The nicest thing I can say about Don Henley is that he's better than Richard Marx.Honestly Jim Morrison couldn't carry Don Henley's jock. The Doors just suck. Sorry to have to be the one to tell you that both your muscial and college basketball tastes are terrible, but.....The Doors and Syracuse? Yeah, close that oven door tight Nipsey. You got people poo-pooing the Doors but putting The Eagles in their top 5? The Eagles?? Goodness gracious.
North Mississippi AllstarsOn most of these lists, Nirvana is the most recent band. Who are some of the more recent bands that you would consider for this list?

heh, I keep forgetting that. That and him being Canadian and all.Neil Young is my favorite, but I didn't put him in my list for the "individual" reason. The U.S. has been more dominated by individuals (who may have had backing bands, but for all intents and purposes, were still individual acts):
Elvis, Springsteen, Tom Petty, Hendrix, Dylan...

Social Distortion
My list would include Imagine Dragons and Matchbox 20. Those won't be popular, however. On most of these lists, Nirvana is the most recent band. Who are some of the more recent bands that you would consider for this list?
I kind of think you need 20 years to be considered "top 5"On most of these lists, Nirvana is the most recent band. Who are some of the more recent bands that you would consider for this list?
Not that he's getting love in this thread, but Jimi Hendrix and his band need not apply here.I kind of think you need 20 years to be considered "top 5"On most of these lists, Nirvana is the most recent band. Who are some of the more recent bands that you would consider for this list?
By no means am I saying "top 5" (Nirvana probably doesn't make my top 5 either) but Queens of the Stone Age have a pretty solid 15 year run going. And when it's all sad and done I suspect many will put the Foo Fighters pretty high.On most of these lists, Nirvana is the most recent band. Who are some of the more recent bands that you would consider for this list?
Jack White's run of bands has been has better than a bunch of artists mentioned in this thread.By no means am I saying "top 5" (Nirvana probably doesn't make my top 5 either) but Queens of the Stone Age have a pretty solid 15 year run going. No, I mean 20 years gone by. Then let's see where you stand. Not that he's getting love in this thread, but Jimi Hendrix and his band need not apply here.I kind of think you need 20 years to be considered "top 5"On most of these lists, Nirvana is the most recent band. You forgot to mention the blues. The Allman Brothers have a lot of blues in their music.Allman Bros. As a straight forward band, incorporating American roots, southern charm and perspective and a lil country, maybe the greatest "straight forward" rock band we've ever produced. Some of, if not the, greatest live shows ever.
I've never considered Dylan as being in a band. I think of him as a solo artist.Dylan. Arguably the best song writer ever. Tremendous impact, regardless.
This. Leaving them of the list is almost akin to leaving The Beatles off a UK list.Any lists without the Beach Boys are doing it wrong. Brian Wilson had more talent than most of these bands combined.

The are a duo , not a band.I like the Simon and Garfunkel pick. I'm just not sure they qualify as a band - can I get a ruling or do we not overrule Pickles?
Man, there are so many.........On most of these lists, Nirvana is the most recent band. Who are some of the more recent bands that you would consider for this list?
:jealous:Got tickets to see Alabama Shakes tonight! Hope they are as good as Uruk says they are!
Heard 2 ads in a row on network tv the other day. One used the Pixies & the other used the Ramones.Pixies
Yo La Tengo
Ramones
MC5
Velvet Undergruond
I guess this is shtick? He clearly is a prolific singer-songwriter! He has played by himself and with various backing bands. I would include him.How can we include Dylan? He isn't a singer-songwriter, player by himself, with various bands and his most famous backing band has already been ruled Canadian.
That's probably a fair point. Somehow time has forgotten their impactThis. Leaving them of the list is almost akin to leaving The Beatles off a UK list.Any lists without the Beach Boys are doing it wrong. Brian Wilson had more talent than most of these bands combined.
Dylan would obviously be top 5 if we are talking longevity, influence and popularity.I guess this is shtick? He clearly is a prolific singer-songwriter! He has played by himself and with various backing bands. I would include him.How can we include Dylan? He isn't a singer-songwriter, player by himself, with various bands and his most famous backing band has already been ruled Canadian.
God only knows why. That's probably a fair point. Somehow time has forgotten their impactThis. Leaving them of the list is almost akin to leaving The Beatles off a UK list.Any lists without the Beach Boys are doing it wrong. Brian Wilson had more talent than most of these bands combined.
Agreed. The Eagles are one of those bands that have 10-12 songs I enjoy a lot - kind of like The Doobie Brothers - but that's it. I think they are a band that everyone knows all of their popular songs really well, so it is easy to call them one of the best. They are a very "safe" band to mention in discussions of the best bands. Plus, when they tour, they can play songs from their respective other bands/solo careers, so it then gives the illusion of them having even more known songs than they really do. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people thought New York Minute is an Eagles tune. You got people poo-pooing the Doors but putting The Eagles in their top 5? The Eagles?? Goodness gracious.
You're just never going to break on through to those kind of people. You got people poo-pooing the Doors but putting The Eagles in their top 5? The Eagles?? Goodness gracious.
It was just being a little buzzed, I meant IS a singer songwriter. However, Bob Dylan is not a band.I guess this is shtick? He clearly is a prolific singer-songwriter! He has played by himself and with various backing bands. I would include him.How can we include Dylan? Well-played...You're just never going to break on through to those kind of people. You got people poo-pooing the Doors but putting The Eagles in their top 5? The Eagles?? Goodness gracious.
Clearly the case. Not even remotely close to top 5 though.Abrantes said:Also, let's be sensible. Three of the four members of Talking Heads are American, and the fourth (Byrne) came to the US when he was 8 or 9 years old. American band through and through.
Spoon and Modest Mouse come immediately to mind.On most of these lists, Nirvana is the most recent band. Who are some of the more recent bands that you would consider for this list?
stop making sense.Abrantes said:Also, let's be sensible. Three of the four members of Talking Heads are American, and the fourth (Byrne) came to the US when he was 8 or 9 years old. American band through and through.
I put Pixies (as did a few others) and Yo La Tengo. I saw somebody (probably applejack) put GBV... another great choice.Spoon and Modest Mouse come immediately to mind.On most of these lists, Nirvana is the most recent band. Who are some of the more recent bands that you would consider for this list?
I saw that, and I've seen Apple Jack's love of GBV and Robert Pollard in many threads. I actually thought of your post watching hockey today, as "Gigantic" is all over the place on the commercials, and I was wondering when the Pixies became not just huge, but a ringing cultural point that almost everybody will understand, including people watching a sports telecast. Again, I've seen how big they've gotten, but that would have been almost unthinkable a decade ago.I put Pixies (as did a few others) and Yo La Tengo. I forgot all about Beastie Boys- they definitely belong.
I am too lazy to look... but The Byrds should be mentioned as well if htey haven't already.
