Unofficial $20K Contest Roster thread (1 Viewer)

Here's my best crack at it (even though I am regretting not keeping LaMar Gordon at $2 with the talk of trad rumors -- now proven true). Team Name = Fleshy Headed Mutants (same as last year).QB:Carson Palmer - Bye 5 $ 8 3.2%Joey Harrington - Bye 4 $ 7 2.8%David Carr - Bye 7 $ 6 2.4%Total QB: $ 21 8.4%I originally wanted to get Hasselbeck or Trent Green, but remembered how last year I think I spent $17 on Kurt Warner because I was too cheap to pay a few more bucks for Peyton Manning. Well, Warner crapped out on me, but my other QB's picked up the slack. So this year I am taking a QBBC approach, hoping that at least one of the three will go off each week (all three have different bye weeks).RB:Portis, Clinton - Bye 7 $ 82 32.8%Jones, Thomas - Bye 5 $ 33 13.2%Griffin, Quentin - Bye 10 $ 20 8.0%Davenport, Najeh - Bye 9 $ 3 1.2%Dayne, Ron - Bye 6 $ 3 1.2%Total RB: $141 56.4%Definitely a Running Back heavy team. Last year I was big on Ahman Green and Jamal Lewis, which of course, helped me make it to the later rounds. They were fairly cheap last year. I don't remember how far I went (if anyone has a link to last year's standings, I would greatly appreciate it). I looked at the point dropoff (average pts per game) between stud QBs (Culpepper, Manning, Hasselbeck, Green) and noticed there was only about a 5pt per week difference between studs and middle of the road. For RBs, however, the difference in pts per week is more like 10 pts per week (going on value). So I decided to load up on RB's (all with different bye weeks). Hopefully Portis will be able to endure the workload in Washington. I have a feeling I should have kept Lamar Gordon at $2 instead of being a Wisconsin homer and taking Dayne (even though I hear he looks good and 30 pounds lighter?)WR:Jackson, Darrell - Bye 4 $ 38 15.2%Lloyd, Brandon - Bye 7 $ 17 6.8%Ferguson, Robert - Bye 9 $ 4 1.6%Hilliard, Ike - Bye 6 $ 3 1.2%Bradford, Corey - Bye 7 $ 2 0.8%Parker, Eric - Bye 10 $ 2 0.8%Terrell, David - Bye 5 $ 2 0.8%Total WR: $ 68 27.2%I wanted Darrell Jackson and Jimmy Smith as my 1-2 punch, but couldn't swing it. I'm hoping I got some steals at WR at the $2-4$ range. Ferguson was the only Packer on the 1st team to score in pre-season. Keep hearing a lot of hype on J. Walker, but haven't seen him produce (I know, it's pre-season). Only two WR have the same bye. Pretty weak at WR, but hopefully at least 3 of the 7 will go off at the right time...TE:Stevens, Jerramy - Bye 4 $ 4 1.6%Smith, LJ - Bye 5 $ 3 1.2%Total TE: $ 7 2.8%I think last year's team won with Tony Gonzalez. Something to keep an eye on this year. Just couldn't justify the $39... If the winning team has Gonzo this year, I'm picking him next year!K:Hanson, Jason - Bye 4 $ 3 1.2%Graham, Shayne - Bye 5 $ 2 0.8%Total Kicker: $ 5 2.0%They're kickers. Nuff said.Def:Green Bay - Bye 9 $ 4 1.6%St Louis - Bye 8 $ 4 1.6%Total Defense: $ 8 3.2%Homer again. Green Bay D has been focused on turnovers in camp this year. No point or yardage penalties, so why not. St Louis is solid too for $4.Time to sit back and watch the show... Good luck gentlemen!

Each week your top QB, top 2 RBs, top 3 WRs, top TE, top PK and top Defense will count towards your weekly total. You do not have to select who will play. You will receive the maximum score based on your roster.
Damn, I didn't see that. I thought it was all players all the time. I would have spent a little more on one QB, 2 RBs, and 3 WRs, and a little less on the "backups." Crap.Well, anyway, I ended up with the same lineup as everybody else, so I guess most of us are in the same boat.
:thumbup:GB spending money on Peyton and Priest. What do I care what my 3rd QB does?

Using Wheelhouse's method but applying it only to the top starters required at each position (1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1K, 1DEF):1410 pts. & $186 total at $7.58 PPDS

We only get points for our top QB, not the total points that all our QB's put up.

From the Contest Rules page

Each week your top QB, top 2 RBs, top 3 WRs, top TE, top PK and top Defense will count towards your weekly total. You do not have to select who will play. You will receive the maximum score based on your roster.
Ohhhhh! Aww man - well there goes my strategy. I did not see that small print in the scoring. HmmmmmmEach week your top QB, top 2 RBs, top 3 WRs, top TE, top PK and top Defense will count towards your weekly total. You do not have to select who will play. You will receive the maximum score based on your roster.

This changes my whole philosophy then....I wish I knew that before. Well - I hope I can still stay afloat, but I doubt it. Shame on me for not noticing that. Doh! :bag:
:rotflmao: You've GOT to be kidding! :rotflmao:

Didn't put a whole lot of thought into it... kind of hard to get too crazy about it with 10,000 contestants and 6 other leagues to worry about. From the gut...QB 1 Green 182 Gannon 93 Carr 6RB 1 Westbrook 312 L Suggs 153 M Williams 64 Dayne 35 T Jones 33WR 1 Porter 212 Fitzgerald 113 Burress 194 Wayne 125 Rogers 96 Kennison 117 Rice 4TE 1 R McMichael 82 Kleinasser 5PK 1 Janikowski 42 Vanderjagt 8DEF 1 New England 102 Philly 6 ---------------TOTAL 249I didn't even bother to try to find a player with the extra point left over. I DID try to access my team this morning to add Gordon, but of course she was locked up by then.Good luck.

Just read through most of this thread. Some of the analysis I agreed with but some of you guys are putting too much emphasis on potential and not enough on production. Antonio Gates and Larry Fitzgerald are probably my biggest examples of this. My fear in this type of contest is taking "sucker" picks. Guys that look like value but really aren't. Last year for me it was guys like Lelie, Rod Smith, Rod Gardner and Eddie George that really dragged me down. Hopefully I avoided that this year.

QBs $30 (Carr $6, Brad Johnson $9, Pennington $15)

Seeing alot of these guys on other rosters. Wanted to upgrade to Hasselbeck but chickened out.

RBs $138 (Edge James $73, Thomas Jones $33, Julius Jones $15, Lee Suggs $15, Chris Perry $2)

I like Edge in this format. I think he will catch a lot of balls out of the backfield. Thomas Jones is risky but I like what I have been hearing out of Chi. I took Juli Jones over Wheatley, hopefully he becomes the man in Dallas. I'm scared about Suggs injury now. I see Perry taking over for Johnson this year and if nothing else catching some balls out of the backfield.

WRs $56 (Branch $13, Wayne $12, Stallworth $10, Rogers $9, Driver $6, Bennett $4, Parker $2)

I'm hoping Branch turns out to be the biggest value here. Last year WRs killed me, this crew should outperfom them by a mile. Stallworth might end up being a sucker pick here.

TEs $9 (Dallas Clark $6, Mili $3)

Last year they got 2 pts per reception, now they are less valuable.

K $5 (Hanson $3, Kris Brown $2)

Def $12 (Tampa $6, Philly $6)

I didn't like many of the WRs between $15 and $25 so I spent the extra bucks here.

QBs = $28---------------Testaverde 4Gannon 9Pennington 15I think Gannon was the best value QB available. Pennington should compete weekly for high stat total and I would not be surprised to see Vinny sneak in a week or twoRBs = $87----------------Q Griff 20McGahee 5C Brown 32Suggs 15Julius Jones 15Brown plus Q Griff/Suggs for the first half, then J Jones and McGahee making some noise in the second half. Should be respectable if not flashy all seasonWRs = $108------------------Ant. Bryant 3CAlico 6Northcutt 5Randy Moss 72Kev Johnson 6Eric Parker 2D Stallworth 10Moss will be the conrnerstone of the franchise and if I can survive past his week 4 bye I think I have a big shot at taking it all. Bryant, CAlico and Stallworth should each explode 3-4 games while Northcutt, KJ, and Parker should offer some steady production. WRs will carry this team or kill it. I've seen only one other squad with Moss and that excites me.TEs = $10------------Witten 7LJ SMith 3A Parcells TE should be productive, esp. with a point per reception. With a deep threat TO, Smith may be very productive across the middle and on short routesK = $10-----------Hanson 3Elam 7Elam is a scoring machine and his hammy is finally healed. Hanson could be good if the Det O takes offDef = $12------------Indy 3Balt 9Dungy and Bellichik will demand and receive sacks and turnovers=========================QBs may weaken late season, but RBs could get stronger. Randy Moss and several high weekly totals from WR longshots Bryant, Calico and Stallworth will carry the team several weeks by themsleves.

Here's my lineup. Philosophy in this type of contest is to load up on "volatility". Given the number of contestants, playing this safe and spending a lot of money on known studs is a losing stand. Instead, diversify with "upside" players and rely on the fact that you don't have to identify which weeks they will "breakout".QB -$22Gannon - 9Harrington - 7Carr - 6RB - $127DDavis $50TJones $33CBrown $32Suggs $15WR - $76AJohnson $31Fitzgerald - $11Rogers - $9Stallworth - $10Calico - $6QMorgan - $7Terrell - $2TEWitten - $7LJSmith - $3KEdgingerKBrownDDenverIndy

As I recall:QB Favre Palmer VinnyRB James C. Brown Griffin Pittman Dayne WR Rogers Branch Lloyd Stallworth Fitzgerad Parker TerrellTE Witten Smith L.J.K Vandy GrahamDEF MN/WASDon't see to many teams with Palmer on them. Hoping he's the sleeper QB this year

As defending champion of this contest all I hope is that I don't get knocked out embarassingly early. QB Green $18 Favre $15 E Manning $3Like Green a lot this year. Added Favre becaue he never misses a game and can explode any given week. Manning should be the starter for the Giants by mid season and may help down the stretch if I make it that far.RB Brown $32 Westbrook $31 K Jones $32 Suggs $15 McGahee $5Last year went with 1 stud RB - Tomlinson carried my team. This year tried to spread it out more. Have 4 starters & hopefully 1 of them will have a studly game each week. WR Wayne $12 Kennison $11 Rogers $9 Stallworth $10 Driver $6 Gardner $10 Parker $2Same strategy as last year. Low priced WR's with different bye weeks. With at least 6 WR scoring each week quantity will make up for lack of quality. Last year I only had 4 healthy WR's for the second half of the season. TE Jones $7 Kleinsasser $5Last year had Gonzalez and he was huge. With the change to 1pt/rec for TE I didn't think it was worth paying for a top TE.K Vanderjagt $8 Kasay $4Having a top kicker for only a small extra cost should be worth it.Def NE $10 Minn $5Had some extra $ and spent it on the top Def.

If memory serves...QB - Hasselback, McCown, CarrRB - Q Griffin/Bell, W. Green/Suggs, Westbrook(Taking the four committee backs ensures I have the starter)WR - AnJohnson, Porter, Lloyd, Stallworth, Rogers, DanteHall, D. TerrellTE - Witten and ClarkK - Edinger and ReedD - Oakland and Houston

I simply looked to get the most value out of each of my picks. I looked at byes, SOS, projections, and cost just like most of you I'm sure. I see a lot of people were thinking along the same lines as me.QBFavre 15Palmer 8Testeverde 4RBChris Brown 32T. Jones 33B. Westbrook 31L. Going in, I looked at bye weeks, potential, and value. Where possible, I tried to get the guys that fit that mold but also had the easiest strength of schedules.

Here's how it played out...

QB's

Trent Green $18

Brad Johnson $9

Vinny Testeverde $4

TOTAL > $31

Green was the cheapest top 5 qb (potential). BJ has the easiest QB schedule this season with plenty of talent to catch his passes. Vinny had fewer ?? than any $3 qbs.

RB's

Thomas Jones $33

Chris Brown $32

Quintin Griffin $20

Michael Pittman $3

Tony Hollings $2

TOTAL > $90

I loaded up on guys with potential for top 5-10 in points but without the top 5 price tag. Pittman, Griffin and Brown have 3 of the 5 easiest schedules (I think Pittman will take the #1 in TB once the suspension is over). Hollings will play some, can break a long one any time he touches the ball and would take over for Davis if injured.

WR's

Randy Moss $72

Larry Fitzgerald $11

Donald Driver $6

Robert Ferguson $4

Eric Parker $2

David Terrell $2

Cory Bradford $2

TOTAL > $99

I had to have Moss as he I expect him to absolutely explode this season. Perhaps breaking rec. single season records. I like Fitz's potential as Denny Green absolutely loves himn and the system produces plenty of wr scoring. Getting both Driver and Fergie should land me the hot hand in GB when it isn't Walker. Parker and Terrell are $2 #1's, and Bradford has explosive results with his massive YPC. Another year with Carr should improve on last season's numbers.

TE's

Antonio Gates $6

Erron Kinney $4

TOTAL > $10

Going cheap here, I was able to grab 2 TE's with top 10 potential. Kinney has the easiest TE schedule in the league and without Wycheck to take away focus, Kinney's numbers should increase. Gates could be big and has the 7th best TE schedule.

PK's

Morton Anderson $5

Jason Hanson $3

TOTAL > $8

I grab Mort last minute after Vikings signed him. The Vikings K has the easiest schedule. Hanson is a good dome kicker on a team that may struggle to score TD's. His 3rd easiest schedule made a difference when considering other $3 K's.

Defense

Ravens $9

Seahawks $3

TOTAL > $12

Got the top defense this season and together, I have the D's with the 3rd and 4th easiest schedule.

I see many of the same players appearing on other rosters. I think I have good depth, lots of potential, plenty of value and big hitters at each position.

Good luck to everyone! May the best man/woman win!

Props to FBG for putting this together!

Money spent: $249On QBs: $43On RBs: $120On WRs: $54On TEs: $9On PKs: $8On DFs: $15QB JMcCown $8/6QB TBrady $17/3QB TGreen $18/5I like having two good QBs, either of which can go off on a given week. Plus, McCown is there as a cheap QB3 that could possibly step in for a week or two if needed.RB EJames $73/6RB LSuggs $15/8RB JJones $15/4RB TWheatley $14/10RB DRhodes $3/6I wanted a stud, and liked the price of EJames. I am high on Wheatley for 2004, given Norv Turner's reputation of producing great fantasy RBs. When I saw the price was just $14, I added him immediately to my roster and filled in around him. Suggs and JJones are potential fill-ins. DRhodes is on the team as cheap insurance in case my $73 investment gets hurt. Knowing EJames not only has a clear backup but one that has rushed for 1000 yards was part of the reason I chose EJames in the first place. I juggled some of these picks around and wound up leaving QGriffin and CBrown off the team. In the end, I decided that Suggs, JJones, QGriffin ($20), and CBrown ($30+) all have risk to them, and so I might as well pick the less expensive options and fill out my club elsewhere.WR JGalloway $13/8WR RWayne $12/6WR DStallworth $10/8WR CRogers $9/4WR ADavis $4/9WR DBennett $4/9WR BJohnson $2/6Galloway was another guy that I added immediately to my roster. I think he will be a top 10 WR given the number of pass attempts in the Bucs' offense, and getting him for $13 was a great deal. RWayne had a fine 2003, and was another early pick of mine for $12. I had to juggle some things around and managed to get Stallworth and CRogers on the club. Everyone else is just cheap filler.TE JWitten $7/4TE DJolley $2/10Not much to see here. I was trying to figure out a way I could reasonably fit TGonzalez on this club, but could find no solution.PK Longwell $6PK Rackers $2DF Ravens $9DF Buccaneers $6

Hope I 'membered this co-rrectlyFavre - 15Johnson - 9Carr - 6C. Brown - 32K. Jones - 32Griffin - 20Suggs - 15Dayne - 3Porter - 21Burress - 19Lloyd - 17Fitzgerald - 11Stallworth - 10Driver - 6Ferguson - 4Witten - 7Jones - 3J. Brown - 6Kasay - 4GB or TN - 4TB - 6Other than that Favre fella, loaded with nothing but potential. I'm simply hoping that with the veritable smorgasbord of youngsters/guys with their first real shot I'll be able to stay afloat - - and hope for bad games from everyone's big guns to knock some of them out.

lineup is in my sig.I went for young QBs with great potential and different bye weeks. I can easily see any of these guys throwing 3tds in a game.RB is where I saw the most value, I like Thomas Jones in a point per reception league as I see Grossman checking down a lot. Suggs and Griffin can have huge games, while Wheatley will be solid and Julius could be the ROY.I can't help but think that Randy Moss will break records this year, and I want to be a part of it, especially in a point per reception league. Another guy I had to have was Brandon Lloyd, who I think will be incredibly inconsistant but perfect for this format since he'll certainly have a few multi-TD games. The other guys are all upside and cheap as dirt.Went with upside in the TE department, many of us have one of Stevens or Gates I happen to have both.Kickers are kickers, these were cheap.Indy D will have solid games as will Pittsburgh, I see no problem spending Def money elsewhere.

Hrm ... i went this wayQB -- $27Pennington ($15)Palmer ($8)Teste ($4)I like Pennington's odds of suprising to the upside here as well as palmer (who is surrounded by alot of talent IMHO). I started w/ Gannon but switched to palmer due to collins risk. Teste was a filler @ $4 but he can put up some large numbers.RB -- $108Rudi ($40)Brown ($32)Griffin ($20)Wheatley ($14)Fargas ($2)I went to two solid plays (IMHO) w/ Rudi and Brown and two upside players w/ Griffin and Wheatley. Fargas was a handcuff on Wheatley as Bell was too expensive.WR -- $79D, Jackson - 38b, llyod - 17c, Rogers - 9t, calico - 6k, johnson - 5e, parker - 2d, terrel - 2hopefully calico will emerge later in the year. part of my goal is to just survive to week 8. At that point some of the risk plays might allow seperation later in the year (like llyod, calico, parker, terrel). All are #1 WR though. Key is need TDs.TE -- $15R McMicheal - 8J Witten - 7I started w/ Clark (chi) but backed out when I watched them play. Upgraded to McMicheal as he has to upside. J Witten is a good wildcard.K -- $9Brien - 3brown - 6Went for good value on scoring teams. We shall see.DT -- $12Bal -- 9Den -- 3Went for turnovers and TDs here. Both BAL and Den have huge secondaries (or should).

Lineup is in the sig.QBI went with Pennington as my sleeper stud QB - probably top 5 production at a great price. Palmer and Harrington both have huge potentional and will put up the occasional big week. My biggest risk with this team is Pennington at a Week 3 Bye which is going to be the first cut week and both of my other QBs facing tough Ds (Philly and Baltimore). If I can get past Week 3 I should be set.RBPut most of my money here with 5 starting RBs. I love Chris Brown and Deuce Staley - I think Staley might just be the surprise back of the year. He's in great shape, has a good o-line, and on a team that has re-dedicated itself to the run. Couldn't pass up Dunn and Griffin with the 1-pt per catch bonus and Lee Suggs was obvious.WRLots and lots of potential. Like the rules say, your top 3 every week count. All 7 have diffrent bye weeks and all I need is for each to have 2 big weeks.TEDidn't think it was worth it to spend a lot here so I went with 2 guys that I think will have good, solid years in top offenses.KVanderjagt was so worth it for only a few dollars more than everyone else, and Casay is just insurance. I would have gone with Morten Anderson but did not know if he would still count since he's on a different team than listed.DBoth sleeper picks. Seattle has really worked to improve theirs and the Jets have a new attack-style D and get to play Buffalo and Miami twice.Goodl luck to all!

I'm done before I started!!! I didn't use the Stud runningback theory to do my team. I guess it helps if you study last years champs? :wall:

Unfortunatley for me, I didn't think of that till I saw this thread. one thing I noticed about the top 3 teams last year. they all had at least 2 studs on their team that they paid a high price for. First place had P. Manning, LT2 and Gonzales. 2nd had Ahman Green, Lewis and Chad Johnson. 3rd had Lewis and Gonzales. My approach was totally flawed. I picked a group of good running backs hoping that one of them always go off. and a Group of good WR's again hoping that one or 2 of them go off. Same with QB. I don't have ONE STUD on my crappy team. Maybe next year..

NFC WSEAPITSee SEA comments above - Also, I think PIT is BIG AFC Sleeper this yearand so...may the best team win...as long as its mine - Skillet Collide

QB:Johnson, Brad (TB/8) - $9Palmer, Carson (Cin/5) - $8Rattay, Tim (SF/7) - $6Since only one of these guys gets counted every week, I figured I would go for three low priced "boom or bust" players. Palmer and Rattay are both capable of big games every now and then, and I think that Brad Johnson is a tremendous value at $9. I actually wanted David Carr instead of Carson Palmer, but he had the same bye week as Tim Rattay, so I thought that would be a mistake.RB:Dillon, Corey (NE/3) - $55Johnson, Rudi (Cin/5) - $40Griffin, Quentin (Den/10) - $20Williams, Moe (Min/4) - $6Alstott, Mike (TB/8) - $4I would rather get three solid backs than pay an exorbiant amount for one superstar like Priest or LT2. I had Suggs instead of Griffin for the longest time, but shied away at the last moment because of the recent uncertainty surrounding him, and tweaked my lineup to include Griffin instead. Mike Alstott and Moe Williams have something in common; they are both goal-line backs. They offer good value at such low prices because there's a chance they could go off for a multi-touchdown game.WR:Burress, Plaxico (Pit/7) - $19Kennison, Eddie (KC/5) - $11Gardner, Rod (Was/7) - $10Morgan, Quincy (Cle/8) - $7Driver, Donald (GB/9) - $6Rice, Jerry (Oak/10) - $4Davis, Andre' (Cle/8) - $4My philosophy here was to go with cheaply priced receivers that I felt offered good upside. I don't know how anyone can pass up Jerry Rice at $4. He should be a must have on everyone's roster. I like the idea of having both Morgan and Davis because I think that the Cleveland passing game will flourish under Garcia, and one of these guys should be good for a big game each week. The price was right, too.TE:Jones, Freddie (Ari/6) - $7Gates, Antonio (SD/10) - $6Didn't want to spend very much at this position. Hopefully this tandem will be good enough.PK:Elam, Jason (Den/10) - $7Akers, David (Phi/5) - $6Two top kickers. Would have had Vanderjqgt instead of Akers if I had two extra bucks to spendDEF:Baltimore (Bal/6) - $9Dallas (Dal/4) - $6Two top defenses were a high priority for me.

My luck I'd have a stud muffin or two, they'd have one bad game in week 3 and my $2 guys would still be, well, $2 guys and I'd be out without a fight.

First time in this format so I was a bit unsure how to proceed. You can tell me how I did. Trash me, praise me, call me monkey boy. It's okay, I can take it.QB - $23David Carr $6Rich Gannon $9Carson Palmer $8With the best score of the 3 counting toward the total I took 3 guys with big game potential at reduced rates. No shared bye weeks.RB - $122Chris Brown - $32Dominick Davis - $50Thomas Jones - $33Tony Hollings - $2Anthony Thomas - $5Tried to pick reception heavy RBs at the mid level prices. Also secured 2 fairly secure back ups to my starters at the cheap slots. If I was going to take a back up, figured it should be my own. If Brown goes down before week 7 I'll probably be in trouble, but you have to count on a bit of luck, right?WR - $80Jimmy Smith - $28Plaxico Burress - $19Brandon Loyd - $17Charles Rogers - $9David Terrell - $2Justin Gage - $2Eric Parker - $2I tried to save $$ here and took a bunch of home run potential. With the best 3 credited each week, I figure I can piece together 3 solid performances. Week 7 is going to be scary with Burress and Loyd on bye.TE - $10Desmond Clark - $6Jerramy Stevens - $4Clark should get a good number of touches with the CHI WR situation if he stays healthy. Stevens is a cheap attempt at the home run.PK - $7Morten Anderson - $5Paul Edinger - $2I hate kickers! DT - $7Kansas City - $4Seattle - $3Defenses built around forcing mistakes and special teams scores which this system rewards more than stopping other teams.

I took a look at the sweet sixteen from last year's contest.I looked at the highest($$ wise) 3 players on each of the 16 finalists.$$$ Spent on Highest player on each team:High = 71Low = 26(highest $$ spent on one player - she made it to the elite 8)Ave = 53.62$$$ Spent on Highest 2 players on each team total:High = 111Low = 52Ave = 88$$$ Spent on Highest 3 players on each team total:High = 131Low = 77Ave = 111I don't have my numbers for this year in front of me, but I think my highest on any single player was around 35. My total for highest 2 was around 67. Highest 3 was around 100. So judging from last years contest, I didn't go for enough studs to be competitive. :eek:editted to add: I know the values are different this year(best players cost Mucho $$$) and it may wind up changing the strategie. I just thought this was interesting to see how the money was spent.

Holmes, Culpeper, and (hopefully) value at WR are obviously the keys to my team..

How should I report this $15,000 on my taxes next year?? :boxing:
This is the type of roster that won last year.

I studied the final 64 teams last year very carefully and this is what I found. There were 2 ways to go far in the contest last year.

1) Have a superstud like Holmes or LT carry your team and fill in with bargain talent around him. The problem of course was getting the correct bargain talent.

2) Get 2 bargain stud RB's like Ahman Green & Lewis. Remember last year those 2 guys were not among the top 5 RB going in drafts. They were generally considered end of 1st round beginning of 2nd round value and were priced that way in last years contest.

Having a top TE (Gonzalez) last year would get you pretty far because of the 2pt/rec rule. Of course he couldn't do it alone and you would have to use him to complement one of the 2 approaches above.

This year's contest is different because of the way the values were set. It will be interesting to see which if these 2 approaches work this years.

Well, I was going to post my roster, but I can't seem to find a link which would display it for me, as I can't remember my picks. Guess I'll have to wait until the first week's standings are posted.

All I do remember is that I picked QB=JPlummer/JDelhomme/BJohnson from the QBBC article, and DT=WAS/MIN from the DTBC article. If those theories are on the ball, CHA-CHING!!! :excited:

However, I'm in Arizona, and according to the rules, I'm forced to play only for fun  , unless of course the 2nd place person wants to cut a deal with me and split the pot (I'll take the cash, and you can have the projector). ;)

QBTom Brady/3 $17Jake Delhomme/3 $10Brad Johnson/8 $9QB's - I expect Brady and Delhomme to have a big year this year. Johnson has a easy schedule and also seem like good value. Having 2 qb's on bye on the same week is risky but I felt like Johnson is not a bad start. RBBrain Westbrook/5 $31Quentin Griffin/10 $20Lee Suggs/8 $15Tyrone Wheatly/10 $14Willis Magahee/3 $5RB's - nothing new here I was looking for value. I did have Duce Staley but after looking at everybody's elses roster last night I notice Griffin for only $20. I drop Duce for Griffin/Wheatly and the move allowed me to pick up Tom Brady. I thought it was worth it. Also I hoping that towards the end of the year Magahee busts loose.WRAndre Johnson/7 $31Plaxico Burress/7 $19Keyshawn Johnson/4 $17Deion Branch/3 $13Eddie Kennison/5 $11Jerry Rice/10 $4Freddie Mitchell/5 $2WR's - I wanted to spend more on WR's because I thougt Footballguys hyped up the stud RB theory a little too much and the RB's were over valued. I liked what I saw of A.Johnson at the end of last year and think he can finish top 10. Burress has had a good camp and is in a contract year. I don't know what it is but their is something about Key. Johnson teamed up with Vinny and Parcells that I like. I expect a breakout year for Branch this year and seems to be the #1 for NE. Kenninson is in a high scoring offense should put up decent numbers. Rice hofer.Mitchell - I like what I see of him. I don't think I need him starting right away. Could be huge if an injury occurs.TEFreddie Jones/6 $7Jim Kleinsasser/4 $5I don't know much about TE'sKMike Vanderjagt/6 $8Sebastian Janikowski/10 $4good value in vandy. No respect for K er'sTMMinnesota/4 $5Pittsburgh/7 $3Minn - looked good preseasonPitt - I like return game

Didn't participate last year, but of:Manning

LT2

Gonzo

Ahman Green

J Lewis

C Johnson

Only the first three were likely priced as studs.

I wasnt sure how to approach this so I broke down some numbers.

First I calculated the average points projected for the top 10 players at each position to get some idea of the value at each in this system.

This produced the following averages:

QB - 299 avg

RB - 263 avg

WR - 183 avg

TE - 85 avg

K - 128 avg

D - 143 avg.

Next I multipled the averages by the starters/bench at each position, then multiplied those totals against a normalization factor that would = 250.

This gave me the total $ to spend at each position:

QB - 54

RB - 57

WR - 42

TE - 23

K - 35

D - 39

This is the point where alarms were going off in my head - no way I would spend that much on kickers and defenses, and I had to spend more on RBs. But I decided to stick it out and see where it led me.

Starting from the bottom I realized even if I bought the two most expensive D's I would only be spending $19, so thats what I did.

New England $10

Baltimore $9

Allotted $39, spent $19, savings on defenses = 20

On to kickers and again I couldnt spend anywhere near the projection, so again I aimed high with:

Vanderjagt $8

Elam $7

Allotted $35, spent $15, savings on kickers = 20

TE's I dont have a feel for so I just took what felt good and trusted the numbers.

Crumpler $17

Witten $7

Allotted $23, spent $24, savings on TE's = (-1)

Next came QB's, and with $54 to spend I aimed high, grabbed Culpepper, then followed up with two guys with potential for the weeks Cpep bombed.

Culpepper $39

Palmer $8

Carr $6

Allotted $54, spent $55, savings on QB's = (-1)

Next were WR's - $42 to spend looked low but I wanted to spend my savings on RB's so I looked for value and potential.

Wayne $12

Stallworth $10

Rogers $9

Bennett $4

A. Davis $4

T. Taylor $3

Hall $2

Allotted $42, spent $42, savings on WR = 0

So finally at RB I had originally been allotted $57 but had saved $38 at other positions, so I shopped again for value and potential with my $95 and got:

Staley $37

C. Brown $32

Suggs $15

M. Williams $6

McGahee $5

Again with the Wheelhouse method (which I happened to use)

QB: 803 - $41

RB: 1052 - $109

WR: 1341 - $69

TE: 222 - $13

PK: 240 - $6

Def: 350 - $12

Total: 4013 points

projected points per dollar spent (PPDS): 16.05

PPDS per position

QB: 19.7

RB: 9.7

WR: 19.5

TE: 17.1

PK: 40

Def: 29.2
Barry Jive - where did you get your projection points? I have the same TE setup as you (Gates and Witten) and only have a projected point total of 133 points, not 222 that you have. Proj. points per FBG projections

Gates: 67

Witten: 66

I saw your values and my jaw dropped. I can't be sure, but I think you used a different points projection than me. The TE values should be the same and they are not.
I used VBD version R.Maybe I have a goof somewhere? I'll double check...

Edit to add:

Version R:

Witten 47-479-3 = 113

Gates 42-491-3 = 109

Did you remember the 1 pt per recption? Looks like you might have left that off. That's roughly the 40pt difference +/- some yard tweakage in the latest version.

Best I can recall (actually I recall upgrading my teams a bit but can't recall the specifics).QBs - Harrington - 7, B. Johnson - 9, Brady - 17 = 33RBs - T. Jones-33, Staley - 37, Westbrook - 31, Griffin - 20, Dunn - 27 = 148WRs - Parker - 2, Hilliard - 3, Ferguson - 4, Clayton - 4, Rogers - 9, Keyshawn - 17, Northcutt - 5 = 44TEs - Eric Johnson - 3, Witten - 7 = 10PK - Edinger - 2, Reed - 3 = 5Tm - Pitt - 3, Chicago - 3 = 6 I figured I needed some surprises to separate myself from the masses and I decide to go with the minimalist WR approach. If I hit on 2-3 of my extreme low value WRs then I put myself in contention.

Here is my team:

QB ($36)

Favre--$15

Pennington--$15

Rattay--$6

Wanted to go with 2 solid starters and a darkhorse. With the new rules, he plays in every game and a favorable schedule, I pegged Favre. I like Pennington this year and Rattay has a relatively easy schedule (if he stays as the starter) and could put up a monster week or two.

RB ($126)

Portis--$82

Suggs--$15

J. Jones--$15

Foster--$11

Pittman--$3

Went with 1 stud RB this year and worked in some other lower price players that could compliment Portis. Saw only one other guy taking Portis :bag:  , the Jansen injury hurts, but he can score Priest/LT2 numbers. Was leaning towards Betts early on, but did not know if he would make final roster. Picked Foster because Carolina plays SD in week #7 (Portis' bye week) and figured he'd get some good garbage time. Pittman's a rainy day RB, who will hopefully get a chance to play after he serves his suspension and can put up a 12-18 point game at just the right time.

WR ($59)

Ferguson--$4

Lloyd--$17

Branch--$13

Terrell--$2

Wayne--$12

Rogers--$9

Parker--$2

Went cheap and those that had value. Like everyone else, Rogers seems to be one of the best buys out there. We'll see if 3 can rise up each week and tread water with the rest of you.

TE ($10)

Witten--$7

LJ Smith--$3

Wanted to get Gates on here, but it was b/t he and an upgrade at a WR slot, so went with Smith instead. Like Witten in the Parcells/Carthon offense.

K ($5)

Graham--$2

Hanson--$3

Went Graham because he's in a potentially high scoring offense and he quietly had a decent year last year and Hanson, because he plays indoors.

DT ($14)

Baltimore--$9

Minnesota--$5

Debated b/t KC, Washington, Buffalo and Minnesota to go with Baltimore.

Here's my team - first timer, so rip it apart!

Code:
QB $34J Delhomme/3 $10.00	B Johnson/3 $6.00T Green/5                 $18.00RB $160J Lewis/6 $68.00	C Brown/9 $32.00	B Westbrook/5 $31.00	J Jones/4 $15.00T Wheatley/10 $14.00WR $32R Williams/4 $7.00	D Driver/9                $6.00	M Clayton/3 $4.00	A Davis/8 $4.00	I Hilliard/6 $3.00	B Engram/4 $3.00K Johnson/6 $5.00TE $8.00J Kliensasser/4 $5.00LJ Smith/5 $3.00PK $7K Brown/7 $2.00M Anderson/4 $5.00DF $9Minnesota/4 $5.00Kansas City/5 $4.00
QBs - went for consistant high scores at a value with Green, and think BJohnson was great value and JDelhomme was good value. Didn't watch bye weeks and so Green will have to carry me through week 3.RBs - Started with SAlexander, and kept cutting when I needed more $$ for other positions, ended up with JLewis as my "stud" Hopefully he will play all year. Still, spent quite a bit here with Brown and Westbrook (1 pnt per rec.). Wheatley may not get a lot, but hopefully a good game here and there, and JJones for later in the year.WRs - Went for extreme value/extremely cheap. RWilliams should come on for the Lions, DDriver will get a fair amount of catches and could blow up here and there, Clayton I'm not too sure about, was flip flopping him and DBennett and probably woulda switched it back if I had more time - I hope McCardell stays out or gets traded. Davis should get a fair amount of looks from Garcia. Hilliard and Engram for value, and KJohnson should get what Heap leaves over for him.TEs - I think Kliensasser will be used a lot this year, and Smith should get looks with Owens clearing out the DF.PKs - KBrown cause Hous. should put up good Offensive numbers, and MAnderson as a late addition when he got picked up by Minn.DF - Went for Minn - vastly improved DF, and ballhawking, and KC - hopefully Hall can run a few back just when I need a big score from someone.Did I do good???? I guess we'll find out soon. GL to all.Mike*Edited formatting

Advancing is key. Knowing how to skimp to advance is key. Early Byes with high % advancement for that week is good (3/5/6 in particular). Multiple byes in a position on any week is bad (8/9/10 in particular). Outscoring the competition at a position can easily get your team to advance. LT at week 10 on bye is fatal. ANY $50+ player past week 7 COULD be fatal if others don't step up.That said, anyone who could build a solid team with either Heap or Gonzo will be in excellent shape assuming they don't get hurt (and a hurt stud would kill any team, but I didn't spend $50+ on mine so I may have better depth). This move over any other can make or break a team. Almost any RB or WR can explode, and given wise choices and reasonable depth you SHOULD have your team covered in these departments. With an average TE scoring 3-5 points and an average week by Gonzo or Heap being 10 points, you get an immediate advantage over your competition. AND you only have to spend $20-$30 more to get this improvement. Show me this value at any other positionLast year TE's got 2 pts/rec and a lot of guys blew this off. Almost got me in the dance IF Heap's TD in mid season (week 8/9?) didn't get nullified by replay (on a HORRIBLE call!!! :hot: ) Worked last year and I'll try it again this year...Good luck to all! :football:

QB 46Vick 25Pennington 15Carr6 I couldn't be happier to see that NOBODY else has Vick. I have concerns about him in the WCO just like everybody else, but his main drawback is that his points are prolific but inconsistent. In this contest when he has a bad week it won't matter...I have safe backups. To elbow past 10000 people you have to swim upstream a bit, and I am happy to do that by owning Vick all by myself.RB 95Westbrook 31Suggs 15J.Jones 15Griffin 20T.Bell 14 Most of the "bargain" full-service RB's were priced in the low 30's, like CBrown and T.Jones. I handcuffed the Denver running game for 34 bucks and have protection against injury. Westbrook was a common choice for a good reason. I liked Jones and Suggs alot more before the deadline than after, but I still think Jones will be pretty good and hopefully Suggs doesn't have a disc problem. I knew everyone would have Griffin, and I see many owners do. I wanted to run a bit counter to try to separate myself and I was pleased to see that few people seemed to jump on Bell. I will take my chances with the Denver running game.WR 84Porter 21Burress 19Lloyd 17Stallworth 10Rogers 9Calico 6Parker 2 I didn't pay for a big stud but I only need three good games out of 7 guys. I hope Calico isn't a trap...he seems like a strong play and should be back soon. I was hoping his injury would scare alot of people off him. I was committed to Keyshawn until the last day and then I decided that he had little upside so I used a D switch to free up enough to upgrade to Burress. Fingers are crossed.TE 13Witten 7A.Gates 6Freddie Jones SHOULD have been priced at about 2-3 bucks, but at 7 I passed. I like both guys this year.K 6Kasay 4Graham 2I had Nedney and learned of his demise only a short time before the deadline to change, so I went with Kasay. Graham's O should provide plenty of chances with all their skill players. With no points for long FG, I saw no reason to splurge on K's.D 6SF 3Sea 3Thought Sea was a great value and they were a pick of mine from day one. I had to make room for Burress late and downgraded from Minny to SF. Probably should have spent more time on my D research but I didn't want to downgrade at other positions to hope I was guessing right on D.OVERALL: I am pretty pleased to be one of the few with Vick and the Den RB handcuff. The odds for any of us are poor, but I was happy to see the roster lists in these threads. I think I have good upside and I am glad to be different from many other FBG's. Good luck!

Prices were way different than this year. The winning team had Manning for $17 and Gonzo for $21. This year they are $32 and $39 and not worth drafted at that price. There is still a lot of luck involved so I think anyone can win the thing as long as they have a well-rounded team that doesn't get screwed on bye weeks, especially late.
