Trent Edwards starting week 7 (1 Viewer)

Trying to pick up Parrish just because of this. Trent looked like he really favored him, tho I don't have target numbers handy.

Edwards hasn't done anything special, but he has looked good out there having pocket presence and making the throws in face of pressure.

His overall numbers aren't too shabby either.

I think just like any back-up QB, he has more reps with Parrish, just like Cutler/marshall last year. First 2 games this year, Walker was most targeted.

With the bye week, I wont be surprised if Evans got more looks this week against McAllister-less Ravens.

Edwards hasn't done anything special so far...I don't see why people like him.
He's only a rookie. He hasn't looked much worse than Cutler, Leinart, or Eli did in their first season. Even Peyton Manning himself wasn't an instant star. In his first year Peyton completed 56.7% of his passes with more INTs than TDs, a yards per attempt average of 6.5, and a QB rating of 71.2. Right now Edwards is completing 69.6% of his passes with a yards per attempt average of 6.4 and a QB rating of 75.2. I think it's a little unfair to say he "hasn't done anything special." Merely looking mediocre is an accomplishment for most rookie QBs. A lot of people are being short-sighted with their analysis of Edwards. While it's entirely possible that he'll flame out and regress to Kyle Orton status, there's also a chance that he'll improve dramatically over the next 1-2 years and develop into a franchise caliber QB. He's hardly a finished product, so I'm not sure why so many people seem to think he needs to be playing like a Pro Bowler in the first few months of his NFL career. Also, NFL teams generally know their own players better than we do. So while this move may seem surprising and stupid to us, that doesn't mean it's the wrong move. Remember the outpouring of vitriol on these boards when the Jags named Garrard their starter and cut Leftwich? Hard to argue with that move in hindsight. People called the Browns clueless idiots when they benched and traded Frye after one week. That also worked out well. These teams see their players in practice every day. They don't always make the right personnel decisions, but they're smarter than they're usually given credit for.

While Edwards stats may not be much better than Losman's stats right now, his composure appears to be head & shoulders above Losman's already. Losman always seems to be panicky & tends to ad-lib too much.

I think the Bill's brass, especially Levy, is pushing this move because they don't have faith in Losman.

If Edwards finishes the year with a decent showing, I predict Losman will be traded this summer.

Trent Edwards-QB-Bills Oct. 18 - 12:54 pm et

The Buffalo News believes the Bills' installation of Trent Edwards at quarterback is likely a long-term manuever.

The Bills reportedly believe Edwards can be their quarterback of the future and will have to "fail miserably" to be replaced by J.P. Losman in the second half of the season. There's a good chance Losman will be moved in the offseason if Edwards can maintain the starting job through Week 17.

Until Fairchild realizes he was mentored by Mike Martz and calls some ####### plays, niether Edwards or Losman won't look special.

Agreed. I will go further and say that the game Fairchild WANTS to call is the reason Edwards is being looked at here. Losman's game is the long ball, and improv. If Losman fails in Buffalo it will be, IMO, the classic failure of designing the system for the coaches and not the players.

Chris McAllister is OUT for the game, and the Baltimore corners behind him all suck. So this may not be a bad matchup for the Buffalo passing game.

Apparently Losman has some type of incentive in his contract this year that bumps his pay up a decent amount next year if he reaches it. So there's talk that Ralph Wilson made the decision in order to make Losman more tradeable this offseason.

Not to highjack but what about Balt passing versus Buffalo? Is Mark Clayton FINALLY going to get a chance to do something this week?

Grove- isn't JP a FA after this year? That bump in salary was for a new contract I thought.

I don't believe he is. I think it's the following year.

He's scheduled to make $650,000.00 in 2008 right now. I read that the number just about doubles if he meets the incentives. I think I read it at PFT.Edit: It looks like I did read it at PFT but that the incentives thing was pure speculation on their part.
And though we don't have many (any) details about his incentives package, we suspect that his $1.8 million base salary that drops to $650,000 next season will shoot up if he were to meet certain triggers based on playing time and/or performance.Leaving Losman on the bench will keep that from happening, and will make Losman's contract more attractive on the trade market.

I think we have a JP owner. Edwards was rated by FFToday's Matt Waldman as the second best QB in this years draft, ahead of Quinn. Dudes for real and will take time to adjust to the game, the Bills got a steal when they drafted him.
