I'm surprised this hasn't been posted here yet.

Then again, maybe it's refreshing when we finally reach a point that a story like this is no big deal. But I certainly don't think we're there yet.

Regardless, I'm very proud of the history made today at my alma mater. Congrats, Derrick.

My good friend who is gay played D1 basketball at a very small college. Still D1, though. Obviously, he was not openly gay then. But the weird thing is if you were to meet him, you'd know he was gay within the first three words of him talking. He's not flamboyant, but he's got that gay voice. I often wondered if people knew back then, or if everyone was just so blind to the gay that it never crossed their mind. He played back in the early 90's.

"Did you hear that Branch Rickey is going to make Jackie Robinson the first negro player in the major leagues?"

"WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHAT COLOR HIS SKIN IS?!?"

It's definitely getting closer. When I saw the news and before I read the (really great) article on OutSports, I definitely didn't have the same "wow" reaction to it that I had when Sam came out, or when the college baseball player did (believe he was called the first openly gay active player, since Sam's season was done).

Does he still play?

No. He was in college playing back in the early 90's. He was not quite NBA material. And by not quite, I mean no where near.

What about the guy the Gonzaga fans were taunting a few years back when he shot free throws?

"Broke-back...mountain... Clap, clap... Clapclapclap"

Not sure I'd call Duke a small D1 school. But well played, sir.
