US Men's National Team (6 Viewers)

I feel bad for Claudio.

Glad these details are coming out.
Why do you feel bad for Claudio he contributed to this situation and if I was his Dad I would of told him when he tweaked his hammy in March to withdraw your name from consideration because you will not be healthy enough to play at the level that is expected and at 24 you will be guaranteed a spot and you will not have the qualification strain on your body. That is what a dad who knows what is expected in the World Cup should of told his son.

From random viral Twitter

Berhalter has a feud with Brooks
Berhalter has a feud with Miazga
Berhalter had a feud with McKennie
Berhalter now a feud with Gio
Berhalter has pissed off Pepi

IDK about you guys, but there is one constant in all of this.
Constant is young Diva players who think they know what is best and do not want to earn anything. Imagine these kids trying to play for Antonio Conte Son was crying that he got benched for Richarilson WTF players need to show up shut there mouth and show the coach they want to be on the team

Wow. What a day to be away from the computer. Spent the day with buddies watching NFL football. Came home to see all the drama.

Gio. Sigh. He's gonna be our Yann Gueho isn't he.(Literally just read an Athletic article about this French kid that was better than Mbappe and was expected to be France's future)

I can only hope that he takes this constructively as McKennie did with his infraction.

I always thought it was weird that GGG would bring on Morris when chasing a goal over a talent like Gio and his reasoning at the time certainly didn't make sense. The picture seems clearer now. GGG maybe did tell Gio to lie about the true reason for his benching because he didn't want this story out before the end of the WC at the very least. Gio tells his dad, his dad tells Wynalda, Wynalda comes out with his comments after the game, Claudio calls him and tells him to STFU because he knows the real reason is worse....

Just hope the US as a team can move on and be ready to forgive Gio, assuming he doesn't slack off or go diva going forward.

How is it possible that we're having this problem with Claudio's son. SMH. Claudio was the ultimate professional for the USMNT. Worked his *** off.

@RaeComm

Have only heard good things about Gio Reyna on the attitude front in Dortmund. Teammates heartbroken for him after the injury setbacks last season. Club has been judicious re his game time, working him back in but Edin Terzic conscious of not overdoing it.

Again this is based on covering him in the Bundesliga. Never a hint of anything other than a normal (but promising) young professional player going about his business at a big club. Obviously can’t speak for the USMNT situation as I don’t inhabit that world.

To clarify the story going around re: Gio There was NO player vote taken regarding his status with the team. The storyline of “13-12” is wrong confirmed to me just moments ago. There was a vote among the staff who worked for GB including fitness personnel & asst coaches.

lol it gets weirder. Maybe best to just chill for a while and let this get sorted out or blow over. Theres a strong energy for hottakes based more on love/hatred for the coach rather than on reasoned thoughts about this incident in a vacuum.

I can’t seem to find what you guys are all alluding to that Gio did, specifically (and allegedly). Can someone just spell it out or link it, please?
He was a slacker nit giving 110% on the practice pitch and during a friendly with a Qatari Club team.
Honestly, who cares. That’s a terrible reason not to give your team the best chance to win in the World Cup.
Team leaders noticed it also. Maybe read the articles and get all the subtext before jumping to assumptions.

You did ask "who cares" and it appears his teammates did care.

I can see it both ways but I am starting to lean to the side of the people who are saying that this came out because GGG is not coming back.

I wish we could find out for sure though, I hate the waiting...

Yedlin cared and well I don’t really care what Yedlin thinks. I made allusions to this back over the summer, but there’s been a divide between the class Euros and the MLSers at least in terms of tactics for awhile now.

To follow up, Twellman did not speak to a coach or player. Info he got came from the agents of three players.

Not that this indicates he is right or wrong, just adding some context.

Tend to agree, no reason to out this story so soon. It's not quite burning a bridge, but it's also not making new friends either.

You stated that it is a terrible reason to bench the player for lack of effort on the training ground than playing him which gives your team a better chance at victory. I guess you missed the memo that how you practice dictates your performance. My son's HS/Travel lacrosse coach has always had this policy if you do not work hard in practice you will be sitting for the game no matter the importance of the game; because the player is not bigger than the collective whole of the game.

If the USSF is going to re-hire Berhalter, they need to do it today for maximum hilarity

It is coming out because GGG was heavily criticized for Reyna not being on the pitch when he is easily one of the top 5 if not 3 talents on that team. He took heat after every game by the media on why Reyna did not see the pitch.

You assumed and stated that the coach intentionally made a decision that negatively impacted the team's "best chance to win in the World Cup." If the reports are even half true, it seems apparent that this player had no business being on the field against Wales in the World Cup.

yikes. After reading some more, it sounds like the lack of having defibrillators at the stadium may have been a big issue

Oh ok. I’ve read that - some of the later comments in this thread made it seem like we later found out he killed someone’s dog or something.

is Yedlin a class euro  one year as a spur probably ruined that

Hopefully Valencia keep this reasonable. 20-25 should see a bunch of teams interested

David Ornstein reports that USMNT midfielder Yunus Musah would be available for "north of €20 million" which seems like an absolute steal, particularly for Premier League clubs with plenty of money. Musah turned 20 while at the World Cup. Already has 23 caps with the USMNT.

To put a finer point on it, I've maintained for awhile that once you have numerous guys that have been exposed to Euro style tactics and coaching at the highest level, they're at best agnostic to tactics/coaches not at that level. One of the aspects to GGG's entire coaching time has been this divide especially since a number of the guys never came up through MLS. I don't think it should be lost that a number of these guys have now been coached by coaches who are at the top of the profession. Whether that ever gets verbalized is another matter (my guess is that it doesn't and you end up with Reyna incidents), but you can bet that that dynamic is at play between the players and GGG.

I am not sure I understand this.

If we assume the reports of what Gio did are true, are you saying Gio did this as a protest against GGG not being a good coach? Or are you saying Gio does not respect GGG enough to actually try in a friendly?

Either way, I don't have any idea how that makes Reyna right in this case.

GGG can be a poor coach and Gio can be a problem child. Those two things are not mutually exclusive by any means.

As an aside, I can probably point out a 1000 top players over the years who have problems in Europe with coaches at the top of their profession.

It happens in every sport.

No, I'm saying we are only getting one perspective of what happened and a colored one at that. I'd much rather hear CP's or Adams' or Dest's have to say than GGG.

Interesting...

Update: A U.S. Soccer spokesperson said the summit in which Berhalter participated [the one that the Reyna story leaked from] was supposed to be “explicitly off the record.”

I have no pony in this race so I am happily riding the fence.

This idea is meaningless IMO. It is 2022. If you speak to a room full of people, there is no such thing as "off the record". That may exist between a single reporter and a interviewee but when you talk to a room full of various people, that idea does not exist.

As such, I think both US Soccer and GGG absolutely knew this was going to get out and maybe it was intended that way, since they almost certainly knew the Athletic article was about to be published.

The fact that US Soccer seems to be backing GGG here makes me wonder whether they are going to consider extending him....

I still want a new voice, but I more just want to know which direction we are headed...

I believe Gio's version 1000% FWIW. It makes complete and total sense to me.

I was trying to find some connection to why he dogged it in a friendly, and GGG apparently telling him he would not be used much in the WC was what I was looking for. It made no sense that Gio out of the blue would dog it. That does not mean he is right, but it at least makes sense to me.

I don't have any idea what GGG thought he would gain by telling a young player that? You tell that to a Roldan who is there for support, not to a young player IMO.

Gio's version sounds true. Still makes him look bad, but nowhere near as bad as the version that became public over the past couple of days. Also makes Berhalter's failure to keep things private much worse.

it really makes sense for this generation of humans, not just athletes, that they shut down when told anything negative. it used to be you tell someone that they are on the outside looking in and they get motivated to prove you wrong and don’t sulk about it but those days are gone and coaches need to adapt.

I stayed away from the conspiracy theory nuts but in terms of what was reported by respected media members, his story is identical to what we heard with the one missing important piece of why he dogged it.

GGG looks bad for saying anything about this in public but leaving out the "why" is very poor IMO. Again, the "why" does not in any way exonerate Gio, but it gives important context.

I think all clear thinking people can acknowledge that Gio was in the wrong here and he is not going any where so I think his side of the story should be put to bed unless it flairs up again in the future.

I want to focus more on GGG. We all love to talk about the X's and O's for evaluating a coach but the fact remains that man management may be more important than ever.

We have always talked about how the team seems to play hard for GGG, but Gio's clear shot about how GGG tells everyone that these things stay in house is certainly going to resonate with many of the players I think. You can't preach one thing and then ignore at your own convenience.

I am still stuck on what GGG hoped to gain by telling Gio he was not going to play before the WC even started? Everyone knows Gio is volatile, that was never going to end well.

You're a guy with an injury history who worked hard to be fit for the WC and then are told you won't be playing much if at all before practices/scrimmages, but you know give it 110% against some scrub Qatari club side and risk injury again. Yeah, sure. Frankly that's as big as a misstep from GGG as releasing this info.

This is starting to feel like a politics thread. Everyone's opinions are so black and white.

I feel like there's enough blame here to go around. And it never should have gotten out.

I think only a couple of guys are doing the "I am right and one only party is wrong" dance. Most people seem to be fairly level headed in here and realize there were mistakes made on both sides.

I have no idea what this means for GGG (since US Soccer has not made a decision yet) but I have a strong feeling this is likely to motivate Gio quite a bit and that should be a good thing for the US in the future.

This seems like a *damned if you do damned if you don't* situation for the coach. If the story breaking now were Gio saying Berhalter never spoke with him or explained his role to him and he was completely blindsided, etc. - the coach would be getting crucified as badly if not worse right now. We don't know exactly what was said or how it was presented, but we do know the player's reaction, which was extremely unprofessional.

I am curious about this as well, along with why he wasn't planning on playing Gio?
Injury fears? Then don't bring him and site injury history.

His bench was shallow enough and to not only plan to NOT play one of your most creative players but tell him as much? None of it makes any sense to me. But half of what GGG doesn't make sense to me.

And Gio did not react well, but who of us would have in that position at that age?
