Training camp/pre-season--DON'T FALL FOR THE HYPE (1 Viewer)

I once read every tidbit and morsel I could during the frustrating month of August. I watched pre-season box scores, adjusted draft rankings, and bought into the hype. And like a real junkie, every time a tidbit worked out, I bought into the hype more and more.

I figured out about 3 years ago that the pre-season is meaningless. Then last year I saw the "emergence" or James Jones and the August struggles of Greg Jennings (many articles speculated Jennings might by the 3) and I dropped Jennings to pick up Jones. I knew better, and did it anyway.

Anyhow, this is a reminder to myself and all interested that if you've got your rankings in your head and if you have a pretty good feel about your personal opinions of each player, you'd be better off avoiding football information like the plague for the next month than buying into every bit of camp hype and rumor.

In fact, other than injuries and official starting lineup changes (Pennington/Clemens, etc), I'm of the opinion that nothing else meaningful will come out of training camp/preseason games.

I'm glad football is here, but in some ways, August is the most frustrating, annoying month of the year.

I understand your point but sometimes there's a little truth as well. You just have to take things with a grain of salt. There was hype about Adrian Peterson last year too and those that bought into it drafted a heck of a running back.I can't say I had a single team with ADP on it, I didn't buy into the hype and I didn't get ADP. So you're going to have stories that are smoke and you're going to have stories that have some meat to it. You have to trust your sources.

This really applies to ALL players. Not just rookies, or previously unheralded players.I've seen in some papers a lot of misinformation or one sided reporting about some players. Rather humorous. It comes down to "trust your eyes" not what people print.

I drafted ADP last year. Not out of hype but having watched him play at OU. So i understand the sight opinion but i dont have that luxury with every player.

Thats the hardest part of it all. Picking and choosing the right info. What information or facts do you look at to make an informed opinion. I know targets are helpful, RZ targets are also helpful. what other information have you all out there found to be rather trusted facts to look thru the hype. I have heard other people say to pay attention to the what the coaches say about players but how do you look know its coachspeak or truth???

I drafted Petersen last year because I've watched him for years in college and I knew he was going to be awesome. I don't recall his practices changing that one iota.In fact, I'll use Mcfadden as an example. I'm of the opinion that he's just as talented as ADP. He's going to be unbelievable. Not much I see over the next month will change that.

What the coaches say about the players is the last thing to pay attention to, imo. It's coachspeak 24/7. My two teams in pro and college have great coaches (Jeff Fisher and Nick Saban), but their press conferences are snooze-fests and I have no desire to listen. Nothing of value will be learned.

:goodposting: I am fully on board with this idea, but I find myself so addicted that I almost cant stop myself from coming here.

Why on earth would you drop Jennings for Jones?

I saw the same hype, and my thoughts were "target Jones late, he might get a shot in a year or two"

Couldn't agree more. I think it's important to watch as much of preseason as possible. You can read all day that so and so caught 6 balls for 100 yards and a score. But try to pay attention to his route running, separation (this is moreso replay stuff). Is the RB dancing and getting lucky? Or is he exploding into a non-existent hole, coming out for 7 yards? For goodness sake, is he picking up the Blitz?! You can usually see if a QB looks confused in pre-season. If he does...avoid. If he does not, well not necessarily target. Over throwing/underthrowing? What kind of velocity? Obviously, you're not going to stop and look for these things from Moss, Tomlinson or Brady. But, fringe guys that you're not so sure about, this information really helps you get a better grasp of them.

I'm dying to see Bryant Johnson in preseason.

Drop Jennings instead of who?Mine was target them both late(Jennings 8th round). Jennings was coming off an injury season and Jones was lighting it up in camp like Jennings did the year before. I like hype that gives me cheaper layers. If Jennings was hurt again(or Driver) Jones would have been huge.
