Top 100 Heavy Metal and glam rock acts from the MTV era - it's still real to me (1 Viewer)

Have lived in SC for 15 years, can confirm

i heard the same in Sewickley, when i went el-cheapo during one of my first visits to Pittsburgh, and decided to hit their Motor Inn.

nice enough digs, but the courtesy van driver who schlepped us to & fro was taken aback by my attire, etc.

Iron Maiden is the best metal band in the universe. When I was in Jr. High/HS, my bedroom walls were essentially wallpapered with Eddie posters. I still put AC/DC ahead of them in my personal all-time list, but that's mostly based on nostalgia. I rarely listen to AC/DC anymore, but regularly spin Iron Maiden.

I loved the Di'Anno stuff, but Dickinson was born for their sound. It's perfection. Samson was pretty good; here are a couple of their tunes that I dig: Bright Lights and Vice Versa. I first heard Vice Versa on a great comp set curated by Lars Ulrich, called New Wave of British Heavy Metal '79 Revisited; there's a bunch of great stuff there.

I will come out and say that Maiden's output in the 80s is the best run of albums by any band that I'm aware of. Prove me wrong:

Iron Maiden 1980

Killers 1981

The Number of the Beast 1982

Piece of Mind 1983

Powerslave 1984

Live After Death 1985

Somewhere In Time 1986

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son 1988

I included Live After Death because it's maybe the best live record I've ever heard, it's an absolute masterpiece of source material, and it was my true introduction to Iron Maiden. A friend had played me parts of Powerslave when I was about 11, and I wasn't ready for it. Fast forward two years, I bought a used cassette of Live After Death and was hopelessly hooked. Eight spectacular albums in nine years!

After Dickinson left the band, they fell off musically. I had a chance to see them live at a club in this period, and passed it up, which I regret. After he rejoined the band, the quality of music returned to a semblance of their heyday. I did finally catch them on their lengthy Book of Souls tour, which was spectacular. I stood for the entire show, with a stupid grin plastered across my mug for the entirety of the set. It was nirvana. I also absolutely love that album, it's easily my favorite since Seventh Son. I also saw them on the Legacy of the Beast tour, which was equally great, as they played several songs they hadn't from the last tour, including Flight of Icarus, a personal favorite. Watching them play The Trooper, Number of The Beast, and Aces High are memories that give me chills. I still haven't seen them play Phantom of the Opera or The Clairvoyant, two more of my personal faves. Someday hopefully.

There should be a thread counting down the top 100 Maiden songs. I wish I had time...

UP THE IRONS!

:headbang:

"Flyyyy as hiiiiigh as the ssuuuUUUUUUUUHHUHHHHUUUUHHHNNNNNNNNN!   AAAAAAAAAAHAHAAYYAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAA!"

This is also the first Iron Maiden song my 10-year old son listened to, and liked. Wasted Years, 2 Minutes to Midnight, and Run to the Hills are on deck.

I'm just happy to meet some fellow Ratt and Tesla fans.    :headbang:

I thought I was on an island with these two...or at least on an island with relatively few.  They appear to be more well liked than I anticipated.

Great write-up, thank you Herb!

A sad weekend here where we had to have an old dog be led off to pasture - in much gentler fashion than these things were handled in my redneck childhood, happily enough for that - -   I am only a bit behind and still hope to get an 'M' band out tonight, let's try and remember the good years!!!..

Bummer , had to do that myself on New Years Eve 😥

I have no idea who the final three are, which gives one an excellent idea of how shallow my time spent in this category (categories) is, but it is bugging me that I cannot figure it out the top-ranked easily.

...Wait, pretty sure I just figured out who is #1.

RATT was pretty big in 84. I liked them a lot. Plus, the airwaves weren't flooded with a slew of hair metal bands yet. If Round and Round came out two years later, it probably would not have had the same impact. They'd be White Lion.

This is my wheelhouse, and I am embarrassed to say I am not sure who's left.  1 obvious one, and I have a guess at another one but would have to look at the playlist to see if I missed them.  :oldunsure:

Ah, I've now figured out two of the top three.

Update: I'm good on all 3 now.

It reminds me of Jack Black doing his Tenacious D shtick.  They sound like they should be headlining the local renaissance fair

Bruce would have rocked the HELL out of a Ren Faire and melted the face off the guy mincing around with a lute (or zither, or some ish) all while wearing his Beverly Goldberg yoga pants.

And every, single one of those drama nerds, faux blacksmiths, and wannabe wiccans would have thrown the goat for more before running off to slay a pretend dragon (with Flight of Icarus cranked to 15 as the soundtrack).

Pretty sure one of the greatest feelings that exists is you're rocking out to some cool metal song, then it ends and all of a sudden the opening riff of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner begins, and you're compelled to turn it up to 11.

I think I'm going to need a really good explanation as to why one particular name was left off the list.

And I have a kick ### one to add to it.

It may seem crazy, but I think Maiden is underrated. As well-respected as they are, I don’t think they are widely recognized as “the best metal band in the universe.”  And that’s precisely what they are.
They are the godfathers of epic, prog heavy metal.

Second to none!!!!!!

Top 10 Maiden tune for me......lord man. Has any hard rock band from the 80’s aged as well as these guys?

Hell freaking no.

And their live show is as good as ever. Simply insane.

When Warcraft first hit the scene back in the early 2000’s....my brother-in-law and I would be on our PC’s.....headphones on with Maiden and Dio playing and melting our ears while we did dungeon runs.....oh the memories...the flying and the magic and the “kind” filling the air.

Sorry sorry, I got hit with work last night, not a common thing luckily, but west coast stuff, it happens, so I'm behind and I wanted to give this band full due... they feel like the most controversial somehow!

Our top 3 acts, unlike #4, were popular with mainstream audiences, for whatever it is or isn't worth to purists - and I don't even know how I would fit into that category - well, it counts for something here

So this one is going to kind of get done in pieces today, as we try to get things moving again!

3. Metallica

I was thinking, after all these years, in my head Lightning and Puppets are very similar, masterful thrash metal records, but I had to make myself listen again, not for that but because I wanted to talk about Cliff

But let's be real, this is a young bad ### metal band still feeling their way in places

https://youtu.be/H0XGswUuZU0

And this is grown ### men

https://youtu.be/K6LA7v1PApU

Things changed after this.  I wanted to pose a few morbid questions, like what happens if no one dies on that Swedish road, what happens if it's Kirk whose bunk that was (tbh quickly replaced, but long term effect?).. what happens if it's LARS ... we all know what happens if it's James.

They talk about Justice like it was the logical conclusion to their thrash metal years.  I wonder what Cliff would have to say about that.  I love Cliff but he was not driving the sound.  James Hetfield drove the sound.

More to come from me, let's goooooooooooo

I was in high school and some kid I barely knew loaned me Ride The Lightning just to listen to for a little while that day, we were talking about somebody hairy I was into and he said I need to check out Metallica - and I was just walking around the parking lot with my, well, Walkman -- FIGHT FIYAH WITH FIYAH --  I had heard fast music before, was mostly reluctant, because it hadn't really caught me before.  This did and I got Lighting and Puppets pretty quickly after that..

Master of Puppets is it , whatever they did after that, it's whatever.  But they did put out a massive hard rock record... some years later but still in our window

What's a better hard rock record from that general period than Black album... Appetite for sure... 3-4 albums that came out of Seattle... fn Blood Sugar Sex Magic.... it all started to blend in the mainstream

Honorable mention, the perfect time for the perfect crime, FAITH NO MORE was on this list but I decided, no, they belong on another list, another time

But they jumped right into the MTV hard rotation in 1990 and were tightly aligned with Metallica

You could put Zombie Eaters on this playlist and it wouldn't seem particularly out of place

But their two albums from that period aren't quite in the same conversation with the ones I referred to above..

Well if Iron Maiden wasn't my #1 - Metallica certainly is.

Seen Metallica about a dozen times - most memorable was 1988 Monsters of Rock at Giant Stadium. Skipped my brother's High School graduation for this show and I'm glad i did - just wow - man did they rip it up.

Just it your face - take no prisoners - metal.

Only one thing needs to be said for giving Metallica the #1 seed right here . . .

Master of Puppets

Epic really is a good song. I also dig Introduce Yourself and We Care A Lot (both versions).

But my favorite is Out Of Nowhere. They killed it with this song on SNL.

I would listen to Introduce Yourself all the time as even a college student. I dug that record. Pre-Mike Patton days they were an interesting band. Once Mike got there, maybe even more so. Remember Mr. Bungle? They were...terrible.

The first time I heard Metallica was at L' Amour in Brooklyn, most likely at a Twisted Sister show since I went there often to see them. The DJ was blasting tunes in between bands and when he put on Trapped Under Ice, the entire place exploded as if a band just came on stage. I had never seen any song get that kind of reaction before. I knew of Metallica but never heard their music. I bought Ride the Lightning the next day. It wasn't much longer before they released Master of Puppets heading into the greatest year of metal ever in 1986. It really was the dawn of a new age and Master ruled them all, even if I did personally prefer Peace Sells.

I bought And Justice for All but that was the end of Metallica for me. I was in a big minority in that I didn't like One and to me it signaled too much of a departure. I leaned more towards Megadeth and Slayer anyway and eventually bands like Sepultura, Pantera, Vio-Lence, Death Angel, Overkill, Dream Death and some doom stuff like St. Vitus and Candlemass  were more my speed.

None of that matters since Metallica deserves all the praise they get. You can say they sold out, they lost their mojo, whatever. They brought thrash to the masses and gave metal the kick in the ### it needed and will always get that credit from me. It was a unforgettable time to live through. :headbang:

Metallica was the first thrash band I was into. Master Of Puppets was so good I listened to it until age 28 or so before adulthood took over and the album gently faded away into what one can call youthful experience.

Whenever people tell me they like Mr. Bungle, I just assume they're playing contrarian.

Regarding Metallica, I like them...I think? But I feel I should like them more than I do.

No equivocating on this though...Master Of Puppets is a masterpiece. I think my favorite Metallica song is Disposable Heroes.

I like their cover of Blitzkrieg. Blackened is cool too.

Later stuff that's okay is Hero Of The Day and Moth Into Flame. And I suppose Whiskey In The Jar.

BACK TO THE FRONT!!!

Can't believe it's been 30 years since seeing Faith No More open for Metallica and GnR at RFK.  Even though I really like FNM, they were just overwhelmed by the occasion.  Metallica though completely owned it - GnR should have been opening for them.

Most memorable Metallica show for me was 5 years later when they played for free in a South Philly parking lot:

Banned in Philly

The UCR piece digs up an old Daily News interview where then-councilperson, now-mayor Jim Kenney calls the parking lot setting of the event a mistake. “Once again, you’re going to have problems with crowds in a residential area.,” he said. “You’ll have noise and traffic congestion. If the heavy-metal rock group wants to hold a concert here, why not hold it inside the CoreStates Spectrum? And if you’re putting all these Beavis and Butt-Heads in the parking lot, where are you going to park the cars?”

Saw this concert at the Meadowlands.  I was most interested in seeing GNR but my friend's brother drove and he only cared about Metallica.  About halfway through the GNR set he started bugging us to leave.  I was able to stall for a while but it was his car and he was older so eventually he won out.  I ended up hearing part of the encore (Paradise City I think, maybe something else too) from the parking lot as we were leaving.  Was so pissed off.
