What do you guys think? It depends if Joe Haden is covering him or not
If it was me, and it's not, I would try to trade Torrey Smith as fast as you can after his next big game or relatively decent game. Otherwise, I would bench him for other options. In standard scoring, I think you hold to sell after a productive game. In PPR, I think you just sell right now, sell low if you have to, but move the guy off your roster.
There is clearly a divergent view of offensive philosophy running through the Raven's organization. I think it's easy to blame Cam Cameron, but I think he's getting the "Marc Trestman 2.0" treatment here. Clearly part of the Raven's front office wants a big strike offense that is aggressive and constantly attacking and infusing a lot of no huddle. IMHO, part of this is on the basis of prevailing groupthink with the Ravens that they must justify the big money contract they are going to give Flacco this offseason.
The issue driving this is basic tautology. In basic terms, it's shooting an arrow at a wall, then getting some paint and drawing a target around the arrow strike. The Ravens are desperately trying to convince themselves that they can be the New England Patriots 2.0 and Flacco can be Tom Brady 3.0.
Here's the problem, the current personnel package is suited for a rushing dominant offense. The current "team" situation, including injuries is best suited for a rushing oriented offense. The Ravens are third to last in rushing defense. We are talking some loose run defense. At the bottom are the Bills, where the run defense is like trying to prevail chastity with a nympho. The Saints run defense can hold like the girl who acts as the town bicycle. And then there are the Ravens, with massive carnage on their defensive unit, that can defend the run like a two dollar whore at closing time.
Let me see.... the opposition can run at will and control the clock. My defense is hurting bad. My best WR has questionable mitts and has a tough time with press coverage. My QB1 will NEVER be confused for Tom Brady 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0. So what should I do? That's right, I should step on the gas on offense, be pass dominant and force my defense out there some more to get ground chucked into the turf which not only overtaxes that unit but leaves your offense on the sideline, hurting offensive rhythm.
Oh yeah, and I'll also pay my full back nearly 4 million bucks this year to spend half the game trying to quick strike Boldin but ignore a top 3 RB in Ray Rice.
This becomes a Kobe Bryant Problem. Is it success if it's about volume over efficiency? I'm an old man and I can score 25 points a game in the NBA if someone let me be a ball stopping chucker that heaves 35 shots a game. But what about efficiency?
Flacco's efficiency is relatively stable, the only way to uptick his statistical production is by volume.
Kurt Warner can make Ricky Proehl dangerous. Brett Farve can make Bill Shroeder seem dangerous. Flacco is not the caliber of QB1 who can weaponize his WR corps. He will give you something for something but he will not give you something for nothing. He cannot elevate the game of those around him.
The Ravens do not have the personnel to run the kind of offense they are trying to run, not with true efficiency. ( I'm defining efficiency as how your offense operates within a team concept and compliments a defensive style that actually give you a consistent chance to win) Smith is a decoy who will give you a few feast games but also some famine games. Given the clear disconnect with the offensive system, I see way more famine games this season.
Here's what the Ravens seemed to NOT learn from the Patriots while trying so hard to ape them. The Patriots will build it's philosophy around it's personnel. If it's easier to find DE than 3-4 outside linebackers, then shift to a base 4-3. You can't hammer a square peg into a round hole.
Torrey Smith. Sell. Sell. Sell.
