Top 5 American Bands of All Time - **official thread** (1 Viewer)

On most of these lists, Nirvana is the most recent band. Who are some of the more recent bands that you would consider for this list?

You got people poo-pooing the Doors but putting The Eagles in their top 5? The Eagles?? Goodness gracious.
Honestly Jim Morrison couldn't carry Don Henley's jock. The Doors just suck. Sorry to have to be the one to tell you that both your muscial and college basketball tastes are terrible, but.....The Doors and Syracuse? Yeah, close that oven door tight Nipsey.
The nicest thing I can say about Don Henley is that he's better than Richard Marx.

My list would include Imagine Dragons and Matchbox 20. Those won't be popular, however.

By no means am I saying "top 5" (Nirvana probably doesn't make my top 5 either) but Queens of the Stone Age have a pretty solid 15 year run going. And when it's all sad and done I suspect many will put the Foo Fighters pretty high.

Jack White's run of bands has been has better than a bunch of artists mentioned in this thread.

I think I'm drunk.

I kind of think you need 20 years to be considered "top 5"
Not that he's getting love in this thread, but Jimi Hendrix and his band need not apply here.
No, I mean 20 years gone by. Then let's see where you stand.

That Jimi matters as much as he does says a lot about the material he put out in the short time he was around.

Dylan. Arguably the best song writer ever. Tremendous impact, regardless.

Jimi Hendrix Experience. The band with the greatest guitar player ever must be included.

Grateful Dead. No other band has so connected with so many people and lives. The Dead moved beyond the music in a meaningful way to create and engage a community more than any other band in history. All without losing sight of the music.

Allman Bros. As a straight forward band, incorporating American roots, southern charm and perspective and a lil country, maybe the greatest "straight forward" rock band we've ever produced. Some of, if not the, greatest live shows ever.

Five is one of:

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - has any band had such a broad range for an audience ?

Metallica - not really my fav but transcended a genre that they helped create and go mainstream while having musical chops as great as anyone.

Aerosmith - straight up rock and roll through the generations. Merged with hip hop to become more relevant than ever for a second career greater than the first. And a lead singer with chops as good as anyone for the genre.

Van Halen - self taught genius. While a few front men, with their straight up sick musical and technical ability coupled with the consummate entertainer and party embracer David Lee Roth. Perhaps more "epic" songs than anyone else vying for that fifth spot.

Honorable mention:

Beastie Boys - while not technically a rock band, rock was the spine of their hip hop. If the counted would be top 5 easy and likely top 3. Hell they are more rock than REM. And I like REM, just not really rock.

You forgot to mention the blues. The Allman Brothers have a lot of blues in their music.

I like the Simon and Garfunkel pick. I'm just not sure they qualify as a band - can I get a ruling or do we not overrule Pickles?

Man, there are so many.........

NoMiss All Stars

Alabama Shakes

Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears

St Paul & the Broken Bones (for serious, check them out)

Golden Smog

Allison Kraus & Union Station

Dirty Dozen Brass Band

...just off the top of my head

How can we include Dylan? He isn't a singer-songwriter, player by himself, with various bands and his most famous backing band has already been ruled Canadian.

I guess this is shtick? He clearly is a prolific singer-songwriter! He has played by himself and with various backing bands. I would include him.

Dylan would obviously be top 5 if we are talking longevity, influence and popularity.

If I did a personal preference list, however, Dylan wouldn't make my top 5. Hell, he wouldn't make my top 10, 20, 50, etc.

Agreed. The Eagles are one of those bands that have 10-12 songs I enjoy a lot - kind of like The Doobie Brothers - but that's it. I think they are a band that everyone knows all of their popular songs really well, so it is easy to call them one of the best. They are a very "safe" band to mention in discussions of the best bands. Plus, when they tour, they can play songs from their respective other bands/solo careers, so it then gives the illusion of them having even more known songs than they really do. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people thought New York Minute is an Eagles tune.

It was just being a little buzzed, I meant IS a singer songwriter. However, Bob Dylan is not a band.

In terms of Popularity:

Skynyrd

Eagles

Aerosmith

Metallica

Doors

Hon Mention

Van Halen

Nirvana

Petty

Dead

Jimi Hendrix Experience

Springsteen

Beach Boys

The Band

Allman Brothers

Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble

Little Feat

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

I consider The Band to be American. Absolutely.

Also, let's be sensible. Three of the four members of Talking Heads are American, and the fourth (Byrne) came to the US when he was 8 or 9 years old. American band through and through.

Clearly the case. Not even remotely close to top 5 though.

stop making sense.

Spoon and Modest Mouse come immediately to mind.
I put Pixies (as did a few others) and Yo La Tengo. I saw somebody (probably applejack) put GBV... another great choice.

I forgot all about Beastie Boys- they definitely belong.

I am too lazy to look... but The Byrds should be mentioned as well if htey haven't already.

I saw that, and I've seen Apple Jack's love of GBV and Robert Pollard in many threads. I actually thought of your post watching hockey today, as "Gigantic" is all over the place on the commercials, and I was wondering when the Pixies became not just huge, but a ringing cultural point that almost everybody will understand, including people watching a sports telecast. Again, I've seen how big they've gotten, but that would have been almost unthinkable a decade ago.

Beastie Boys also belong in the conversation without any embarrassment. Paul's Boutique is a masterpiece.

Have the White Stripes been mentioned? Part of greatness is immortality, and Seven Nation Army is just that.

If we are talking bands only (tossing Springsteen, Dylan, and Hendrix), I'd put Metallica and Nirvana on the list.

But I'd also put Bob Jovi ahead of the Eagles...they suck. So my opinion probably doesn't count.
