I'm sure everyone has one or two owners in their league that likes to sit on trade offers. When someone makes me an offer, I usually try to give them a response as soon as I am able to evaluate the trade. If there is going to be a delay (work, vacation, etc) I send them an email and let them know it's going to take a little longer, and that they could expect a decision by X day.

What do you think is an acceptable time for an owner to respond? Also, I am not talking about owners that have not logged on to the league site recently. I am talking about someone that checks in 2-3 times daily, but just sits on trade offers, or even worse counter offers.

 
You should always respond to a trade, at the least hit decline when you log on. If you want to think about it how hard is it to just hit reply and say " Hey I kind of interested, but I don't have time right now to think about it, give me a day or two".

The worst is when I inquire about a player and they say ya I will move that guy, make me an offer and they do one of two things they either out right reject the trade and don't counter, or they decline and say that isn't what I am looking for, but don't give me any idea what they are looking for. Then they act like I am trying to rip them off, remember the other person isn't a mind reader they have no idea how you value your player or what players they want from your team.

 
If it is a really good offer, they shouldn't take much time to decide. If it is a really bad offer, they shouldn't take much time to decide. My experience is that people who leave offers open for an extended period of time (like a week) don't accept them.

Personally, I give them 48 hours (longer on a weekend) and if I haven't heard anything, withdraw the offer. If they feel they have missed something they will get back to you - if they don't they weren't going to accept the offer anyway.

Excellent points. The good and bad are always the ones with the quickest responses. I just wonder what the other owners could be thinking. You do your research, you make your decision and you act. Not sure what you are going to learn on day 5 that you didn't learn on day 1 or 2 of research.

That is all very fine, but in some of my leagues the other owners won't do any pre-trade discussions. If you inquire about a player they won't respond at all or simply say "Send me an offer." So there really is no getting to the other owner, discussing, and then being in an agreement on a trade before an offer is sent. Yes, it would be nice to follow the best trade etiquette, but not everyone in my leagues is familiar with Emily Post.

Same here. I typically set MFL to auto-expire the offer after 48 hours. I just don't have time to sit around and wait for an eventual decline without any feedback (which is typically what happens with the owners who take longer than that to accept/counter, or send an email).

I've seen the boxes in MFL to set an expiration time for the trade. But, I always felt it was being a little pushy. I wouldn't want someone to send me an offer, and then tell me when I need to respond by. But, that's just me. I've seen owners suddenly stall even during negotiations. You send an offer, the next day he sends a counter offer, you send a counter....... and then nothing. (crickets) As someone mentioned, the trade is probably not going to get accepted.
 
Did I really just see an Emily Post reference on here? That's either the greatest or the worst post ever. Really not sure which though.

It is just as much for me as them. In the off season I will give a little more time, but during the season things change too quickly to wait for someone to make up their mind. There is nothing worse than putting out an offer on Monday and having someone accept it the next Wednesday after something happened to change player opinion (I am usually attentive enough to prevent that from happening, but sometimes things can slip your mind).

Which is my reasoning for saying the best trade etiquette is don't submit an offer unless you've agreed on a trade.

Many commishes are willing to step in and stop a trade if events transpire between offer and acceptance that blatantly change the value of the players, like if a player involved breaks a leg.

But it can be more subtle things than that. Maybe the backup RB on an NFL team gets injured and so your prospects for the starting RB who is in the trade have improved a bit. As a commish I don't think that's blatant enough I would step in and stop the other owner from accepting the trade.

Better to agree to the trade first and just use the site to execute it. Or barring that, set it to expire after a day with a note that says if they want to do it and but didn't get to it in time, to just offer it back to you again.

 
I try to get a feel for how an owner likes their offer served.

I often follow it up with an email text or phone call if they are less responsive or I want to point out something.

I have no problem withdrawing an offer and follow up with a let me know email after a couple days. Most owners are sorry and make an effort to follow up with an offer.
