so looking for any opinions on this. My nephew is getting into ju jitsu pretty good and i want to get him something for xmas for it, but not sure what. I don't know about t-shirt or anything, but for you guys who train, etc., what would be a cool gift for a kid who has been doing it for about a year. I know hygiene doesn't excite him, but i was thinking something that way. But also like being the cool Uncle, so any of you in the know please share

also, what is the best ju jitsu magazine out there. I know the MMA one's, and was thinkin Fighters Only subscription, but he is more just into ju jitsu for now, and likes to keep up with what i going on (also asked for a Flo grappling subscription if that helps to think). I can't figure out why the kid isn't in to Muay Thai more and MMA as a whole, but he seems to be slowly getting there

also is that Flo grappling subscription a good deal? i didn;t know if fight pass would be better since UFC seems to have a lot other promotions on last time i heard.

so any ideas would be helpful, hard trying to stay the cool uncle, but this is totally in my wheelhouse so i feel like it has to be top notch

Do you know who is favorite fighter is? Maybe get a shirt from their gym for him. If he’s a Diaz fan, get a Represent Ju Jitsu shirt, etc.

I don't know if Defense Soap really works, but my instructor swears by it, and I use it too. Anecdotally, we've combined for three cases of ringworm in the last six years. Of course, we probably clean ourselves and our gear far better than the teenagers and dudes in their 20s, so the success due to the soap is unclear.

Under Armour makes some really cool looking compression shirts. If he also wears compression pants, there are combos that look awesome. Make sure there aren't any color restrictions at his gym. Some places only allow black or blue or whatever.

UFC's Fight Pass does include all of the Eddie Bravo Invitationals, which is a nogi, sub-only tournament.

If you want to be the really cool uncle, get him a Hayabusa gi. Again, check on any possible color restrictions.

not sure if this should go here, or in the Wagering Thread, but here it is:

going to my first UFC event this weekend in Fresno, and am looking to do a little DFS to keep things "interesting" throughout the night. for the record, i know absolutely zero about MMA/UFC, so a few questions:

- is there an advantage of one style over another, e.g. Jujitsu vs Ground and Pound?
- experience vs youth: young guys kicking more ash than older guys?
- looking at this card, any standouts that should be on my roster for the night? any underdogs that have a decent shot?

one underdog that stands out is Alexis Davis. i'm not sure why Carmouche is favored

silly they start these cards so late. how do you showcase these guys if you have 3 fights left and it 11:20 EST?

i get the UFC doesn't really care anymore. i guess the Fox contract is up soon, will be interesting what deal they get next. seems UFC isn't too concerned or looking to work with Fox much more, that Alvarez-Gaethje would have been a perfect main event for this upcoming Fox card

Seems OK to me.  Have you checked your clocks?

seeing DC in those MetroPCS commercials doesn't make me want to buy their phone. Rather see Jones come out of the hallway and head kick DC back out the front door

Hick Diaz biting the hand/finger  :lmao: . glad they docked a point and didn't just ignore, though not sure if it was that deliberate

ETA: nope, on replay he looked like he meant to bite him. lol

jesus  Benitez almost threw away a wonderful tactical fight in which he was extremely disciplined, in that last second where he almost got caught in the heel hook.

This has been bugging for a while but...

Why, when there are two fighters who are obviously of different ethnic/racial backgrounds, do the announcers still have to say “Chad Slomoski in the grey trunks, Charles Jefferson in the blue trunks.”?

There is nothing racist about saying “Skiylehr Miller is the white guy, Miguel Perez is the Hispanic guy”.

Tonight was pretty fun. Had seats on the floor about 5 rows back, and ended up sitting w a bunch of fighters. Sadly, it was lost on me since I don’t really follow UFC.

Surprised at how the medical staff treated Sterling: he was out before he hit the ground, and didn’t move for at least 45 seconds. Then, they call for the backboard and don’t bother to C Spine him. Seems like they could have taken better care getting him out of the ring. Hope he’s alright.

Didn't even realize Erick Silva was fighting tonight, and he's already disappointing. He actually seems like the fresher fighter going into round 3, for a change, but still can't make it happen.

Erick is way too confident in his ability to make something happen from the bottom. Dude smartly bounced back up in round one when he was taken down, but kept going for sweeps and armlocks afterwards and it cost him the fight. So dumb.

Lawler clearly had something wrong with his left leg for around half that fight.  Very apparent towards the end of the 4th and the entire 5th.  RDA was peppering the lead right leg all fight IIRC.  So this injury may not have been caused by damage from RDA.  Might have happened during a scramble from what I remember the announcers and Lawler's corner saying.  The only thing I read post fight is that Lawler would not make any excuses.  Commendable, but if you got an ACL or something like that, just say so, it's not an excuse.

Gabbi Garci, who is fighting a 53 year old (53 year old weighed in at 162#).   Gabbi missed weigh by TWENTY SEVEN ####### POUNDS (scaled at 236#, contracted at 209#).

I don't recall anyone missing weight by this much ever.    Even 2013 Rumble Johnson is looking at her saying "Damn #####, put the cupcakes down".

The speculation on twitter is that it was all a work and they were never going to fight anyway. Regardless, Garcia should be fighting his own gender.

UFC 219 looks fine, but that's about it. Not much of a year-end card. Really only care about Cyborg/Holm, Barboza/Nurmagomedov (omg omg omg let's go Junior) and Condit's return against Magny. Got some other fun fighters in there too, but would be hard to justify buying the PPV.

For as much as I respect Khaaaaaabib's grind game I hope he gets waxed tonight.  I think I'll like him a lot better once he gets knocked down a few pegs.

Khabib's got all the hype and the UFC has to be eyeing that Khabib/Ferguson match, but I really think Barboza can take it. His striking is beautiful to watch, and though Nurmagomedov is relentless, I do think Barboza can keep it standing long enough to get the W. (I hope, at least.)

yeah hoping as well. I like that Edson has been training with Eddie and Frankie for awhile, i am sure he has plenty of wrestlers being thrown at him that are comparable to Khabib. Khabib also didn't look that great in his return fight against Horcher, and Michael Johnson played into his game. it has been a year since Khabib fought, so wouldn't be surprised if he either starts slow or has a hard time keeping pace all fight

if Barbosa does win tonight, i am not sure who can beat him. If Khabib is on his game and Barbosa can withstand those takedowns, Edson could be champ for awhile, the wrestling is his only kryptonite i think
