I like Derrick Harmon as a prospect, but I really don't think DL was anywhere near that big a need
20. LA Chargers
I like Omarion Hampton, though I question whether that was a good use of resources. He's better than Najee at least. I'm not a Harris guy at all, I think he's a raw route runner and isn't as explosive as his highlights suggest. Basically Johnston but behind in development. Kennard is a nice 3rd EDGE. I think Caldwell was a wasted pick, just don't think he's more than mediocre depth.
I mentioned Kennard, I said I thought he'd be a good 3rd EDGE.20. LA Chargers

I disagree with C-. My take:
1 (22) - RB Hampton - Worst case scenario draft board for Chargers, with only 1 QB, 5 OL, and 1 RB going and LB Campbell not going before the Chargers pick. Hampton was their last player with a first round grade, so they took him when technical issues reportedly prevented a trade down from being completed with the Eagles. Ideally, I would not have wanted a RB here, but I understand it, given the situation. And the fact is, he fits the identity Harbaugh wants for this team.
You appear to give the Chargers a poor grade for Hampton without regard to the context. Disagree. I give this pick an A.
2 (55) - WR Harris - Should play mostly behind Williams (if/when healthy) this season but poised to be long term X WR. Excels against man coverage, which was a weakness for the Chargers except for Ladd last season; there came a point where opponents recognized this, and it was tough on Herbert. Williams and Harris will help overcome this challenge.
I understand your points on Harris, but I think he is better than you are giving him credit for. Not great, just saying I think he is a solid pick for this team given this team's needs. I give this pick a B-.
3 (86) - IDL Caldwell - Great pick given Chargers' needs and given they waited this long for IDL.
Completely disagree with your take on Caldwell. IMO he is the most talented IDL player on the Chargers right now and thus represents a quality upgrade. I give this pick a B.
4 (125) - Edge Kennard - Great pick given Chargers' needs and given they waited this long for Edge.
You didn't mention Kennard, who was a great value pick here. I give this pick an A-.
5 (158) - WR Lambert-Smith - Surprising pick that doesn't really make sense to me. Not sure he will make the final roster. I have seen it suggested that he was grossly underrated, but I'm not counting on it.
I give this pick a D.
5 (165) - TE Gadsden - When they traded up, I was certain it was to draft G Frazier and was disappointed to see it was for Gadsden. They do need a passing game TE of the future. I'm skeptical Gadsden is it and don't like the pick. My pick would have been Frazier.
I give this pick a C.
6 (199) - G Taylor - Will convert from tackle to guard, but seems like a reach to me. I assume he will make the final roster as the 9th OL since the team apparently likes him, and we know how much they value OL and specifically OTs playing across the OL. But I think he will generally be inactive on gameday unless due to injury. Hortiz and Harbaugh must have seen something in him they really liked, and they know OL.
I give this pick a D.
6 (214) - S R.J. Mickens - Great pick at this point in the draft.
I give this pick a B+.
7 (254) - CB Bridges - Looks like a reach but really just a priority UDFA at this point of the draft.
I give this pick a C. I mean it's almost Mr. Irrelevant, how hard should we grade it?
My issues with this draft are with drafting Lambert-Smith, Taylor, and, to a lesser degree, Gadsden. But they were 5th and 6th round picks. Expectations should not be particularly high in the first place.
I would probably give this draft a B.
I like Derrick Harmon as a prospect, but I really don't think DL was anywhere near that big a need
Not arguing the grade, but respectfully...you're wrong about the highlighted.
Their DL is aging, thin, and very recently was seen surrendering about a bajillion rushing yards to anyone willing to just dare them to stop the run (which they couldn't do).
Their run defense has been on fumes for 5 years. It degraded a good deal when Hargraves left and cratered fully after Alualu injured his way out of town. They havent addressed DL early since they drafted Heyward, and none of their mid rounders have panned. DeMarvin Leal is a dead body walking. Lowdermilk/Lowry/Lee arent really NFL caliber contributors. Ogunjobi sucked and was cut. Benton looked okay as a rookie, but last year regressed.
I could go on, but won't. QB is a massive concern for them, but with this suspect class "Kenny Picketting" it again wasnt going to cut it. Shoring up their DL before Heyward decays into dust was/is incredibly important.
Great write up, agree with some of your analysis20. LA Chargers

I think the Steelers should have taken a shot with Sanders in the 4th. He was good value there, and that kind of draft capital wouldn't have prevented them from signing a QB or drafting one in the future.
Damn you're a tough grader! I do hate when sites give out nothing but As and Bs, but this seems an EXTREME over correction.C-
19. Philadelphia
Jihaad Campbell could pair with Baun as the best LB combo in the NFL. I also think Makuba could potentially start at FS, despite his size. I think Cameron Williams is an interesting OT project.
20. LA Chargers

21. Denver
Barron was a great pick, he and Surtain could end up being the best CB duo in the NFL. After that though...RJ Harvey strikes me as a good 3rd down/COP RB. Not a difference maker. Pat Bryant is a big nothing pick to me. Be shocked if he was ever a top-3 WR.
22. Cincinnati
I can live with the Stewart pick, though I'm not a big fan of traits guys who had no production. I liked the Knight pick in round 2, he's older sure, but he's gonna be a solid starter for years to come. Fairchild going on day 2 made my head hurt, I thought he was Georgia's worst OL. I doubt he wins a starting job even on a needy OL.
D
23. San Francisco
I think SF was right identifying their holes, but I think made some bad picks. Williams was a big reach in my mind. I get that's where a toolsy 20-year-old starter from Georgia goes, but I don't have to like it, because I think he's a project.I like West slightly more than Collins at DT but probably would have switched the order and taken DT then EDGE given their neediness. 1 great DT (Nolen? Grant?) would help more than 2 ok ones. I literally didn't know who Martin or Stout were.
24. Houston
I'm fine with where Higgins and Noel went, I just think taking both was overkill. WR is deep for them at least with Metchie suddenly on the roster bubble. Ersery was a reach in my opinion, despite being a 23-year-old I think he's a bit raw. Thought trading down from #25 was a bad call, missing out on the Joshes at OT. Felt OL was a much bigger need than WR. I don't see Smith as anything more than a ST guy.
25. Jacksonville
I think Travis Hunter was the best player in this class. Huge fan of the guy. But man, they gave up a lot, including next year's #1. Probably wouldn't be so bad, but I'm not sure they got much else. I think Ransaw is a ST guy, and Milum feels like a utility OL. Based on interviews with GM/HC it sounds like Hunter will be a full time WR who plays some CB. I think the reverse would be more helpful, but whatever.
26. Pittsburgh
I like Derrick Harmon as a prospect, but I really don't think DL was anywhere near that big a need. QB/RB/OL/CB were all much bigger. Kaleb Johnson likely slips right into Najee's role as lead RB who gives up touches to Warren. Might have preferred Hampton in round 1, and DL (West?) in round 3. I think Jack Sawyer is a nice depth piece, but its not like that was an issue, with Herbig around. Feels like OL/CB are just gonna continue being issues. I'm assuming Rodgers shows up, but if not, this is the worst QB room in the NFL.
D-
27. Miami
I like Kenneth Grant, and DT was a big need, maybe not the ideal pick, but not bad at all. I'm not a Savaainaea guy. I think he's more a utility OL. That's better than Eichenberg sure, but that doesn't make it a good pick. I like Jordan Phillips as a rotational DT. Run D should at least be fixed. Ignoring Safety was a choice given they arguably are the worst team in the NFL there. Secondary could be a massive issue if they deal Ramsey, though maybe that's not happening anymore.
28. Detroit
This was setting up as a boring meat and potatoes draft and then it went off the rails. I think Tyleik Williams is a good prospect, maybe not 1st round good, but solid starter good. I find Tate Ratledge is fine, but not sure he's a starter as a rookie. I liked Mahogany, and didn't think OL was a pressing need. TeSlaa was just burning a pick in my opinion. Not a fan of combine warriors with no production on day 2. Doubt he even challenges Raymond or Patrick. Very surprised they didn't touch EDGE, with Hitch coming off an ACL and Davenport currently pegged as the other starter.
F
29. New Orleans
I like Kelvin Banks, though I do wonder if he sticks at LT, they needed OL help badly. Broughton is an ok round 3 pick as a rotational DL, again a big need. Jonas Sanker made no sense to me at all, both how high he went, and NO taking a Safety when its their strongest position on the team. I don't get Tyler Shough at all. I thought he was a huge reach, and I think they'll regret passing on better QB prospects (especially Sanders, not to sound like Kiper) he's old, he's fragile, he plays scared. I would have rather gone with Rattler/vet if Carr is out all year, and reassessed next year if they weren't going Sanders, or at least even Milroe.
30. Green Bay
Matthew Golden was absolutely the right pick if they weren't going DL. I think he'll have little trouble ascending to #1 WR on what I feel is a pretty overrated WR room. After that they may as well have just gone home, except since the draft was in GB they already were. Belton was a huge reach in my eyes as a developmental OT in round 2 doesn't help much right now. Savion Williams feels like burning a pick. They don't need a returner, they don't need a gadget guy. Where's he playing? CB/DL got ignored despite being needs. They desperately need Wyatt and Van Ness to play to their draft positions. Little reason to think that happens. What's Alexander's status?
31. LA Rams
I like that they got the Falcons 1st rounder next year. I think less of Ferguson than I do of Taylor at TE. Rams also just gave Parkinson a big deal and still have Higbee. Josiah Stewart makes for a solid 3rd EDGE, and I think Chris Paul is at least a top ST guy, and maybe a potential starter at LB, given how little talent they have there. But yeah, this team didn't get much of anything helping this year. Under addressed LB need and ignored CB issue.
32. Minnesota
Always was gonna be toward the bottom given the lack of picks, but oof. Donovan Jackson is a good (but not great) prospect with solid versatility, an ok 1st rounder. I literally don't think another player makes an impact. Also would have gone CB or J. Campbell in round 1, as there were better players at bigger needs in my opinion. Or traded out of round 1. They couldn't have gotten as much or more than the Texans or Rams got
I believe in curve grading. Therefore, if there are 32 teams, 16th is a C. I think it makes more sense grading the drafts against each other, not just "did this team get better?" Because its basically impossible to get worse.D

PFF this year gave 3 teams a grade lower than a B... you gave 22 teams a grade lower than a B!
Is there a reason for this? Seems crazy to me giving 53% or the NFL teams a C or lower grade.
