Trivia (1 Viewer)

Sanders is the guy I'm thinking of.

I was interested to see if there were any others. It's hard to imagine everything working together.

1. Rookie impact, not to mention just starting

2. No injuries

3. Leaving while on top of his game

How many players are in the running for this? LT comes to mind, 5 years so far.

Not including last year's crop of rookies. Clinton Portis & LT are the only two I believe.

Jim Brown? Or did he play less than 10?
Missed his rookie year and one mid-career year:

Sanders is the only guy who did this. From NFL.com, here are the records for consecutive 1,000 yard rushing seasons:

Most Seasons, 1,000 or More Yards Rushing

11 Emmitt Smith, Dallas, 1991-2001

10 Walter Payton, Chicago, 1976-1981, 1983-86

Barry Sanders, Detroit, 1989-1998

Curtis Martin, New England, 1995-97; N.Y. Jets, 1998-2004

8 Franco Harris, Pittsburgh, 1972, 1974-79, 1983

Tony Dorsett, Dallas, 1977-81, 1983-85

Thurman Thomas, Buffalo, 1989-96

Jerome Bettis, L.A. Rams, 1993-94; Pittsburgh, 1996-2001
Smith, Payton, and Martin all had non-1,000 yard seasons and no one else has ever put up more than 8 years in a row.

All right, I've got a free minute, let's dig in...

To have 1,000 for 10 means you have to have a career minimum 10,000 yards...that cuts the list to the following players:Corey Dillon

Eddie George

Curtis Martin

Marshall Faulk

Jerome Bettis

Ricky Watters

Emmitt Smith

Barry Sanders

Thurman Thomas

Eric Dickerson

Marcus Allen

Ottis Anderson

Tony Dorsett

Walter Payton

Franco Harris

John Riggins

O.J. Simpson

The following guys from that list have less than 10 years with over 1,000 yards rushing...Corey Dillon - 7 over, 2 under

Eddie George - 7 over, 2 under

Marshall Faulk - 7 over, 5 under

Jerome Bettis - 8 over, 5 under

Ricky Watters - 7 over, 3 under

Thurman Thomas - 8 over, 5 under

Eric Dickerson - 7 over, 5 under

Marcus Allen - 3 over, 13 under

Ottis Anderson - 6 over, 9 under

Tony Dorsett - 8 over, 4 under

Franco Harris - 8 over, 5 under

John Riggins - 5 over, 9 under

O.J. Simpson - 5 over, 6 under

One player had 10 seasons with over 1,000 rushing yards but they were not consecutive...Walter Payton - 10 over, 3 under

One player had 11 consecutive years with over 1,000 rushing yards, but he didn't get rolling until his second year and has some slow ones at the end...Emmitt Smith - 11 over, 4 under

The only other player to start his career with 10 consecutive seasons over 1,000 yards rushing is Curtis Martin...but in his 11th (2005) he came up short...Curtis Martin - 10 over, 1 under

And only one guy, the guy who ducked out rather than fade away, earned 1,000 yards rushing every season of his 10 years...Barry Sanders - 10 over, 0 under

   This is why I come here. Great stuff. Some may consider this a meaningless stat, and it isn't near the most important, but it shows consistent greatness. Imagine getting Barry as a rookie and not worrying about the position again for 10 years.

Imagine not having to worry about the position for 10 years and still disregard putting a better team around that position.

Let me rephrase: Imagine a competent owner / GM / head coach getting Barry as a rookie and not worrying about the position again for 10 years.

The irony of that is some of those great runs were because he was on a bad team and had to get it done himself. Heh. I do miss watching him run.
