Torrey Smith...what's the deal? (1 Viewer)

Curious to see what the pool thinks of Smith and whether you are looking to buy/sell/hold him. He was a guy that I didn't target in any drafts because there were others I liked more around his tier and later but thought he might end up being a decent player as he looks to have some nice skill.

I don't watch a lot of Ravens games but one thing I can't get out of my head when thinking about him and looking at the stats is Lee Evans. Is he a one trick pony, feast or famine receiver that came on like gangbusters, had a few monster games but then the league gets the book on him, cuts off the over the top routes which then makes him into a very spotty guy that you can't start?

Holding. Flacco's targeting has been...weird. 15 to Pitta and 10 to Rice this week so everything is staying pretty short. I can't imagine Smith will only be a decoy long term, he's the most talented of those WRs so they need to get him involved.

I suspect, in this forum, most people are going to tell you to hold becuase there were A LOT of people that were high on him. My opinion is to sell because all the perceived reasons for him making that next big leap were vastly conjecture. People assume the new system, his speed, etc just made it a given that he would ascend. People even just universally were speaking as if it was fact that he had learned more in terms of better route running, etc. These things MAY BE true, but I haven't seen them in print from the people that matter (Coach) and I haven't seen it in the first two weeks.

What I ahve seen so far (yes, its early..small sample size) is that he continues to be a deep bomb threat and that's about it. I don't see him, series after series, running these intricate routes or working areas that he didn't last year. He looks to me to be the same guy as before. I thnk a lot of people assumed that this new no huddle offense would be something that translated into bombs away throwing but from what I've seen so far, its really about tempo, but is still everybit as much short game as it long game. So until i see Torrey out there working the middle, running off natural screens in the slot and doing a lot more than just blazing down the sideline as the outside guy, I don't think he is what people were expecting. So, I would sell to the person thinking he is that guy.

that's kinda how I see it. For me to really want to buy a WR, I want him to be a highly targeted part of the offense so you have a better chance of week to week consistency. He was certainly a big bomb threat last year but if you're a one trick pony, no matter how good you are at that trick the NFL will take it away from you and you'll need to adjust. Kind of like DJax from Philly as well.

How good are New England's corners? They shut down Larry Fitz & the crappy Tennessee WRs. I figured this game wouldve been a shootout but who the heck knows.

Agreed. I liked the guy and drafted him, but I ended up trading him before week 1. The hype train had gone so far out of the station, that people were discussing him as equal to Harvin in trade negotiations. I'm betting it's died down a bit, but I think you could still find someone who wants him bad, so there's no reason to hold him out of fear of selling low.

Well unless you are playing with a shark, who is going to buy this guy. And even then, nobody is going to offer you anything of too much value for him. If my few leagues without him, I'd swap WR4-WR5 types like DHB but most people aren't going to value this guy at all. So the correct play would be to hold unless your league is full of people on here.

I think you'd be surprised. He was a very popular sleeper this summer.

I've been getting repeated offers of Michael Bush for the guy in a PPR league. There's still interest there.

Yes, I'm aware that is why I own him. I think he'll still be fine but most casual fans still probably don't know and even most fantasy guys who had him as sleepers aren't going to pay much. Usually after two weeks when sleepers are still asleep, they don't carry much value. You might be able to dump him for something but I doubt too much. I feel like you might as well hold till he blows up for a week or two then dump him. He really is at rock bottom value right now.

One fear that I have with a guy like this is that you start him for the 1st few weeks, he does nothing, you bench him. Then you put him in the next week and he does nothing or has an ok game and it's just that constant yo-yo where you are always a week behind.

I agree with most of what's here but Flacco did have him wide open on a post route to the end zone and completely muffed the throw. He put a nice juke move on his defender and was open inside. Flacco just muffed the throw.Wait until he has that big game and sell immediately for the best you can get.

Is it because Flacco is checking down constantly? That would be why the TEs/Boldin are getting all the looks. Perhaps all the preseason hype was a smokescreen and they are trying to run an offense similar to New England/Indy (under the Manning years)? 2 receptions per game for 45 - 55 yards isn't gonna cut it on my roster. I traded away Randall Cobb for Smith and Givens in STL. So far I have mud on my face.

I'm not certain of their content but I do seem to read a lot of things about baltimore's offense where it is mentioned in comparison to the New england offense. Its easy to see those comparisons in some ways. I agree with the idea that this has the attempted look of the Manning offense in the sense that they really appear to be attempting to take advantage of dictating the defense's personnell, their ability to swap players, etc. Sometime they run really quick, like the old Bills stuff way back when. Then other times they come up to the line but then spend ten seconds do other stuff (very similar to the Colts in some ways).

I was going to hold onto Smith but there are simply better options out there, and my WR's are decent enough and I have enough debt that I can afford to cut bait. I don't see this coming back to haunt me.

I like his upside but Fantasy is about studs. He's not going to win you any games on a week to week basis. Unless you think Baltimore will be in any shootouts anytime soon. He's an unproven entity.

Might be next year until he really breaks out.

I have a feeling he's going to explode this week or next for 150/2 TDs and will be on a lot of people's bench. He's the type of fantasy WR that you have to start all season otherwise you will miss out on the good games.

I've also seen people comparing the Ravens to NE, and there certainly seems to be some evidence that the Ravens want to go in that direction. The problem is, this plan of the Ravens is insane. They have Ray Rice, not Tom Brady. And no matter how much they try to ignore that, they eventually have to go back to what actually wins them games.

For me to start a WR (ppr or non) in non-bye-weeks, I need him to be an integral part of the offense. As a previous poster said, Torrey is not. He is a deep threat. I'm sure he'll explode for 180 yards and 2 td's in some future, random week...but he shows that he can get the ball a variety of different ways, I'll pass.

I'm holding. Smith is a deep threat and my league awards long TD bonuses and yardage bonuses so 1 or 2 long TD catches can mean big points. While he has yet to make any big plays, he has drawn some long pass interference calls that could easily have been big play TDs.

I chose TSmith in the subscriber contest expecting very hit/miss production. The Ravens are just not targeting him enough to make him a regular fantasy starter. 3 targets first week in a blowout, and 5 last week in a tight game. Pitta had 9 and 15. Honestly, someone like Brian Hartline in Miami (8 and 12 targets) is looking like a better play than Smith right now (and likely available on the waiver wire in most leagues). A player must have high opportunity to be a good fantasy play, otherwise they are just a lottery ticket.

Well for as much as this guy is apparently hit or miss, he is still tied for 51 in two bad games. And he has actually been consistent with 50+ yards both games. Ahead of player like Colston, Dez, Fitz, Decker, Welker, etc. And you paid a fraction of the price for Smith as opposed to them. So I guess those guys are bigger boom or bust guys? Either way, I like what I saw in preseason where he was used throughout the passing game. So far, the Ravens have been in a blowout and a game against possible the best duo of CBs in the game. Makes sense they focused on TEs and slot receivers against rookies on the Eagles. And if fantasy is about studs, how many players/teams are in your league? How many stud WRs are there? There might be 10-12 studs out there so you have to roll with Smiths or Cobbs or Mike Williams of the worlds.

Good thing I want to hold bc I don't think I could sell currently.

Edit - me spell good.
