TV Shows you don't get (1 Viewer)

Friends is perfect for this thread imo. Huge smash hit show, but at its core it was a formulaic ensemble sitcom. Then once it got that huge it became way too cute and self-aware. I think it was as frequently annoying as it was funny.
Yeah Friends is terrible.  I still can't believe that no talent ### clown David Schwimmer made a fortune on that show.  Ross is easily a top 5 most annoying character ever on a sit com.  I wish they made that more realistic like in real life Ross wouldn't had a prayer with Rachel yet a major story line was her putting up with that dorks jealous bull####...come on.

I never understood the love for Entourage. Piven was the only decent character on that show.

90% of the show's greatness was Steve Carell. The more Jim & Pam progressed in their relationship, the more the show suffered. Ditto the new characters -- without exception every new cast member starting with Andy was a net negative. But Michael was up there with any other character in sitcom history imo. Every gut-busting laugh was a Michael line or a play on something he did or said.
At some point in Season 3, 4, 5...Michael became a complete cartoon character. I liked the show until one week I said "That would/could never happen" vs Seinfeld where I literally would say to my wife, "I had a Seinfeld moment today", it's one of the major reasons that show took off. The ability to take what seemed like average people who thought they largely lived a good life and were decent people when in fact they were awful and not honest with themselves about who they truly were...ring any bells for some folks?

Yes.  Not funny and kind of a writer's cop out.  Then they add the jerky camera for effect and it all comes across as trying way too hard.  On top of that, the stuff I have seen is completely absurd in an office setting so I can't relate.

BTW, Office Space(movie) and Silicon Valley are two of my favorite comedies.  Somehow Mike Judge knows how to make work humor more realistically absurd and it's hilarious.
Completely agree and along with the staring into the camera all the time to emphasze a point drove me nuts.

Yeah Friends was pretty crappy.

People say this a lot, but I rarely noticed it, much less ever felt like it was used for comedic effect. But I thought the show was hilarious from the start. People who complain about the camerawork probably also dislike the awkward humor.
Quirky camera >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> laugh tracks.

Never got the love for most mainstream comedies - from Cheers, to Everybody Loves Raymond to Moden Family/How I Met Your Mother/Big Bang Theory.

Wasn't looking to debate the merits.....I was just trying to figure out why you didn't like the show since I have never run into anyone that didn't like Cheers.
Cheers was my favorite show ever. Still DVR it and watch it often.

But in those days I was in the ranks of evangelical christianity... and in that twisted circle of society, god forbid anyone ever watch Cheers, let alone actually like it. It promotes drinking. GASP!!!

Big Bang.  Watched it once on a plane.  Did not smile, let alone laugh, once.

The Good Wife.  One of the most overrated dramas in the history of television.  An atrocious "legal" show written without any attempt to understand (a) the law or (b) Chicago, its setting, and as time went on Julianna Margulies' main character became completely and utterly loathsome (as did her real-life behind-the-scenes behavior).  Created and largely written by a pair of complete hacks.  But lasted for seven freaking seasons on CBS.

Really? They've had some great shows. Of course, they may not hold up decades later, but All in the Family, Andy Griffith, Raymond, King of Queens, The Honeymooners, Lucy, Good Times......the list can get pretty long for CBS IMO.
I Love Lucy alone should put CBS on any list of networks who had great comedy sitcoms/shows.

Right, I think you kind of made my point for me.

If GoT was just more run of the mill LotR fantasy stuff (which is the point someone was making that I was responding to) then as a fan of exactly that, you would probably love it.  And as someone that is not really a big fan of that, I probably wouldn't (same with 17seconds, above).  Instead, the opposite is true, because GoT is a very different beast from typical run of the mill LotR stuff.  It's not just super powerful clear cut good guys beating up on mindless evil bad guys.  The show is mostly political machinations of morally grey characters playing the long game, with long stretches where there is no true hero at all.  The fantasy aspect is talked about a lot, but what percentage of scenes actually have any fantasy element to them in action?  I would guess less than 1%, including neither of the major scenes that really put the show on the map.
I definitely did not make your point for you.  I didn't expect LotR stuff at all.  I don't mind political stories.  I mind that no one is even vaguely likeable.  And they are all psychopaths as far as I can tell.  No one would survive long enough to reproduce in that world.

All I get out of it is that George Martin couldn't get a girl in high school.

Two drunk girls.  I mean, two slutty girls.  I mean...two broke girls.
I tried to watch this once just to stare at Kat Dennings and found it offensively bad. The writing was on par with a tween sitcom from Nickelodeon or whatever. I was actually surprised what a poor quality show it was on every level, given that it's made it for multiple seasons.

Seinfeld. Just never liked any of the characters, especially Jerry Seinfeld. He has always rubbed me the wrong way.
Yeah, all the characters were hateful.  There's wasn't a redeeming quality among the 4 main characters.  The best episode was the last one where they all got thrown in jail basically for the crime of being horrible, horrible people.

- and that's why I loved it

none of that folksy, gee whiz #### that permeated so many other shows.

to each their own, and Seinfeld is in my 'Elite Eight' of all-time, but I can see where you're coming from.

first of all, the Piven scenes alone are enough to make that show the GOAT.  throw in the partying with hot naked women and the occasional Drama one-liner and you've got an all timer.

yea YEAAAAAAA.  yea YEAAA. YEA.

Yep.  To each their own.

It was very funny at times, I'll give it that.   But I do prefer shows where the characters grow and evolve. I like it when I care about the characters.  I wanted nothing more than to see each one of them hit by a bus.  :P

Family Guy.

I can watch if nothing better is on, but for me, it doesn't hold a candle to The Simpsons or South Park.

Several episodes. My wife was really into it and I caught a bunch with her.

Don't get me started on the final episode.....good lord, that was dumb.
Someone needs to let your wife know that she has a wife.

How much did you end up getting through?  I told you to keep watching.  If you watched the whole series and still found it slow and dull then maybe you should consult with a doctor.
I did watch the whole series of Breaking Bad. I kept waiting for it to pick up. Eventually I felt like I might as well finish it. I consoled myself by laughing at how stupid the characters all were. Everyone knows the drug trade is basically a pyramid scheme. You have to be atop a large distribution network to make money at it. The idea that a genius chemist would think that was a good plan to make quick, easy money to support his family once cancer killed him is absurd. The idea that each time it nearly killed him and his partner and they were still broke, he would just try again is also idiotic. It was like watching a sitcom without jokes or a laugh track. Or humor.

For me, "Breaking Bad" is a lot like steak: I like it just fine, but I don't like it as much as everyone else seems to.

"Two and a Half Men" was a top-rated comedy for several years, and I really tried to give it a shot, but I always thought it was terribly stupid.

Now here is where I set myself up for abuse. I've never enjoyed even a single moment of "Always Sunny in Philadelphia." Sorry. I'll go hide under the table in the fetal position now.

Entourage was good, but I liked Californication way better.
