ultimate Ozzy. In 1987, after touring with Ozzy Osbourne in support of The Ultimate Sin album, Lee was fired via telephone by Sharon Osbourne, after the two just had dinner together.[5] Lee was completely caught off guard at the time of his firing and was under the impression he had a solid working gig with the Osbourne camp.

Singer Ray Gillen recorded The Eternal Idol with Black Sabbath in the mid-80's before being replaced with somebody else, during their whole mess.  Bounced around for a few years and ended up doing this project with Jake E. Lee.  Their follow-up was OK but really I'm all about the self-titled debut.  Who knows what their future might have been but SADLY.. and we say this too much around here.. Ray died in 1993 (of HIV related illness)

Almost feels cliche to say, when I heard this on the local rock radio station, it was a natural assumption for 16 year old me that it was a Zeppelin song I had never heard, there will still a few of those.  So as far as the single track that sounds the most Zeppy, these guys still hold the belt, sorry Greta Von Fleak

Besides that, it's hard to believe, thinking back, I heard something on central TX rock radio before I saw it on MTV but radio still did its job from time to time.. 

I picked up the tape, and it wasn't even the worst tape I bought that day.

Sarah finally giving up the ghost on Fitzgerald's just about broke me.  The one and only time (for good reason) I fronted a band was at Zelda's and Fitzgerald's was a second home for me once I got past my metal/glam years. Those clubs are all long gone...Cardi's/Backstage, Hurricane Alley, Barcelona Nights, Millenium, etc.

I was a teen working at a beer distributer and this song was playing one night. This 20-something is buying a case and he hears the song, tilts his head, and this huge smile creeps up on his face. The guy ringing him up is like 70 so he turns to me and is like "Awesome, new Zeppelin!' I was about to tell him no, it's this other band just mimicking them, but he was already on his way out the door. Before the door closed I heard him yell to his buddies that were waiting in the car "Zeppelin's back!!! THEY'RE BACK!!!!"

Huh - I can’t see how he belongs on this list.  I loved his music when I was 15-22 years old, probably my second favorite music over that period (to Metallica).  I just think it’s too far outside this genre.

for anyone who wants some new wave of Hair glam metal I suggest this page on Facebook The New Wave Of Hair Metal. Hasn't been active since last summer but was very active well before this. You can find some newer bands from those days. I would call this genre a favorite of mine and I'm one of those who couldn't stand many of the grunge era bands. Too depressing for me and too much complaining of "what about me" that I think led to such an entitled generation of people now. 

If anyone is interested in newer bands of this era I can gladly put a nice list for you together of some of my favorites

So the target here is glam / hair metal, sure.  But.. first of all, I don't think even I could do 100 pure hair metal acts

Back then, it was kinda all one scene man, it was all metal.  So basically, my rule is, if they were in Metal Edge magazine, and Circus and Kerrang! .. they're fair game

Tough to rate a Poison vs. a Slayer, for sure, lets just make a big ### list and have some fun

Let us begin with a rundown of acts who didn't make the cut, this should provide a good idea of the tent size we're dealing with here

Trixter, Danger Danger, XYZ, Hericane Alice, Electric Boys, Pretty Boy Floyd -- sorry fellas. not good or big enough

Jackyl, Firehouse -- late era garbage, still had their day 

Lizzie Borden, Exodus -- Exodus was hard to take out, but I never really got into them and don't have much to say anyway

T.S.O.L. --  Punk goes glam.  Bad idea.  I still like Road of Gold though

Soundgarden, Alice In Chains. Mother Love Bone/Green River - Never really considered these. Still, AIC started out glam, MLB was 100% glam,  and first I heard of SG was a review of Louder than Love in a metal mag.

Damn Yankees / The Nuge -  Nah

Heart -- Influencers in the 70s, rebounded in the 80s and flirted with the whole look, had huge MTV pop hits and probably toured with some of these acts, but ultimately.. not metal

Billy Squier -- also an influencer, got canceled back in the day because of tight pants, was on my list for a while, but same as Heart, the sound isn't right

We'll see a few classic rock, AOR acts though

XYZ was underrated loved the first album. PBF I really liked for late era glam and Danger Danger are underrated but would've been a bigger success had they come out a lot earlier (I think this last part could apply to many of the later bands)

Firehouse I love and another if they came out sooner would've been bigger. Also CJ Snare has a gosh darn great voice and going strong 

Also Nugent is a gosh darn clown and probably the most overrated guitar player ever. Know a guy who's a talent buyer who met Nugent back in the late 80s. One of the worst acts he had to work with he said. He told me he'd refuse to work with anyone who'd try and hire him after he caught Nugent sexually harassing a 17 yrs old working and the promoter didn't seem to give a dam. Said something to him himself and Ted asked him what his problem was? Told he would've punched Ted if it wasn't for people separating the 2 of them. Ted was completely bombed so he said he'd have most likely knocked him out cold if it did happen. 

Anyway thats my only Ted Nugent rant and honestly this guy doesn't even deserve a rant. He just sucks as a person in general too.

That Number Ones article has a good bit about them getting booed by Cinderella fans 

Tommy Keifer grew up about 10 mins from where I first grew up. Had a chance to meet him a while back before the pandemic at one of the local bars (he was there as part of tribute to the bar we were raising funds to save the place) and he was great. Had a chance to talk to him and it felt like I was just shooting the sh** with an old friend throwing a few back. He talked about Nelson and just talked a massive amount of sh** on them. The Cinderella boys were laughing so hard they couldn't help themselves. Keifer said it wasn't even their decision have them there either.
