Ultimate Survivor - Leg 1 - League 3 (1 Viewer)

Here I go looking back at my team:

Pos Name Team ---Bye--- Salary---

QB Matt Schaub Texans (HOU) ---8--- 7---

QB Jon Kitna Lions (DET) ---4--- 5---

QB JaMarcus Russell Raiders (OAK) ---5--- 2---

I went into the Auction wanting to get 3 mid level QBs. Schaub has a tough opening schedule, but I still think he has potential to not get completely shut down in all of those games. Kitna was cheap and has good weapons around him. If playing from behind he can score some points. I had no interest in Russell, but I wanted three and with Kitna week 4 bye it became more imperative. At the point I got Russell there was not much left to choose from for QBs. I feel ok about my QBs, but I need at least one of them to step up each week to do well. I feel they are good compared to the price I paid.

Pos Name Team ---Bye--- Salary---

RB Steven Jackson Rams (STL) ---5--- 57---

RB Marshawn Lynch Bills (BUF) ---6--- 46---

RB Selvin Young Broncos (DEN) ---8--- 15---

RB Ryan Torain Broncos (DEN) ---8--- 3---

RB Darren Sproles Chargers (SDG) ---9--- 1---

RB Michael Pittman Broncos (DEN) ---8--- 1---

Part of me feels like I overspent for my top 2, but the other part of me feels like that's the price you pay if you want those two. I really blew my budget on those two, but I wanted strong RBs and by the time Lynch came up these second tier guys were starting to run thin. I was hoping Lynch would be a little cheaper, but Rymer was high on him as well. I was happy to get Young at not too high a price. I wasn't planning on cornering the Denver RB market going in, but once I had Young and pickings got slim I thought if I could get them cheaply it wouldn't be a bad move with the way Shanny plays musical RBs in preseason. Sproles was a filler who plays on a good offense and has potential to play and score. Only one bye week in there so I'm hoping that won't hurt too much. Obviously this is the strength of my team and I need them to play big for me like they're supposed to in order to have a shot. I am happy with this group.

Pos Name Team ---Bye--- Salary---

WR Terrell Owens Cowboys (DAL) ---10--- 38---

WR Jabar Gaffney Patriots (NWE) ---4--- 4---

WR Darrell Jackson Broncos (DEN) ---8--- 4---

WR Muhsin Muhammad Panthers (CAR) ---9--- 3---

WR Demetrius Williams Ravens (BAL) ---10--- 2---

WR Kevin Walter Texans (HOU) ---8--- 2---

WR Amani Toomer Giants (NYG) ---4--- 2---

The first player nominated was Terrell Owens. I wanted either him or Moss. Since he was the first up I didn't have a gauge to know where Moss would fall so I went for it. If I would have known Moss would only cost $2 more I would have tried to get Moss, but I'm happy with Owens. As far as the rest of the group I really need some luck for these guys to come together and get me some scoring. My WRs suffered the most from my spending on my big name guys, but I still feel like there is potential for these guys to put in some decent performances. If I could change one thing I would get rid of Williams. There many other options I could have instead of him and I feel, barring an injury, he's has the least upside in the first 5 weeks to produce much. Overall I am cautiously optimistic about this group. On any week that Owens fails to produce for me, I could be in big trouble. If he drops out of my top 3 WRs on any given week I will not be doing well.

Pos Name Team ---Bye--- Salary---

TE Donald Lee Packers (GNB) ---8--- 1---

TE Ben Utecht Bengals (CIN) ---8--- 1---

Budget constraints led me to these two. I was happy to get Lee for $1 and Utecht plays on a good offense so I am hoping these guys can at least give me somewhere between TE10 to TE17 performance. There were other guys I wanted, but my hands were tied. For the money they are decent, but nothing reliable. No bye weeks so I got two chances each week.

Pos Name Team ---Bye--- Salary---

K Shayne Graham Bengals (CIN) ---8--- 3---

K Matt Stover Ravens (BAL) ---10--- 1---

Don't want to spend too much time talking about kickers. These guys are viable and don't have bye weeks so that's good for me.

Pos Name Team ---Bye--- Salary---

DEF Denver Broncos Broncos (DEN) ---8--- 1---

DEF Cincinnati Bengals Bengals (CIN) ---8--- 1---

These teams aren't high on the rankings, but they both have good SOS to start the season and neither has an early bye week. Since Defenses are hard to predict I am happy with these and hope they do all right. I felt a lot of people were overpaying for defenses and I wasn't going to reach to get them.

Overall I feel like I am somewhere in the middle of the pack. I think I had a mediocre draft, but we'll have to see in Week 6 how I did.

I have to say it was a very competitive auction with all the knowledgeable folks involved and win or lose for me it was a valuable experience for my future auctions.

I feel you have one of the stronger teams in this league, but my main problem with it is T.O.... I love T.O., but you really hurt your WR depth by grabbing him. I would have went for a couple guys at $19 each rather than just Owens for $38.Overall good job

Palmer at $12 was a great deal if they can hold it together in Cinci. Very solid draft for you FM.

Psycho's had a nice draft. Had I not overpaid for Colston, I think I might have went a little further for Lynch. Nice work overall though.

Overall I am very happy with the results for my first try at an auction. I felt like I stuck with my draft plan and only overspent on one player. Thankfully I made up for it in another area. I would appreciate any feedback as well.
Congratulations on your first auction. I think you did outstanding. We certainly stepped on each other's toes a few times. I like your team to move on in this thing. But, I'm not much for that kind of predicting. For a first time auctioning I have to give you  Renesauz also. I'm pretty sure this was his first live auction and his team looks outstanding to me.

Thanks alot. I think we had the same line of thought on a few guys. I probably should not have been so locked in on Colston though. It was a great learning experience and I think I will definitely look into doing some more of these. I really enjoyed the whole draft. I tried to do my homework and be prepared with my targets, but I think I need to dig a little deaper into the strategy side of nominations and whatnot. Thanks again. I appreciate the feedback.

Before going over my team I want to thank David and Joe and FBGs for setting this up and including me. What a fun contest. Having read a bunch of Dodds' stuff on auctions I was excited to bid against him. He was kind of creepy laying in the weeds with the biggest bank for so long. I bet he'd approach this a little more aggressively on a do over, but I also think he's sold on the Bin Laden approach to watching his opponents bleed themselves financially in order to defeat them. Maurile was the opposite. He was loading his roster so fast early in the auction it was also a little creepy. I wondered if he ever had a credit line before the way he chewed through it. This league was advertised as a particularly tough one, and I suspect we dispatched of an owner and one of his respected staff members rather quickly here.

Good job guys!

There's been some good debates around here in the past about different approaches to auctions. Some argue for letting value come to you and having an open mind to any combination of rosters. Others prefer a more rigid targeting of specific priority player combinations. I fall into the "target roster" camp. It's why I love auctions. No one can draft a player out from under me. I can specifically focus on my preferred studs and sleepers.

So let's look at how that went for me.

QB Matt Hasselbeck Seahawks (SEA) ---4--- 8---

QB Matt Leinart Cardinals (ARI) ---7--- 4---

QB Troy Smith Ravens (BAL) ---10--- 1---

McNabb was my targeted #1 (as in other best ball survivor type leagues so far) and Leinart/Warner was my planned #2ab. That didn't work. Rodgers was a priority back up plan but he went before McNabb for money I wanted to hold on to. Hasselbeck went at a time when the QB pool was very thin and I was sweating not being able to afford him. At $8 I was happy to have the position almost solved. Immediately after winning Leinart, I had to take a business call and do a little note taking for work. Warner was gone before I knew he was nominated. I was bummed to see that and had to fish for any QB who might play week 4 in case Leinart wasn't with Hasselbeck on bye. Troy Smith was the only player who qualified, so I added him very late for $1s worth of insurance. Meh, I was one of the last ones completing a roster. I would have been thrilled with Trent Edwards here, but he cost too much at that point. It's not quite what I planned, but I feel okay with it for 5 weeks. Hass is a top 10 guy and Leinart has explosive targets and a chance at some shootouts.

RB Adrian Peterson Vikings (MIN) ---8--- 67---

RB Willie Parker Steelers (PIT) ---6--- 19---

RB Rudi Johnson Bengals (CIN) ---8--- 16---

RB Chris Johnson Titans (TEN) ---6--- 5---

RB Dominic Rhodes Colts (IND) ---4--- 1---

RB Sammy Morris Patriots (NWE) ---4--- 1---

I had two scenarios targeted for my RBs. One with AD and one without. I placed his value at $70, and did not expect to win him. I did a little endzone celebration at $67. I think this stallion dominates early. I prefer him to LT for the first 5 weeks. We'll see. Rudi and Willie were part of both plans and I think both are undervalued. Mendenhall is going to come along slower and this is just five weeks. I'm also believing Rudi has a resurgence as long as he's at full strength. I would have liked adding F Taylor to this but missed by a buck. I am happy to have Johnson who intrigues me more than any rookie RB. I think Reggie Bush may be a poor man's Chris Johnson. ;) Rhodes and Morris were just nice little finds as the auction circled the drain. Their week 4 byes don't bother me considering their expected utility, but either could show up big for me in those offenses. I'm giddy to have Peterson... happy with these RBs. Pretty much hit the target scenario dead center at prices I expected. In non-ppr this group makes me confident.

WR Chad Johnson Bengals (CIN) ---8--- 25---

WR Lee Evans Bills (BUF) ---6--- 15---

WR Donald Driver Packers (GNB) ---8--- 11---

WR Marvin Harrison Colts (IND) ---4--- 11---

WR Jacoby Jones Texans (HOU) ---8--- 1---

WR James Jones Packers (GNB) ---8--- 1---

WR Devin Thomas Redskins (WAS) ---10--- 1---

I had a rather extensive spreadsheet set up for a couple wr scenarios with many contingencies covered but nowhere on this long list does Lee Evans appear. The $15 bid was just an attempt to drive his price. Oops. :) It happens. I hope it works out. I like T Edwards more than most and his schedule is friendly. Go Bills. I wanted Colston but Rymer went to war for him. I wanted Marshall, but he would have exhausted my funds too soon. Rymer is pretty much dead to me now. This sounds like a mess, but I like what I see here. That spreadsheet helped. Chad is going cheap, imo because of the antics, but he'll play at a high level to prove his point. Harrison is similar. I don't expect a huge separation between Wayne, Harrison, Housh and Chad and I got by far the cheapest of the four. $11 for Harrison could be one of this auctions biggest bargains. He's coming to camp at full speed, and has fallen into that old vet WR category a little too soon, imo. Old vet wrs are gold anyway, and Harrison could set the standard. I expect Driver to be Rodgers' go to guy and Jennings and Jones to split receptions like last year with Jones actually closing the gap some in the TD department. I'm happy about this group. I think it almost epitomizes July auction value, with players being cast aside too soon for the wrong reasons. Evans is an expensive bonus. You don't like it at first glance, but if you think about it...

TE Alge Crumpler Titans (TEN) ---6--- 4---

TE Dustin Keller Jets (NYJ) ---5--- 1---

K Nick Folk Cowboys (DAL) ---10--- 3---

K Robbie Gould Bears (CHI) ---8--- 1---

DEF Pittsburgh Steelers Steelers (PIT) ---6--- 2---

DEF Buffalo Bills Bills (BUF) ---6--- 2---

Crumpler is a target TE of mine. In this scoring I have two approaches to TEs. Step up for a top player or pick a couple sleepers and live with it. Peterson pretty much left me in the sleeper category. I'm not concerned. I wanted Folk for some reason and dropped an extra buck for him. Gould was just tossing a dart at the kickers. I hate kickers. I'm an IDP guy who won two defenses.

Good luck everybody. And thanks to the whole group for making the auction about as smooth as it gets at Auctioneer.

For future reference I used an old PC (2.66 P4, 256mb) with a Linux OS and Firefox. It was rock solid. If you have a tired old bogged down windows machine taking up space, consider wiping the hd and installing a Linux OS for free. Mine is faster online than my much more powerful Windows PC and great for audio video stuff on the internets. I needed the other PC for business during the auction. Linux/Firefox was the best ride I have had at Fantasy Auctioneer. Sorry to those of you who had the typical issues. I hope it didn't mess up your roster. I got what I deserved in this auction. I'll see three of you in six weeks. :excited:

I generally think there is more value in a third QB or third Defense in this format than a ninth WR -- but I just wasn't happy with my WR corps so I kept adding more scrub WRs at the end.

Pos Name Team Bye Salary

QB Ben Roethlisberger Steelers (PIT) 6 18

QB David Garrard Jaguars (JAC) 7 15

I like both of these QBs. I worry a bit about Garrard's durability. Even though I would have liked a third QB, I'm satisfied with my roster here.

RB Jamal Lewis Browns (CLE) 5 29

RB Earnest Graham Buccaneers (TAM) 10 25

RB Edgerrin James Cardinals (ARI) 7 23

RB Ahmad Bradshaw Giants (NYG) 4 4

RB Jacob Hester Chargers (SDG) 9 1

No superstars, but Jamal is capable of putting up a few huge weeks. I'm higher on Graham than most are this season. And Edge should give me a baseline of points every week in case Lewis or Graham tank. I like Hester in this format for a dollar. He's got good upside if LT gets hurt -- but more than that, I believe he'll be on the field in goal line packages and could get well over a dollar's worth of touchdowns. I'd never start Hester in a regular league (if LT is healthy) because you never know which weeks he's going to score, but in this format you don't have to guess.

WR Roy Williams Lions (DET) 4 18

WR Roddy White Falcons (ATL) 7 16

WR Joey Galloway Buccaneers (TAM) 10 12

WR Isaac Bruce 49ers (SFO) 9 7

WR Antwaan Randle El Redskins (WAS) 10 1

WR Craig Davis Chargers (SDG) 9 1

WR David Patten Saints (NOR) 9 1

WR Dennis Northcutt Jaguars (JAC) 7 1

WR Troy Williamson Jaguars (JAC) 7 1

I like my first four WRs, but you really need more than four good WRs in this format. Unfortunately, everyone after my first four is kind of junky. I'm hoping quantity will make up for lack of quality. My last five WRs each have some big play potential; hopefully each will have one or two big games. Preferably all in different weeks.

TE Dallas Clark Colts (IND) 4 8

TE Zach Miller Raiders (OAK) 5 3

Meh.

K Adam Vinatieri Colts (IND) 4 3

K Phil Dawson Browns (CLE) 5 1

Kickers.

DEF San Diego Chargers Chargers (SDG) 9 11

DEF Oakland Raiders Raiders (OAK) 5 1

Between these two defenses I get four games against the Chiefs.

That was unusual for me. I'm usually not very active early in auctions . . . but guys I liked kept getting nominated and they weren't getting bid up past my max prices for them.

This was my first live auction (that counted for anything), and I went into it armed with only a slightly adjusted DD produced cheatsheet and a firm commitment not to chase players. Based on the few mocks I've done, I felt the top RB's would draw too much money, especially for a best ball format. The only plan I came into the auction with was to pass on the top RB's, BUT try to get four NFL starters (thus letting the best ball aspect work for me). I felt that by passing on these top guys, I would then be able to LOAD UP on second tier players and other positions, and thus dominate in this format. (Knowing full well this strategy would be a ticket to mediocrity in any other format). As part of this plan, I had also planned to pick up 2 of 3 in either extra kicker/TE/Def, again thinking of the format.

Pos Name Team ---Bye--- Salary---

QB Peyton Manning Colts (IND) ---4--- 35---

QB Alex Smith 49ers (SFO) ---9--- 3---

QB Jeff Garcia Buccaneers (TAM) ---10--- 3---

Anyway, my plan took a hit early with Manning. Brady had already gone for 45, and Romo had gone for 35 also. I had bid primarily to force Manning's numbers up into the mid 30's area. I think I had hit the +1 button, and bid a couple dollars higher on Manning then I planned to. And won the bid when I didn't really want to spend that kind of money. Although I regretted the lost capital, I realized that Manning is never hurt, and generally consistant, so at least I could try to recover some of that cash with a cheap backup. (I might not have wanted him, but $35 was not what I'd consider a bad figure.) I had only planned to get 1 backup, but couldn't let Garcia go for just $2. Led by Manning, with 2 backups, this should be one of the better QB corps in a format that is generous to QB's.

RB Reggie Bush Saints (NOR) ---9--- 26---

RB Matt Forte Bears (CHI) ---8--- 14---

RB DeAngelo Williams Panthers (CAR) ---9--- 7---

RB Warrick Dunn Buccaneers (TAM) ---10--- 3---

RB Brandon Jackson Packers (GNB) ---8--- 2---

Before Manning, most of the RB's taken were top tier backs, and all at prices well above what I wanted to spend. After getting stuck with Manning, I felt it even more important to get proper value on the second tier RB's. BUT...the second tier guys were still going for $40 plus, and had I taken 2 of them (as I planned), my draft would be effectively over. I made bids on almost all of the RB's ranked between 6-20, but only Bush fell to me at what I thought was appropriate value. Later in the draft, I regretted not beng more aggressive, as it became obvious that I'd need some luck to have 4 starters. Still, I think Jackson will surprise, Dunn will be heavily involved, and both Forte and Williams will at the worst be a part of significant RBBC's, and should be the primary ballcarriers during at least the first few weeks of the season. (I realize these are hardly universal assumptions.) Rb's are my weakness, but I think they'll do just enough not to kill me.

WR Reggie Wayne Colts (IND) ---4--- 35---

WR Anquan Boldin Cardinals (ARI) ---7--- 17---

WR Derrick Mason Ravens (BAL) ---10--- 6---

WR Bernard Berrian Vikings (MIN) ---8--- 6---

WR Ronald Curry Raiders (OAK) ---5--- 3---

WR D.J. Hackett Panthers (CAR) ---9--- 2---

WR Eric Parker Chargers (SDG) ---9--- 2---

I had wanted at least one studly WR, and was fairly aggressive for Wayne. In hindsight, I wish I had backed off, but I don't feel the price unreasonable. I felt like Boldin was a steal. I had capped myself at 20 for him, and was honestly surprised to get him at 17. I was happy to pick up Mason/Berrian/Curry/Hackett at those prices. At that point in the draft, most guys were getting low on funds, and I felt that four or five guys together in that area would produce wonderfully for a WR3/flex.

TE Kellen Winslow Browns (CLE) ---5--- 13---

TE Owen Daniels Texans (HOU) ---8--- 8---

TE L.J. Smith Eagles (PHI) ---7--- 3---

Te's were generally undervalued in this draft. Winslow went fairly early, and I felt I got away with highway robbery to pick up what could be the top TE for only $13. Later, when Daniels went on the board, I already knew I was screwed at RB, and figured Te was an area I could dominate. I think most will agree that this is likely the top TE corps in the league (assuming Winslow stays healthy).

K Nate Kaeding Chargers (SDG) ---9--- 4---

K David Akers Eagles (PHI) ---7--- 1---

DEF Arizona Cardinals Cardinals (ARI) ---7--- 4---

DEF Washington Redskins Redskins (WAS) ---10--- 3---

I had wanted at least one extra in here, but the extra QB took away that option. I do think Kaeding/Akers will prove to be one of the better scoring K combos, but that just makes up for a below average DST combo. (I only took Washington because of schedule.)

In the end, I think that my QB's, TE's, and WR's should more then make up for my RB's, as long as those RB's are as involved in their teams gameplans as I expect. In a normal lineup lleague, my team would lack the firepower to seriously compete for a title. But in a best ball league, I feel this team has an excellant chance to land in the top 4 and move on.

I don't undertstand how you can prefer Peterson over Tomlinson with those matchups?
All Day :excited: I don't see anything significant in those schedules. Peterson averaged 6.8 a carry against GB. Denver has stuffed LT many times. Indy, Car, and NO are all being played on very fast surfaces for Peterson. Tomlinson sees artificial turf once in the first five games. @Ten will be tough, but it also sets up for a serious battle of ground games. Peterson just needs a gap or two regardless of defense.

As long as Peterson is healthy, I prefer him regardless of schedule in non-ppr. I project record setting numbers for him in his 2nd year and expect it to start in the first quarter of week 1. My only concern is breakdowns, not SoS. He's the type of talent that allows me to disregard SoS. As is LT, btw. I did qualify the comment with "we'll see". I adjusted Peterson's value to 70 and LT's to 68 before the auction.

:headbang:

Summary:

Getting Westy and Brees was a dream.

Then my computer froze and I screamed.

A.I. got me Housh and Witten,

For 50 bucks my cap had been bitten

Now my 4 kickers must carry my team!

I tried to log into the site, but could not get in. I know they've had some issues, but is there somewhere we can log in to see the site once the season starts?

Bump ... How do we get in and access our teams? Am I the only one in the dark here? The site we used to draft was just that ... to draft, right? What about lineup, waivers, standings and such. What are we doing here?

Well it's best ball, so we don't have to worry about lineup's and waivers. But I would definitely like to be able to follow the progress on gameday and see the standings.

Hmm. Dodds waited forever to spend money. Too long, IMO. He's deep, but deep with mediocre players. I would have liked to see a little more elite talent there.

So that's what it feels like to actually lose. Sure all it took was a 5 TD week from Ronnie Brown to beat me, but I think we all know that's sustainable each week.

I just need to make it through one more week. I'm not missing anyone on byes, which should help. Chaos Commish has no QB next week and is missing a few guys due to byes.

Missed moving on by less than 12 points. Tie for record, lose points tie-breaker by less than 12 points.

If you're wondering where the board handle came from, you now have your answer.

UGH...I knew week four would be a down week because of byes, but was hoping not to be quite that far down. No QB and Wayne on bye hurt a ton. Very few TD's anywhere on the squad hurt even more.

But I'm still in third currently, and get Manning/Wayne back this week. Just added to the week five excitement. :hophead:

We play for 5 weeks. You are still alive.
HOORAY!Sorry, with so many leagues, I can't remember the rules for all of them.

anyone with access to the site able to post up yesterday's results. stuck at work and can't see the site. :coffee:

From what I saw midday though, it looks like I am holding on for dear life.

Dude...you had already clinched coming into the week. To not make it you would have had to go 0-11 while Unlucky and Psychos would have to go 11-0 and 10-1 and rene would have to go 5-3 v. everyone else.David Dodds (99.3 pts)Denver90 (106.0 pts)eric rymer (76.5 pts)footballman_696969 (129.3 pts)Maurile Tremblay (125.2 pts)renesauz (125.0 pts)Shipshewana Psychos (82.7 pts)Sweeper (99.7 pts)Unlucky (128.5 pts)wikkidpissah (96.9 pts)Worm (71.8 pts)Chaos Commish (78.2 pts)

Thanks for posting that up. I tend to expect the worst (happens alot). Glad it turned out good enough to move one. I'm anxious to see what the next leg is.

Here's my breakdown on the last two spots:

renesauz: 28-16-0 with 476.5 points coming into the week. 125 points so far with B. Berrian to play tonight.

Shipshewana Psychos: 25-19-0 with 467.2 points coming into the week. 82.7 with no players left tonight.

Unlucky: 25-19-0 with 456.8 points coming into the week. 128.5 with no players left tonight.

Denver90: 22-22-0. 106 this week with Brees, but already had Warner score 21, so he'll need 45+ from Brees tonight to have any chance of gaining enough ground.

Chaos Commish: 22-22-0. 78.2 this week with Peterson tonight so he'll need 50 or so points from Peterson to gain enough ground.

So, I'd say that renesauz and I have the last two spots fairly well locked up.
