US Men's National Team (10 Viewers)

*Berhalter said today he expects to call in a few players who he has not yet called before for the upcoming friendlies.

*Miazga was pulled after only ten minutes today with an injury.

this is like watching a train wreck

@ChuckMe92Soccer

What a match for Carleton. He notches a tantalizing goal and hockey assist, but then gets a straight red for apparently something he said to the ref

@BrianSciaretta

Jesse Marsch’s Red Bull Salzburg still perfect (15 points/5 games) in the Austrian Bundesliga but now has a whopping +19 goal differential

@BrianSciaretta

Tim Weah picked up a muscle pull in training yesterday. Per this quote from Lille manager Christophe Galtier, it sounds as if he is rulled out through the international break. If true, no #USMNT or U.S. U-23 call-up for Weah

I believe on Wednesday we will see the roster released for the up coming friendlies.

As a rough count, looks like Yedlin, Adams, Weah will all be out.     Still looking for info on Miazga's injury.

Brooks should get called.  I can't remember if this would be his first call under Berhalter as he was hurt a bunch late last season.

Dest and Pomykal are the two most interesting possibilities for a first time call up for me.

if he doesn't call Dest in... :balling fists, clenching jaw:

Servania (Puerto Rico)

Ferreira (Colombia)
but servania has played for the US yutes, right? (eta: and not like we're going to lose him to PR)

and ferreira just got citizenship? (this guy, if good enough, would be lost)

....or do I have these guys confused?

I think Ned was just saying they are dual nats.  Both are almost certain to be US players if good enough.

It was interesting that Pomykal did not start for Dallas for the first time in a long time.  Some online speculated it was nothing more than giving him some rest.

really good interview here with Jesse Marsch.  Lots of goose bumps type quotes on Tyler Adams.

Also a cool piece of trivia in that Jesse is the first coach in Austrian Bundesliga history to win his first five games.

Reading the quotes about Adams gets me so hyped to see him back on the field.........for those that did not read the long interview here are the Adams pieces

ASN: I guess this modern age so many clubs are just focused in on youth development and there are a more opportunities for young players than 20-25 years ago. How much do you enjoy that? How challenging is that?. After coaching players like Tyler Adams, is there something about this generation of young players, not just American, about how ready are they for the top level? Are they more ready now than they used to be?

MARSCH: You mention Tyler [Adams]. He's probably the best example of that I've ever worked with. His hunger for knowledge, his hunger to get better, his fearlessness to play against the best teams and best players was like nothing I've ever seen. And that was part of being young but it was also in him. That was his nature as well.

ASN: Watching him, he seemed to fit in on a global scale, not just on an American scale. You saw him against some of the top Bundesliga clubs. He looked like he was right there with everybody.

MARSCH: He was an outlier even in Leipzig where there's countless good players and countless young players. He has a very special personality that he's not afraid of anything. And the more you give him, the more he wants. I was very careful not to oversell him in Leipzig because I wanted Tyler to be able to tell his own story. But I was preparing the people there that they were going to experience something different.

Once he came, I had one of the coaches say to me: "even after all the positive ways that you spoke about Tyler, he's exceeded it by miles." And that's kind of who Tyler is. And we have some players here in Salzburg that are exactly the same. That are young, incredibly talented, and they just believe in themselves and believe in their ability to get better. So that's fun. Those are fun projects.

ASN: When did you know Tyler was so special? In the Red Bull academy? When he got to the first team?

MARSCH: I think I think the first time I met Tyler I could sense that there was something different. Once he got out of Bradenton and came up and started training - when he was 16 - with us in March. After about a week of training with us we were like, wow. And if I were to criticize myself in an area of coaching Tyler, it was that we were a little bit too patient with him. We should have maybe taken off the handcuffs a little bit earlier.

he certainly seems to be making a good first impression

=====

“Zack is the perfect example of a modern goalkeeper: very good with both feet, very good in the air, well-developed technically and a very good communicator.” Lutz Pfannenstiel, Düsseldorf’s Sporting Director, on Zack Steffen

too bad the team is leaking a lot of goals so far.

doesn't sound like he's at fault necessarily, but that'll be a tough road ahead for his confidence I'd think.

Yeah I agree.

while it was cool he was named player of the week in week 1, the only time that happens for a goalkeeper is when you are under assault all game, which is not a long term positive for a goal keeper.

Colin Clark (capped by the US) has passed away at the young age of 35 after a heart attack.  He played for the Rapids for most of his career.

It is going to be an extraordinarily ugly day online tomorrow if we some how get the double shot of Dest starting in the Champions League and Dest not being called up for the latest US roster......

@TaylorTwellman

Dest, Sargent, Robinson, Pomykal. Are all expected to be on the roster. ESPN+ now #USOC2019

:thumbup:  😲  :excited:   :eek:   :welcome:   :popcorn:

my range of emotions right now.  Sure, we are still likely to lose both games but at least we have an eye on the future now.......

I am unsure if that is Miles Robinson or Antonee Robinson.   I think based on the other three players listed by Twellman, it may be Miles.

This would be a hell of time for Twellman to be wrong after breaking so many correct items these last few years....

I was reading some speculation today that if Tata did not leave Atlanta, Robinson would not have had his break out year he is having.

@DontTreadSoccer

Miles Robinson is something else. What a performance today. MOTM

well this is bizarre.  The Athletic is reporting that Nagbe has turned down multiple call ups, which is in contrast to him just saying recently he has not heard from US Soccer.  I don't have a subscription to the Athletic so I can only read the first paragraph

https://theathletic.com/1165883/2019/08/28/
I saw that too. Definitely bizarre...and needs follow up reporting by somebody to ask Nagbe and GG directly. "Multiple sources" sounds pretty official, but would be good to hear from the horses' mouths.

Fredo!

No Bradley or Jozy which was expected due to TFC games if memory serves.

Tenorio has a good article on the Athletic with Berhalter quotes on contacting dual-national guys.

I thnk the most telling portion of this quote is that Berhalter thinks there should be a structure in place for players to hear from the Federation; which says to me that today there isn't one.  Hopefully, they'll at least get him an international plan :)

Because of our limited pool, it’d be understandable that a fan would be excited about the potential of reaching outside of this and taking someone that’s a dual national. So I understand that. Our job, I believe, is to continue to make contact with these players. I’m speaking to players all the time that have dual national citizenship and talking to them about what our program is about, what we can offer the player, how we can help this player develop in his career. And we take that very seriously.”

How U.S. Soccer goes about doing that is still in flux, but Berhalter said he thinks a “structure” should be in place to ensure that players hear from the federation.

“Now, having said that, I’m not sure my role as the head coach of the men’s national team is to be reaching out to 16-year-olds and 15-year-olds,” he said. “But we should have a structure that will reach out to these players. And we should have a structure that can include these players in our national team programs. And at the end of the day, if we do that work, and a player decides he would rather play for another country, than we can live with it.

awesome!  I think this is one of those rare times that a constant uproar by the fan base is having an effect.

I also agree with him that unless it is right in front of him, that he himself does not need to be contacting the babies.  Mexico does not bother Tata with that, they have people in the fed that specialize in that stuff.

Can you summarize/clip the part of the article where he has to explain the talk of favoring MLS players too much?

You need to change this.

There is a ton of soccer content coming fast and furious there now. They have really emphasized and expanded it in the last few months. Lots of good international stuff.

I don't get bringing guzan in, other than being a vet for the younger guys... still think robles deserves it more- and there are definitely others in the league as well.

whispered excitement for brooks... don't want to hurt him with any rapid movements or loud talking. I saw zimmerman get repeatedly torched by pavon and the gals over the weekend... didn't give me a jumpy & quo feeling for him against mex. hooray dest! continued huh lovitz. and recent game I watched with cannon was back to inconsistent ups and downs.

nice to see lleget back in the mix- always liked him, even if I'm not sure what he gives that nips doesn't, which isn't exactly a ringing endorsement even though I like both players. speaking of- no nips? but at least we get more trapp and roldan. yay. bring me the head of alfredo morales's play has never really registered with me- neither here nor there. I liked a bit of the Yueill I've seen- but some inconsistencies there too. hopefully we get to see some pomy. but that MF needs some nagbe- I just don't get it and hope whatever gives with that atlantic article is further explained. it's a team and group of players that could his abilities.

interesting to see baird after his underwhelming gold cup- haven't seen him since for club to see if there's been some growth... anyboyd? gotta say, morris and zardoz have played their way in and deserve the call up, scoring goals regularly for their clubs. I wonder what the story is with boyd and why he was disappeared in the gold cup- we assume defensive liabilities, but the ability going forward hopefully outweighs that. wonder if he'll play.

I noticed Nips missing too.  At first I just assumed it was because DC was playing through the break like Toronto is, but they are not, so the exclusion is interesting considering he has been a mainstay for Berhalter.

seems like GGGGGG has taken guys looking to not overlap qualities/positions... if so, and if Lletget plays on the left (can't remember, tbh), maybe it's a one or the other relative to nips, and he's giving lletget a shot based on recent play.

I agree though- nips has been a mainstay, and has been a consistent bright spot for the us with effort and great movement forward (albeit, combined with too many mistakes on the final ball)
