Transforming a Keeper into a Dynasty (1 Viewer)

My 12 team, 6-man keeper league is nearing the end of its third year and some owners have begun to talk about transitioning into a dynasty league. There's at least mild interest from all teams, but before any decisions can be made details need to be hammered out. We've gotten a rules committee together to try to outline the transition. But with no previous participants in a dynasty league its tough to be sure we covered all the bases.

I was curious how many of you have turned a keeper into dynasty and how it worked out? Any noticeable negative aspects? I ask because it seems like the better teams are the ones pushing dynasty (including me) and I fear the weaker teams may fall even farther behind. Competitive balance is what we strive for year in and year out and I could see this further distancing the rich from the poor. As commissioner I want to make sure I have all the info I need to present an outline of this potentially giant change to the league.

So far we've considered:

- Making 2007 a transition year, with 2008 beginning the dynasty

- Expanding the rosters from 20 to 25. (And when should the rosters expand? 07 or 08?

- Start 2 QBs instead of one

- A rookie only draft with a weighted lottery for non-playoff teams

- Salary Cap (Do we need one?)

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Why not simply toss all the players back and begin anew? I realize the rich teams never like to lose any talent they've managed to hoard but if you did it once surely you can do it again.

1) Start from scratch.

or

2) Keep 6 like you have, and throw the rest into a pool to draft from.

or

3) Keep 1-2 and disgard the rest into the pool.

Depends what the majority of the league wants.

OK, I'm going to ask what may be a stupid question, but here it goes, anyways. What is a dynasty league and what's the difference between that and a keeper league? I always thought they were the same or similar, though I've never really paid much attention either way since I've never been involved in either one, obviously.

The oversimplified version:In a dynasty league, every player acquired remains on your squad year after year until you cut or trade him. In a keeper league there is a set number of players kept each year from your roster.

It sounds like the FF draft would lose alot of it's value and fun in a dynasty since most starters (thus most good players) would already be rostered in a dynasty league. That's always been my argument against not making our league a keeper league and that was only 2-player keeper where the top 24 players are already rostered before starting the draft.

One of the goals of a dynasty league is to build a team that is not only good for one year, but for many years i.e dynasty. In tems of player movement, Dynasty leagues normally have a college draft sometime between the real NFL draft and the start of the NFL season with many leagues allowing waiver wire pick up and trading throughout the off season or at least in portions of it. Also, many dynasty leagues have some form of free agency in order to force some player movement even if mostly the bottom say 1/3 of a roster. It is year around football verus Labor Day to Thanksgiving (well Christmas for the eventual champion). All that is to say that there is not a "FF draft" in the same sense that there is in a redraft or keeper.

no one wants to start over, thats not even an option. maybe this is a bad idea?

I would say that is a good thing, because in the situations I have seen that has been the area of the most division. Seems like you guys would need to keep 6 this year since that is how the league was drafted (I assume). The 2007 draft should be with the understanding that it is moving to a dynasty league at that point. During this off-season, you need to hammer out your rules and any details of the 2007 draft that will be diferent than your previous. There is a penned thread by GregR which outlines things that should be in your rules.

Another option is to make it a "creeping" dynasty league. Just add 1-3 keepers every year til you get to where you want the roster limit to be.
