Unconfirmed: Randy Moss Resigns With Patriots (1 Viewer)

Losing AS and Gay is going to create a major hole in their secondary so expect them to win 41-38 this season instead of 41-10
Losing Samuel is going to be hard but they are obviously prepared to lose Gay (their nickel back last year) and safety Eugene Wilson. The Pats planned for this to an extent by drafting Brandon Meriweather; all of this chatter that the secondary is about to undergo a massive overhaul overstates the reality of the situation.
Hmm...losing your #1 CB, #3 CB, and one of your top S. Yep, no need to mention overhaul when there are only 4-5 basic secondary postions. Look nobody is saying that they can't fill the spots, but you have to call a spade a spade. It's an overhaul and we're didn't even mention that the so called # 2 CB is Hobbs and the remaining S (Harrison) is on the downside of his career. You have to be realistic, it's MAJOR change that is happening in that secondary and it's not overstating it one bit.

Eugene Wilson has had 55 tackles in the last two years combined with 1 INT. He was a healthy scratch in several games this season. He's no real loss.

Randall gay has played 24 regular season games in the last 3 years. He was healthy last year for the first time in a long time. He was pretty good when he was in there, but he didn't play a whole lot due to injury. The pats are definitely not as good as they would be with him, but he's not a huge loss.

They lost 1 major player to free agency on defense and cut another. They've lost 2 part-time players. It's not an overhaul just more of a normal off-season.

For the record I wish they had Samuel and Gay next year, but not at the prices others are paying.

There are major issues with that D that I do not see how they are going to hold up with just bringing in Ty Law who is an aging vet well on the downside of his career and ability. Three of their four starting LB's are clearly aging vet's well on the downside of their careers and ability. Harrison is an aging vet well on the downside of his career and ability. They lost a young and very good CB in Samuel. They lost a decent nickle back in Gay. They lost a solid safety in Wilson. You are going to tell me that they are going to fill their D with rookie's to fill the void left by losing these guys and cover for the all AARP team they have? Really? You do not see major issues with their defense? This is in the whole master plan? Yea.. sure.

For the nth time, Eugene Wilson wasn't even a decent player the last two years in new England. He was the 4th best safety on the team (behind Harrison, Sanders, Merriweather) and probably wouldn't even beat out Willie Andrews in 2008 even if he'd stayed on the team. He's not even "Just Another Guy" at this point.

The Patriots still have over $22 million in cap space at this point. Even with a Moss signing, they can still fill in some of the gaps on defense and they will most likely add an impact defensive player in the draft. Imagine if they add Gholston to the LB mix. That solves a lot of problems immediately.

While still unconfirmed, I have heard that a deal is supposed to be finalized and announced today. But until Moss signs on the dotted line, at this point I would still say anything is possible.

*Wilson is a spare part. He was good his first two years and looked like he was headed for a solid career but injuries and just basic bad play rendered him virtually useless. Maybe a change of scenery will revive a once promising career.

*Randall Gay is nothing special. He missed pretty much all of 2005 and 2006. He's nothing more than a nickelback. Any team would take him as long as he came cheap. He's not worth much money.

*Samuel is a huge loss. He's a legit #1 who may or may not be overpaid but that doesn't mean his departure doesn't leave a very big hole in the secondary.

Individually the only big loss the Pats suffered was Samuel. The problem is that overall the Pats have to fill numerous holes in their back eight (i.e. make improvements from 2007) and unless Pierre Woods and the Richardson kid from ND really step up they have no one on their roster other than Merriweather who has much upside. With around 22 mil (that number will drop if Moss resigns) the #7 pick and two #3's the Pats have some ammo to address these areas. I have my concerns about being able to upgrade both the secondary and LB corps but I've learned with the Pats the offseason can quite often be a marathon and not a sprint. Yet, there is zero doubt tat a lot of work needs to be done to solidify this defense and until we see what their acquisitions are it's just a guessing game as to the state of their D for 2008.

Belichick would like to sign Law since he basically owns Peyton Manning in NE's defensive system. Yeah, he's older but he can still make plays.

David, any idea if the numbers being floated is anywhere near accurate? 5/52?
I have heard two variations of a potential contract.I heard months ago of a 5-year offer with numbers in the $48-52 million range including a bonus of $15-$20 million with the intent of it really being a viable contract for 3-4 years with the last year basically a throwaway balloon year. I also believe that some of the money was supposed to be in roster bonuses (which players don't normally go for because they are not guaranteed). I also heard something about incentives (like games played) that would help NE way more than it would help Moss. So the 5-year, $52 million, $25 million mentioned in this thread may be an offshoot of that proposed deal.I have also heard about a 3-year, $30 million variation that would be more along what the Pats would want to be in terms of length and payout, with a bonus rumored in the $12-$15 million range. These has been some pretty wild speculation as to why there have been some bumps in the road, but I'll wait to see what happens and what else I hear as there is no point in adding more rumors to this than there already are.

It strikes me that the 3 years, $30mm is exactly the kind of deal New England would offer up, but Moss would say "you have to do better than that." If, in fact, they are close to announcing a deal today, I would be stunned if Moss didn't get more years and guaranteed money than 3/30/12.
