Troy Brown playing CB (1 Viewer)

After the Reggie Bush jersey # debacle, what's with Troy Brown wearing #80 and playing CB? Is he technically a WR but he plays CB? I didn't even know he was a corner until this weekend, but apparently he was playing corner last year as well.

If that is the case couldn't Bush technically be a punter/kicker/QB but play RB?

Where does the NFL draw the line?

What do you want the guy to do? Change jerseys after each change of possession?

If the NFL dictates that certain positions have to have certain #s, then yes. If the NFL does not care, then why not let Bush have #5?Where is the consistency? Either you need to wear a # that reflects your position or you do not.

So many players fill-in in other slots it would be a non-stop game of changing jerseys. DL play FB or TE. DB play WR or vice versa. Once in a while someone will play OL and DL or LB. OL play TE at the goalline. I think the league mostly cares about a guy's PRIMARY position and number.

Uhhh Bush doesn't play two positions. Is a LB who goes in as a TE on the goal line supposed to change shirts? Or maybe a tackle who has been declared an eligible receiver? Be realistic.

Interesting. I always thought the NFL's rule on this was black and white with no grey. Why can't Bush primarily be a 3rd string QB and play RB? How does the NFL determine what is a primary position?

Position designation on the team's official roster maybe?

But Bush could play two positions. He made some nice throws out of the halfback option at USC. Or he could punt.If there is as much grey as everyone is saying regarding jersey #, then why even have the rule and allow Bush to wear #5??

Maybe. If I was Bush's PR agent I would have had the Saints designate him as backup punter. He could then have #5.I am going to e-mail the Saints front office with this suggestion...does anyone know what e-mail that might be?

Okay...but he DOESN'T. He's not a punter that plays RB or a backup QB who goes in the slot sometimes...he's a RB that plays RB. Where is the grey area?

Maybe this is one of Belichick's ways of manipulating NFL rules to his benefit... he hopes the opposing QB will see a guy wearing #80 and throw him the ball.

IIRC, the league has a set allotment of numbers based on position. So a team can assign certain numbers to people based on where they play. They do seem to have changed the numbering scheme, as there are now WR in the teens and twenties for numbers (which is a new trend that I don't recall seeing in the past).Clearly Bush has never been a QB, so giving him the number of a QB would mandate an exception that they did not want to grant. Theoretically, if a defender went to try to tackle Bush and saw a low number he might not go full bore because there are some different rules that pertain to hitting QB but not other positions.

Yeah having Brown out there gives us a HUGE edge. :wall:
It might. If I was a QB and saw #80 I may throw to him if I was about to be sacked, forgetting what color jersey I wear.
Maybe Aaron Brooks. Maybe. But I was referring to the fact that Troy Brown is not a particularly good CB.

For all the "noob" high number FBGs who get crap from all the "expert" low number guys...:boxing:Just having fun with ya Bagger.

I'd hope that #5 get's him a lot of extra endorsement money if he did this, because he'll get a rude awakening in a few years when he starts getting franchised as a punter at a million bucks and a bag of chips per.Oh, and well played, bagger. :fishing:
