While I agree that Aldo is likely the p4p best fighter in the world, I actually think that Mendes is likely a much tougher fight for McGregor, even given short notice. Mendes via UD by takedowns / top control IMO. Wrestling is typically a huge weakness of non-Russian Europeans until they spend a few years in a top camp getting it up to speed, and the way that the UFC has matched up McGregor screams that they've been protecting the new cash cow to get him to the huge payday with Aldo. Guess we'll see.

Conor has 8" of reach on Chad with a strong jab. That is going to the be the game changer. I don't think Conor can hang with Chad for 5 rounds either. He will look to do damage early and often.

It'll be interesting for sure. Mendes hung in with Aldo standup-wise in their last fight, and IMO can also knock McGregor out cleanly if he catches him -- particularly if he can get McGregor's hands down to defend the shot.

I definitely might be underestimating McGregor -- he's walked right through some legit fighters, but I just see a world of difference between the "solid" Siver / Poirier tier and the big time studs out of Alpha Male and Nova Uniao. Until I see McGregor hang with an elite grappler that's going to be a massive question mark for me. We'll know soon enough.

That was an insane fight. 95% of the time the ref steps in in that situation. Great comeback.

I think Usman is chosen to fight for a 3rd time vs Hadar with everything on the line.

Yep crazy fight. Glad it's come down to the last one for all the marbles. If I had to peg it, I'd say that ref had some instructions to have a super long leash with Graves. But with the nutshot, fence grab, and hitting the back of the head....I think it worked out the way it should have.

Also found it hilarious during the house clips that the BZ fighter was denying grabbing the cage multiple times during his fight. That's the real shady kind of fence grabbing too, it was blatently on purpose and not a reactionary move. ATT dudes are like go watch the tape and report back.

I swear you used to see people 'cage walk' (on their back, trying to sweep, grab the chain links with their toes and walk their feet up to then try to buck or flip the guy on top) all the time and the refs never did anything. Now it seems like the past 6-12 months referees are all NO GRABBING THE FENCE WITH YOUR FEET.

Which, is completely his prerogative, but absolutely hurts his marketability, which by proxy hurts his earning power.

Not a chance. Those are his reported purse and bonus winnings, but don't included PPV share #s nor endorsements. By my quick math, since jones won the title, he has main-evented in UFC PPVs that have a cumulative 4.6m buyrate. At ~$3 per, that’s roughly $15M, and remember prior to him turning into a coke sniffing DUI-ing hit-n-run cool guy he had deals with gatorade and nike.

so that $3.6M is very likely a lot closer to $20M. Still not boxing money but nothing to shake a stick at either. Boxing PPVs still crush MMA on a butyrate comparison. UFC has had only 3 events ever break 1M buys, and it’s a rare event when boxing sees less than 700K buys. The UFC has had 13 PPV events sell less than 250k in the past 3 years, including a miserable 4 in a row (UFC177—>180 sold 125k, 205k, 180k, 185k). the highest UFC gate in history didn’t top $7M. boxing has had 19 events in the last 20 years that have done better than $10M at the gate, and Money/Paq pulled a $72M gate.

So yeah, there are a lot more events now. But as people in this thread have complained about, they feel a lot more watered down and people clearly are not as interested as they used to be. Perhaps the year-end tallies are working out for them but on a per-event basis are clearly in decline.

I've noticed this also.I thought attempting to sweep from the bottom by using the fence with the toes was allowed; guess not.

I don't know if dying is the right word but I think it is significantly less popular in recent years than it has been in our country's history.

I don't think one should judge the health of a sport on one single big event that occurs every couple of years but more on how the average event does.

many many people who aren't fans of boxing regularly say that boxing is a dying sport....boxing was only down for a while because of the promoters screwing things up...greed has a way of destroying everything...now we are seeing a resurgence in boxing with more fighters with great talent getting public mainstream attention with the free boxing cards on major networks...its all ebb and flow...its rising again ...and yes ,boxings PPV`s are HUGE compared to MMA`s ...it just is was it is

i dont know without looking it up...feel free and get back to me...like i aid MMA is pretty popular right now ...although i see a decline in its popularity lately...the problem is the best fighters are still on showtime and HBO for the most part...im guessing they have gret numbers ...the free boxing on NBC and spike are growing in popularity...like the days when wide world of sports would televise guys like Hagler and boom boom mancini in tremendous fights ...get back to me after the summer when we get to see even better free cards ...but ill promise you this ...when Canelo fights Cotto the numbers will beat any ufc numbers to date

What does a non-Maywether or Pac ppv draw? What about TV ratings?

i dont know without looking it up...feel free and get back to me...like i aid MMA is pretty popular right now ...although i see a decline in its popularity lately...the problem is the best fighters are still on showtime and HBO for the most part...im guessing they have gret numbers ...the free boxing on NBC and spike are growing in popularity...like the days when wide world of sports would televise guys like Hagler and boom boom mancini in tremendous fights ...get back to me after the summer when we get to see even better free cards ...but ill promise you this ...when Canelo fights Cotto the numbers will beat any ufc numbers to date

for the life of me, i will never understand why people feel the need to make it MMA vs. boxing. I remember when they had MMA vs. Pro Wrestling in the beginning too. Weird how no other sports need to do this.

i am a fan of both, but MMA has surpassed boxing in terms of popularity for awhile. We can discuss PPV numbers, but looking at exposure through sports media or general entertainment MMA has surpassed boxing for some time. Looking at late night shows people like Rousey and McGreggor are on all the time. Mayweather and Paq can get to that level of mainstream exposure, but no one else in boxing can break that kind of exposure. Sponsorships with the UFC, as much as people want to disect them, put the UFC at a higher level too.

I am glad boxing got a bump from the Paq-Mayweather fight, but i don't see it sustaining. the free cards on Spike debuted great, then the next week i think had half the previous ratings and it keeps going down. It is a shame, but boxing doesn't have a unified voice like the UFC to push it correctly. i just think it will be back to niche until it can get better organized and promoted correctly

I still think it is a mistake to look at one rare event and extrapolate that for a whole sport.

We are a big event based country when it comes to viewing tendencies.

The Womens World Cup fina tomorrow is predicted to draw between 18-20 million viewers. No one in their right mind would call women's soccer popular even though those viewing numbers for the one event say that it is.

Similar to horse racing, 22 million people watched the Belmont Stakes but I think we all know that does not define the popularity of horse racing.

I believe what defines the true base of popularity of a sport is what it does day in and day out with attendance and tv ratings, not what it does when it has the rare big event.

its a discussion thats been around for a while...good -bad -right or wrong...being a lifelong boxing fan and having boxed years ago i get defensive when people say its a dying sport...that wasn't said here in this discussion ...i brought it up ...just trying to make a point...i enjoy MMA almost as much as boxing...its a combat sport and i respect it immensely...Dana White is a promoting genius ...im hoping as the don kings and bob arums of the boxing world fade away and guys like Oscar De la hoya start taking over things will get better for boxing...MMA has been the new kid on the block for some years now ...but the old guy on the block is still around and making noise

I am not sure where the only 3 were greater than $1m stat came from either. The stats I listed above show 7 above a million and another one right at a million.

The source I used could easily be wrong though.

I can go dig for the list I was using but it's not tremendously different. Change my statement from

"UFC has had only 3 events ever break 1M buys"

to

"UFC has had only 2 events ever break 1.07M buys"

the numbers may be a hair off but the point remains.

Not a huge punishment really. He's fought less than 2 fights/year (1 fight every 7-8 months) the past 5 years (8). Does look like he tried to sneak in another fight quick against Al Iaquinta next weekend. (now off card obviously)
