Uncertainty surrounding Jahvid Best continues (1 Viewer)

I'm staying away from Best. Its too bad, the guy is talented.

Gotta wonder how much longer this guy will continue to play if cleared. He cant be too many concussions away from being done.

Jene,

From your pov, is there a difference between Collie and Best's situations other than Collie's horrible yr was a year earlier?

How long has this been going on? I can't imagine he should be stepping on the field again if it takes this long to clear him.

I'm not trying to step in and answer for Jene but I think the tricky thing with concussions is that the after effects vary greatly from player to player. One player may suffer a concussion and be ready to return in a week while the next guy might take several weeks. Heck, Justin Morneau for the Twins took forever to get back in the lineup and is still a shell of the player he was and I think that started like a year and a half ago.

Mayhew says 20 specialists involved with Best's care. I think you should read his comment that Best will "eventually" be cleared as "we've no idea" when he'll be cleared.
Well, there you go. If all but 3-4 specialists say he's fine to play, guess what? Best will not be playing. How big of a blow to the Lions organization (and doctors) do you think it would be if a kid who was cleared to play got injured again this season? Especially if it was a split decision between those 20 specialists. With that said, I am a Best owner who bought cheap in Dynasty figuring he would play this year EVENTUALLY. We have a cushy IR spot if he doesn't pad up this year and I drafted accordingly.

Hard to say how similar the nature and duration of their symptoms were. I think Collie's symptoms ended sooner and that he was cleared much earlier, but I don't specifically remember. For now, the major difference is that Best has an issue that's caused an extended delay in his gaining clearance. Without knowing what that issue is -- there was a later tweet from Paula Pasche that suggested that Best has no symptoms at all, which is hard to believe -- I'm at a loss to be more specific than that.

Could the Lions just be extending time between contact simply to ensure maximum healing? Is there any literature to suggest that additional time post symptoms decreases the risk of repeat?

I'm not aware of any studies reporting a decreased risk of recurrence with added healing time, though it's a reasonable conclusion to draw. I doubt that's what's happening in Best's case. Camp is underway, he needs to get into football shape and the Lions need to know that he can handle contact well before setting their roster for the regular season. The difficulty for me with any recurrence discussion is this:**The commonly cited literature showing an increased risk for recurrence in those who have sustained one concussion included many athletes who were likely not fully recovered from their previous discussion.**It's possible that a "fully recovered" athlete is at no higher risk for a concussion than an athlete who's never sustained a concussion. But there have been studies -- albeit mostly in younger athletes -- that suggest that blood flow and neurochemical changes may persist after clinical resolution of symptoms. **Finally, I think it's reasonable to argue that some athletes may be more prone to concussion based on anatomy and physiology than others at baseline. But I know of no easy way to make that prediction or examine that hypothesis.

Writing is in the wall with this kid and has been for a long time now. It's a crying shame bc he is massively talented but he might not play another snap of football in the nfl again let alone return to prominence as a starter.

What will be very telling is if the bengals sign a veteran rb during co and while best is still not cleared. Icant imagine them feeling comfy cozy about starting the season with Kevin smith as their only legitimate and healthy rb. Leshoure cannot be counted on coming off that Achilles injury.

there is no uncertainty in my mind.best is undraftable.
Depends where you can get him. I'm scooping him up around Round 10 all day long (and have been getting him cheap in auction leagues).
I don't like to waste 10th round picks. YMMV.
Lions don't seem to have a problem wasting 1st round picks.
I aim to be more successful in my drafting than the Lions...

Kevin Smith SOD now?
Kevin Smith is THE guy to own in Detroit this year, Best is this close to never playing again and Leshoure misses 2 games plus is coming off a catastrophic injury. Kevin Smith will be on alot of my teams this Fall
been saying it since April
I expect the Lions to take it slow with Leshoure but they've given every indication they want him to be the lead back at some point this season. I like Smith's ADP and expect him to do well early though.

If Benson or Grant sign here the noise of Best being cut accross the fantasy world will be deafening.

Smith is the guy here. Look how they forced the ball to him last year even when he was carrying the bad ankle.

Leshoure hasnt played a meaningful NFL down yet, bit early to push him forward as the next Barry and that is without even taking into account his suspension.

I have him in my Dynasty and am losing confidence that he will be contributing long term.Time will tell.

seems like ppl are way overreacting in this thread. and that is coming from someone who took kevin smith ahead of best prior to this news.

Nobody is undraftable but I certainly wouldn't take him before Kevin Smith and every other RB likely to get significant snaps. End of draft flyer? Sure. Could be gold. Could get 2 good games out of him and trade him. But certainly not before about the 16th round. If you're not into handcuffing he's probably a reasonable pick in that area.

But realistically- with an ADP of 74 there is no way im touching Best. Going ahead of J-Stew, Ingram, and Donald Brown? Madness. If he were cleared and in camp hitting, maaaaaybe, but in his current status people are spending WAY to high a pick.

i sincerely hope that he is ok he seems to have a lot of talent and i always root for everyone to get the chance to make the most of whatever gifts the good lord almighty big kahuna up in the heavens gave to them and i for one would like to see where he could go if he had some full seasons to really rev it up so here is the best wishes from the old swcer

From Jim Schwartz today:

The only thing I will say is we're measuring Jahvid in weeks, not days," Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. "He's not day-to-day A lot of these guys are day-to-day We're measuring his progress in weeks. He's doing very well. He's working very, very hard. He's in supreme condition, and I know this, when he's cleared, he's going to be tough to handle because he'll be ready.
I wish it were otherwise, but the statements of the past 48 hours strongly suggest that Best remains sidelined indefinitely.

FBG might want to update their projections....

Still have

65 Kevin Smith DET / 5 7 75 315 4.2 2 12 94 7.8 0 52.9

How so? He's a small RB with a history of concussions of which the most recent was 10 months ago and he still hasn't been cleared by doctors. I agree with the sentiment that Best is almost undraftable this year. It's really too bad as Best is an extremely talented kid.

Best is one of those guys I'm avoiding this year. I may be wrong on him; just means I need to be right on the guy I do take.
