True Detective: Tom went in to listen to the Cardinals game...in November. Mmmmmhmmmm... (1 Viewer)

Seems like they lifted the story from West Memphis 3
45 mins into episode one and I thought it was just a retelling of that story.

Through two, I’m definitely on board. Love the vibe, great acting, and so far the dialogue has been pretty decent. I’m not sure why the reviews are just ok unless pizzalotto pissed off a bunch of people in the press. I thought it was well done so far.

Oh and saw the previews for next week -It would be great to be the spray paint vendor for this series  💰- looks like we have some more places covered in spray paint writing to sift through

After reading reviews it seems most of the negativity comes from having a similar setting to season 1. If that’s the only proble, that’s good with me. I like the setting. If Fargo wants to do every season in that region, I’d be good with continued murder mysteries in the rural south.

Really enjoyed the first two episodes.  Still holding out hope that Titty McBlueEyes or one of her cousins makes a cameo.

So we got the following mysteries so far:

  • Who killed Will?
  • Who "kidnapped" Julie?
  • Where has Julie been from 1980 to 1990?
  • What happened between Julie and her father?
  • Who was wrongfully convicted?
  • Did the cousin drill the hole in the closet?
  • What did those dolls mean?

That rural scary hick atmosphere is the best character in the show. Leaving it in season 2 was completely ridiculous.

What’s the Julie and her father part?  You mean questioning who the father actually is that the grandparents mentioned or something else?

Sounds like mom is a whooah.

In 2015, they mentioned something happening between Julie and her father a few times.

Definitely tinges of that so far.  I feel like the show is pointing us pretty strongly towards the uncle, and my assumption is that the teenagers are wrongly implicated. Remember one of them finds the bike and is playing with it in Devil's Den.

2015 Hays telling himself to "not make any mistakes this late in the game" and that he's trying to find out what the producers know is an interesting breadcrumb. My dumb theory is that, in 1990, Hays finds Julie and makes the choice to let her go back into the wind and keep it under his hat.

This show's better. Ali is really acting is ### off in here, also Saulnier's a pretty well-acclaimed director. He made the Green Room a few years ago, which was pretty awesome.

Been listening to The Flat Circle podcast, its really good. They review right after an episode is played. I agree with quite a few of their theories regarding this season.

Got my wife to watch - and she likes it too.  So much that I got her to watch Season 1 (we have only watched the first episode - I've seen it, but will enjoy it the 2nd time around).

I’m in. Great so far. Only complaint is a little too much time jumping. Gets a little disorienting and distracting.

Nothing?

Last night was pretty good. I’m curious how the wife’s book plays into all this in the end / does Wayne have to besmirch her name to solve the case or did it contain a detail all these years later that he needed to solve everything?  Seeing the father in 1990 brings an interesting dynamic as well where he’s found religion and stopped drinking.

caught up on the last two episodes last night... as a result, my answer to almost anything today has been "mmm-hmm" in my best attempt at a Purple voice.

I keep hearing how great of hunter he is yet we haven’t really seen it. Hope we get a good payoff or a Vietnam Flashback of him tracking someone down.

I agree.  Time for some nitty gritty-way to many loose things just hanging out there.
Curious if you thought that about season 1?  I went back and rewatched all 8 last week and this season actually has a quicker pace than that season. Through 3 episodes in season 1, we basically just found burned down churches with drawings and tree ornaments in them.

Last night's was good enough. Nothing fantastic, but, fine. Could use some tying up of loose ends sooner rather than later.
I've kind of felt like this was the hallmark of the True Detective franchise.. piling up loose ends.  First season made it work, last season not so much.

Already way better than season 2 IMO. Great acting by Ali. Dorff doing a good job too. Season 1 will probably always be unbeatable, but enjoying this so far.

What the heck did Indian guy grab from his house in the green duffle bag? Almost looked like a body but then thought maybe guns?

A little on Season one although the wait & the payoff was tremendous!

Thanks for reminding me.  I'm just a little antzy right now.  Patience-patience.

Guns grenades etc was my thought. He’s going Scorched Earth policy for revenge IMO.

Great aftershow episode on The Flat Circle this week. These guys dig deep into all these “loose ends”

Check it out: The Flat Circle podcast. Highly recommended

This has been my weekly follow up for TD season 3. They do a real nice job.

In episode 1, 1990 Hays said something along the lines of "And you all know what happened with him" in regards to them searching garbage guy's house so yeah something definitely does happen.
