Even though we're not full yet, I figured I'd start off the thread.

One quick question - do kick return TDs count for the individual? I'm assuming no but figured I'd make sure and ask.

Also I suggest "The Old School Classic" as the informal league name given the basic scoring.

Should be a fun one though hopefully the picture won't be like this:

FBGs ------> :wub: <---- Joe B

Look forward to the draft.

I'm looking forward to the challenge even though I feel like a little fishy in the shark tank.

I have not played a TD only league for about 20 years.

I have NEVER played in a survivor league so I am completely new to this. I better head off to the AC forum to get some help on how to handle this format.

Bump with the addition of LHUCKS completing our league.

Fortunately I have a fair amount of experience picking from the 12th spot (thanks in large part to FBG  )

Hey Guys,

Look forward to drafting with you guys. I have a good pick, NO. 5 right behind Joe B which is good because I expect plenty of players to slide to me picking behind him *smiles*

This is probably posted in other places and I didn't run into it but when logging into our league site, is there are password?

there should be a password for your team in the e-mail Clayton sent you.Go to log in on our league page, select your team, then type in the password from the e-mail.-QG

My commute home takes an hour or so so it's a bit tough for an earlier time, though I will check in once I am home. I don't think I'll be home earlier than 8:30 in any circumstance and wouldn't want to chance committing to the earlier time before I know for sure when I'm home (jersey traffic = no fun)

we are now the fast draft champs i think!

2 hours and 50 minutes

good luck all

Btw, I think league definitely is a study in the effect that scoring rules can have (look at where the D's went and you'll see what I mean)

The draft was a great time last night and the scoring rules made it a very non-typical draft. I know I decided to have fun with it and take a completely different approach such as drafting 2QB in the first 4 rounds. A defense in round 6 and in round 8!

It looks like a few owners looked at the scoring and realized how some positions were higher scoring than others and then tried to compe up with a plan to take advatnage of it (satch taking 5 defenses). It will be interesting to find out what works and what didn't.

Bottom line is I think everyone had fun with it. Thanks for putting this on FBG!

I'd like to say thanks to Joe B. and David D. for putting this event on as well as thanking Clayton for reminding all of us slackers when/where and the rules over and over.

I haven't been in a TD only league in a LONG time, and I really found it interesting. What made this format unique besides just being a TD only league which just throws most of your normal ADP out the window, is that this league is only 5 weeks long, really hurting the value of guys with 4 and 5 bye week. You definately saw many of the guys you'd normally think would go high slip a little because of the 4 and 5 bye week.

With that said, my first two selections and the weakness of my team have week 4 bye weeks. Drafting in the 5 slot, I went into the draft thinking Marion Barber would be mine. He went 3rd and knew that my next two players I liked, Randy Moss and T. Brady both had week 4 bye weeks. Joe B (drafting in front of me) stayed clear and took Westy (I was a little surprised at that pick, but he'll now probably ave. 2 tds a week to start) and I said I'm going to just go with Brady and roll with it. If he starts off anything like last year, he'll carry me until week 4 anyway.

So, the draft goes up and down and as you could imagine, it was RB heavy with bye weeks a huge consideration. It got back to me and Reggie Wayne (who I have 3rd as WR) was still on the board, so I nabbed him. Great start right.....well, I might have the most Td's for the first 3 weeks and look like a powerhouse, but right now (I'm thinking this in my head), I don't have a player who's going to be playing in Week 4. Good job Cowboy, pick some more players who won't be playing in week 4....take some Giants or some Seahawks why don't you.

Anyway, right then and there I knew I wasn't going to take another player on a week 4 bye week. I tried throughtout the draft to look at offensive to defensive matchups, hoping that I'd catch fire in a bottle for that week, knowing I'd need someone to step up with Brady/Wayne on the bench for that week. I also knew I'd need a solid QB for that week 4.

Well, I looked at the week 4 matchups and my rankings. One player stood out to me, and that was Derek Anderson who that week (week 4) is playing Cincinnatti. You remember those games last year right.....fantasy heaven. I said I'm going to pull the trigger on this guy, and hopefully put a little squeeze on some guys hoping to lay off QB's early.

Let me backtrack just a bit. In round 1, I picked Tom Brady but Warhog and Duff Man both selected Peyton Manning and Tony Romo right behind me, going QB Qb QB. Well, I beleive it was coming towards the end of round 4 and I had Anderson qued up. Wouldn't you know, Warhog right before me goes for his 2nd QB and selects Derek Anderson. Peyton Manning who also has a week 4 bye was his QB and he snaked Anderson. I scrapped the idea of QB again and took another WR.

It's the end of round 4 and I don't have a RB. So, in week 4 I have no QB, my top WR is benched and no drafted RB's as of yet. From there, I saw in a break in the RB runs and pretty much made my move on that position. I believe i selected RB the next 4 out of 5 rounds and took RB's who I think have a shot to score Td's. I ended up with 6 RB's:

Lendale White

Rashard Mendehall

Deuce McCallister

Felix Jones

Darren Sproles

Chester Taylor

Not a bad group of guys for starting at RB so late. You could make a case for each of those guys scoring a TD in a given week. The strength of that group is not one of them has a 4 or 5 bye week, so at least that group will be playing each week looking to score a TD for me.

Back to the QB situation. I still needed a QB and circled two names for round 7. I had Marc Bulger first and then Phillip Rivers. I thought they both had decent matchups week 4. It came to my turn in round 7 and Bulger was still there, I took it. I also knew Joe B. behind me didn't take a QB yet and that could force the issue a bit for him. I liked Bulger also because the knock on him is getting hurt, but this league is only 5 weeks. I didn't like he had a week 5 bye, meaning I would need Brady to step up that week......but that's my NO. 1 pick and it is Brady. I checked the matchup and it was vs. S.F. week 5....if S.F. shuts Brady down in week 5, I guess oh well and it's not meant to be. Last year the guy would have 5 Td's by half time vs. a team like that.

So my Qb's were set, I wasn't drafting another QB with two QB's I feel should score. I picked up Cooley at TE, a solid TD/red zone guy.]

My kickers are above average in Bironas and Graham, both kickers with later bye weeks. However, my defenses are average at best with Tennessee and KC. I went with KC 2nd (wasn't much left believe me when I drafted them) because week 4 they were at home vs. Denver. (I like defenses at home and like I said, I really focused on trying to score on week 4 with my top 2 guys out that week).

My top 3 WR look like:

Reggie Wayne

Anquan Boldin

Torry Holt

I thought that was above average. Torry Holt slid pretty far, he does have a week 5 bye as well, but I took him because I have Bulger and liked the week 4 matchup and am hoping for the Holt/Bulger combo once or twice that given week.

You have to get lucky in this thing. A backup defense getting 2 Td's on a given week could be the difference of moving on or getting booted. It may be a kicker gets 5 field goals that week to just get you passed someone else.

Either way, I enjoyed the draft. It was something different and I think everyone else enjoyed it too.

I'll take a look at some of the other teams and comment, there were certainly some odd duck picks at times but you never know in this format. You also play close attention to players/owners who are close to your pick. Joe B. picked right before me and I noticed he was very deliberate in not taking players with 4 and 5 bye weeks. I think over the long haul he picked a team that should (you never know in this crazy format) do enough each week to keep moving forward. I'll take a look at some other teams and analyze a little and mention some picks I liked a little later.

I used the Draft Dominator and removed all the stat projections except those in weeks 1-5. Right away I saw there were a few Defenses that stood out and two kickers. With the scoring format it is very easy with a top kicker and top defense to make up a 1 or even 2 TD shortfall.

I decided before the draft that I would take at least one of each early and punt the TE category. Even the top TEs might only get 2-3 TEs in less than a third of the season, and if you were unlucky enough those might come after you are eliminated. I could take a lot of TEs to assure production at the position, but that didn't seem like the right way to go. Kickers and Defenses were virtually assured of scoring points every week, so getting some top picks at those positions was my goal.

I didn't see much at RB on the board, so I went with the Dominator's #1 QB, Tony Romo, who has no bye like Manning and Brady do.

In round 2 I went with Andre Johnson and followed up with Santonio Holmes to give me a decent start at WR. In the 4th I needed to get my first RB, Selvin Young. Then grabbed Jonathan Stewart, hoping to get DeAngelo later in the draft.

I was going to go for a defense in the 6th. San Diego stood out with a VDB value of 21, versus the #2 team which was Pittsburgh with 14. I wanted to either get San Diego, or get the combo of Jacksonville and Buffalo, with Jacksonville having good projections in weeks 1 and 2, and Buffalo looking very strong weeks 3-5. San Diego was gone before my next pick, so I took Jacksonville in the 6th.

I followed through with my predraft plan and took Folk who had VBD of 13 in the 7th. I used the 8th to get under-rated Garrard to cover me if Romo has an off week. In the 9th I saw no other kickers off the board, so I went ahead the second, Kaeding who had VBD of 12. For reference, the #3 kicker had a VBD value of only 5, so having #1 and #2 on the list should give me a good edge and also freed up rosters spots so I didn't have to bother with a 3rd kicker.

I missed out on Buffalo as my second D, but #2 ranked Pittsburgh was still on the board so I grabbed them, which meant I could stay with only two defenses.

The rest of the draft I mostly rounded out my RBs and WRs. I ended up missing DeAngelo by one pick. I got LJ Smith at TE and was only going to go with one TE, but in the 21st Desmond Clark looked like decent value so I took him instead of another WR.

Here is my lineup

QB Romo, Garrard

RB S Young, Stewart, Rhodes, Fargas, Washington, Betts

WR A Johnson, Holmes, V Jackson, D Williams, James Jones, Patten, Toomer, McDonald

TE LJ Smith, Des Clark

K Folk, Kaeding

D Jacksonville, Pittsburgh

According to the draft dominator I have the best team measured either by total team strength or starters only. Hopefully luck will be with me and I can advance to the second round. Or at least to week 2!

Don't really like this strategy because of the roster space issue but it should produce consistent weekly results...probably would have drafted a WR/RB/D instead of Croyle and Clemens.
Yeah, I obviously went QB late. I took Clemens with the third to last pick. I don't love Gorssman or Croyle, but they should be starting at least through the first five weeks. But in general, I knew I was weak at QB.

It's probably been 15 years since I played in a TD only league, and like others, I entered the draft with the idea to have some fun and keep it simple. I figured the scoring and format would make for an interesting, non-traditional draft, and it was. Good group of guys, Clayton was on the ball to keep things rolling and I had a few LOL moments. I'm still laughing about the Justin Jenkins/Miami DST switch where Mr. Ham stole satch's 6th defense from him.

The only real strategy I had was to get 3 Ks, and not grab ones with week 4 or 5 byes. Ks could easily be the highest scorers and most consistent, and I'm hoping by having 3 of them I can increase my chance of getting 10+ points a week from that position. It may only be a few more points, but some huge K weeks might just keep some teams alive, and some bad K weeks might send some packing. Sacrificing a late round WR sleeper for an additional K didn't seem like too steep a price either.

6.02 - McNabb, Donovan PHI QB - 7

10.02 - Campbell, Jason WAS QB - 10

I'm finding McNabb on a lot of my teams this year. I don't remember what number QB he was off the board, but I liked the value in getting a QB with top 5 potential at this point in a QB happy draft. He's always an injury risk, but only playing a max of 5 weeks should help eliminate some of that risk. I also like McNabb in best ball formats as he is capable of putting up some huge weeks, while still managing to get a TD in some of his rough ones.

1.11 - Portis, Clinton WAS RB - 10

2.02 - Lynch, Marshawn BUF RB - 6

7.11 - Jones, Thomas NYJ RB - 5

8.02 - Green, Ahman HOU RB - 8

16.02 - Jackson, Fred BUF RB - 6

I have Portis ranked higher than most this year. His early schedule isn't the easiest, but I still like his odds of getting a TD even against stiffer Ds. Lynch is a risky pick because of a possible suspension. Losing him for a couple of games would hurt, which is why I drafted Fred Jackson later, but I like his early schedule and odds to increase his TD total. I debated going Owens with that pick, which could have been the smarter move especially since there was a pretty big run on WRs shortly after. T Jones and Ahman were too good to pass up, even with T Jones' week 5 bye. I don't have any RBs that I see putting up some big multi-TD weeks, but I feel pretty comfortable about getting 12 points a week from this group.

4.02 - Marshall, Brandon DEN WR - 8

5.11 - Ward, Hines PIT WR - 6

11.11 - Johnson, Bryant SFO WR - 9

12.02 - Williams, Reggie JAC WR - 7

17.11 - Stokley, Brandon DEN WR - 8

18.02 - Jackson, Chad NEP WR - 4

22.02 - Kelly, Malcolm WAS WR ® - 10

My weakest and most risky area. If Marshall misses time it will really hurt my chances to move on. I'm still high on him though, more than most, so he's another player that seems to find his way on a lot of my teams. If Marshall does miss time, Stokley might be able to sneak a TD in there to help take some of the burden. I liked the value with Ward and Reggie, considering what was available at the time. B Johnson and C Jackson give me some sleeper/upside guys, and I'd be thrilled if Kelley just grabs 1 TD for me.

3.11 - Witten, Jason DAL TE - 10

21.11 - Fasano, Anthony MIA TE - 4

I was the first to take a TE, but Witten was the highest rated guy on my list when 3.11 came up. I'm expecting a slight increase in his TDs this year which is why I felt OK with taking him this early. Fasano is one of my sleeper TEs this year. Maybe more in dynasty leagues, and other formats, but the pickings were slim and I did manage to grab him 2 rounds after I first started to consider him.

13.11 - Crosby, Mason GBP PK - 8

15.11 - Longwell, Ryan MIN PK - 8

19.11 - Suisham, Shaun WAS PK - 10

Top Ks on my board at the time. Crosby I'm pretty high on as the Packers should still see plenty of scoring opps. Same for Longwell. Suisham locks up just about every offensive score the Skins should have. I didn't plan that, but hopefully there is a lot of them.

9.11 - Bills, Buffalo BUF Def - 6

14.02 - Ravens, Baltimore BAL Def - 10

20.02 - Jets, New York NYJ Def - 5

Took the Bills DST earlier than I would have liked. Quite a few were gone and they were one of the last top DSTs on my board. I liked getting the Ravens DST where I did, and the NYJ DST is one of my sleepers. I considered taking them a couple of rounds earlier too, so my sleepers definitely fell for me.

Because of the format it's hard to get overly thrilled by looking at this team on paper. I don't lose any starters to byes, and only 4 back-ups, so I'm happy there. I didn't purposely pass on anyone because of byes though. Kind of higher risk with Lynch and Marshall, but every now and then I gotta play a little "No guts, No glory".

Definitely a fun draft. We'll see how it goes...

Absolutely agree, and I knew it might haunt me when I passed on a top WR for Lynch in the 2nd. Nine WRs off the board between picks 2.04 and 3.01, then another 3 gone before I picked again. I also missed out on a few mid and late round WRs... Driver, Curtis, Coles, Walker, Mason. I liked the value with those guys and should have pulled the trigger a little sooner.

Your top QB, top WR and 2nd best RB (3 of your first 6 picks) are all off on week 4. You have a solid team, but an A+ grade would indicate no weaknesses. This team will likely struggle in week 4.

True, I'll knock it down to an A although I disagree that the team will likely struggle given the depth.

Dave Baker:

Interesting- 5 Qb's

Best Pick: Marion Barber, stole my pick and changed the shape of my draft

Weakness: 1 Defense, not sure why when you have 5 Qb's and 3 TE's. With 22 rounds and the importance of defense in this league, should have 2.

Acefootball:

Interesting: Pretty straight forward draft, solid.

Best Pick: Graham at 4.12

Weakness: Not much, kicker week 4, good chance of moving on

Iron Toe Nedney:

Interesting- I'm not sure you'll get a TD at Rb outside of ADP.

Best Pick- C. Palmer at 3.02 when top 3 Qb's went at 1.05, 6 and 7.

Weakness: 2nd QB and Rb's outside of ADP

Joe Bryant:

Interesting- Chose Westy at 1.4 in a TD only league.

Best Pick: Rivers at 9.04, Kevin Boss at 21.04 and McGahee at 3.04. Good shot to move on.

Weakness: Had to draft next to me but there's nothing you could do about that. *wink*

Kleck

Interesting: Passed on T.O. in Rd. 2. Has the old Dallas TE Combo of Witten and Fasano.

Weakness: Not a lot, WR's may lack some firepower, shot to move on.

Best Pick: Reggie Williams in the 12th, nothing overly stands out but just some solid value which adds up.

Lhucks:

Interesting: For a 2nd, I thought you'd get T.O. in the 2nd, I'm glad you didn't.

Weakness: Round 4 but you're not the only team in that boat.

Best Pick: Randy Moss, Javon Walker at 10.05 and Forte at 5.08. Good chance to move on if you escape week 4.

Mr. Ham:

Interesting- Brett Farve at 9.09

Weakness-Lots of week 4 and 5 bye weeks

Best Pick- S. Moss at 10.04 and Shockey at 8.04...will be holding your breath weeks 4 and 5

Quizguy-

Interesting: Picked 1st Defense, I didn't know you were THAT guy.

Weakness- Only 1 TE

Best Pick: Kenny Watson at 20.01, Like your team a lot actually but you should have gotten another TE. With 22 rounds, no reason not to have 2 TE's and Kevin Boss was available till round 21, should have taken him over someone like Kevin Jones who's on PUP.

Satch-

Interesting: Drafting Charlie Batch

Best Pick: I'd like to say Charlie Batch, but NOT. S. Alexander in round 19 and Marvin Harrison at 5.10

Weakness: Overall firepower could be a little low

Duff Man:

Interesting: Selvin Young in round 4 and Nick Folk at 6.06

Weakness: RB is very week

Best Pick: Tony Romo and Toomer in round 20

Warhogs:

Interesting: 2 QB's in the top 4 rounds

Weakness: Could be at RB, lots of 4 and 5 bye weeks

Best Pick: Meachem in round 18 and Ray Rice in round 19

Iwannabeacowboybaby!:

Interesting: Top 2 picks are on bye week 4

Weakness- Will be rolling the dice week 4 with about 5 teams

Best Pick- Tory Holt in round 4, Darren Sproles in round 19

I thought the Batch pick made perfect sense. I expect big numbers from Big Ben and Pittsburgh's offense in general. I'm rolling with Roethlisberger through the first 5 weeks, and took Batch as injury insurance. If Ben has a bad week, it will likely be more than offset by one of my 5 defensive options. Most QB's will score 4, 8, or 12 points if they're lucky. One of my 5 defenses will almost assuredly score more than that on a weekly basis. In other words, why waste roster spots on multiple QB's only to gain 4 points, when you could gain much more by having multiple defensive options? Chances are that Ben will score more than any other QB I could've taken after him, so what's the point in taking another QB? Defense is much more hard to predict and oftentimes involves luck, like fumbles, TD's etc. My starting RB's are Steven Jackson and Frank Gore. 2 top 10 RB's, not bad.My starting WR's are the Colts tandem of Harrison and Gonzalez, and Sydney Rice. Harrison looks great in camp, and on weeks he doesn't score, Gonzalez's odds go up. Sydney Rice is a decent 3rd. I like my Colts tandem strategy. My starting TE will be either Gates or Winslow. I have the #1 TE and the #2 TE in whichever order you want. One of them is almost guaranteed to score every week, hopefully twice. Kickers, whatever.Defenses: Hardest position to predict on a weekly basis. I have 5. My odds of having a big week defensively every week are great.Overall, my weakest position is WR, but if Harrison is Harrison and Rice becomes the go to guy I could be okay. With my top 5 QB, 2 top 10 RBs, #1 TE's, and 5 defenses I think I have a lineup that will be consistent.

Last year there were 2 weeks in the first 5 where neither Gates or Winslow scored. Out of the 16 weeks there were 8 weeks where neither scored (they shared a bye).Kickers are the second highest scorers in this format (after D) and are as hard to predict as defenses. I agree with your statements about the D, but they apply to kickers as well.
