US Men's National Team (19 Viewers)

If this was already posted please ignore.

Recently, US U17 international Matthew Olosunde committed to Duke University but was convinced to join Manchester United intsead because they were able to set him up in a program where he could play for the team and study at Oxford via online courses.

Matthew comes out of the Red Bull academy system in NY.

Duke has now lost Olosunde and Pulisic in quick fashion.

Europe do seem to love our cheap labor, since all these kids signing like mad over there are going on frees.

Lets hope some pan out in the next 5-7 years

Very impressive for Pulisic even considering how abundantly average the US team is.

To make the jump from U17 to the senior side in just 5 months is pretty special.
Incredible.   If he makes the jump for the game back in the states, think Klinsmann will try to cap him?  Why call him up for just the 2nd game if you're not going to try?

The whole situation is a little odd.

But in the past, JK has invited other young players to get acquainted with the system, practices etc, and not specifically to be capped.

While Pulisic is eligible to play for another country, I have not seen any indication that would happen so their might not be a huge rush to cap tie him but I would certainly not mind it if the situation warranted it in Columbus.

My guess on this whole thing is JK tells Dortmund he wants he for the break without saying if its for U23 or main squad.  Dortmund assumes it's for main squad and can't say no, so he's coming to America.  Somewhere in here, they then find out it's really for U23 and balk since they can for that.  To save face for everyone involved, JK then says it's for the main team for the second game.

Any guesses on the U23 lineup?
Best guess:

                   Horvath

Vincent    Miazga Zimmerman  Payne

           Acosta     Hyndman

Kiesewetter     Gil         Green

                     Morris

The Generation Adidas Cup is a multi tier tournament.

The first level has MLS academy teams competing against each other.   The winners move on to the Championship stage and the losers move onto the Premier stage.

The finals will include the MLS academy teams playing the Mexico U17 team, youth teams from Valencia, River Plate. FC Tokoyo, Universidad De Chile, Monterray and others.

It should give a ton of young American's a chance to compete against a lot of different styles.

Along with the top level academy teams, there is also a similar U12 tournament being run at the same time.

All being hosted at the massive FC Dallas training facility which has 17 fields.

Here is the organization of the groups

http://www.mlssoccer.com/generation-adidas-cup/2016

It is worth noting that both Atlanta United and LAFC will be fielding academy teams for the first time in the Premier stage.
Everyone says that FC Dallas has by far and away the best youth program in our country and they are starting to show it on the field.

The U16 FC Dallas side beat the U17 Mexican National Team this week.

===========

FRISCO - The FC Dallas U-16s are headed back to the Generation adidas Cup semifinals for the second-straight year.

With one win and one loss so far, FCD needed a win against the Mexico U-17 National Team and some help to advance to the knockout round and they did their part.

Playing with a stiff wind at their backs in the first half, Daniel Evans hit the crossbar with a long-range effort in the 20th minute, but FCD could not find the opening goal.

However, in the second half forward Jesus Ferreira found the go-ahead goal in the 46th minute latching on to a long ball before beating the goalie and slamming a shot into the net. Despite the howling wind, FCD remained resolute in defense and shut out the Mexican side who had a regulation win and shootout win in their first two matches.

Having won their match, eyes turned to the adjacent field where Valencia defeated Toronto FC 6-3 to secure the top spot for FC Dallas in the group with six points. It's the second year in a row FC Dallas has advanced to the semifinals which will be against Universidad de Chile inside Toyota Stadium at 8:15PM on Thursday night and admission is free and open to the public.

That was awesome.  Thanks for posting.  Remembered that it was in the middle of the jungle, but didn't know all that other stuff.

Can't believe I've had to watch Ruiz for 16 years.  Wish he'd just go away already.

Bacon has suffered a set back in his rehab.  It looks like the nerve problem he had surgery for has flared back up.

Werder is no longer talking about him for this season and are mentioning they hope he can be ready for next season.

Frankie checks in with a letter to the US Soccer players

====================================================

To all my bros on the current National Team getting ready to go up against Guatemala,

Be prepared for a battle. As I said in my quote on the locker room white board from our match at Guatemala in 2008, “Rise up fighting warriors. Rise and take your stance again. Because he who fights, and doesn’t stray, lives to fight another day.”

That’s a quote from a Bob Marley song that I twisted into my own words a little bit, but that’s what you need to do in Guatemala. You need to rise up. You need to be warriors. You need to stand up for each other.
The conditions are those that you’re not always used to: hot, humid, grass a little thick, fans doing some crazy stuff. Back in the day, for instance, the night before we played Guatemala in Mazatenango in 2000, all of a sudden we had a radio station outside of our hotel room blaring music. It was actually really good music, but it was blasting until the early hours of the morning and none of us could sleep that night. We were up and we heard everything.

It’s just different. It’s their place and they’re using every advantage they can to throw you off your game. What you need to concentrate on is yourselves and each other. You’re ready to put your mind in a different place when you step on that field together.

You’re with your nation. Your fans are behind you, your country is behind you, but they have theirs behind them as well. Who’s going to rise up? Who’s going to fight? Who’s going to not stray? Who’s not going to give in to the conditions, to the battle at hand? Who’s not going to run away and take the battle at hand face-on?

If you’re knocked down, the next guy is right there behind you. You need to fight for each other. When a player looks a little bit tired, you need to be the one that’s picking him up. You need to be the one that’s there for him, just like a tribe. This is what we do - and this is what you need to do here to win.

It’s going to take every bit of courage, every bit of momentum. Be prepared for the unexpected. We’re with you. We’re behind you. We are living vicariously through you.

Believe me, I wish I could be on that field right now with you guys. You always talk about the glory days, and those glory days can continue through you guys. My heart, my soul, everything I had when I played in Guatemala back in the days, it’s with you guys now. Go out, do what you can, and make sure you leave everything on the field. You don’t ever want to walk off a field thinking you could have given a little more.

As long as you do that, that’s all we can ask for. If you give that effort, the result will take care of itself. As long as you give everything you have for that next guy standing next to you, you’ll be alright.

Good luck bros. Rock and roll, and remember that we’re in this together. One Nation. One Team.

While acknowledging that JK could start almost anyone on the roster, I am leaning towards hoping to see a Gonzo Brooks pairing at CB.

I realize they don't have a lot of minutes together like say Gonzo and Besler, but I am worried that the US will have a difficult time breaking down a semi cautious Guat team and I think set pieces might be our best chance to nick a goal or 2.  With Gonzo and Brooks being our 2 best players in the air, and will both tower over most Guat players, this might be a good skill to exploit.

==========================================================

If there was ever a time to get our first WCQing win in Guat, this current Guat team seems ripe for the pickings as the whole Guat program has been a mess and they have already lost at home to T&T in this round.

Normally I am fine with the cliche 1 point on the road but it would be really nice to grab 3 and make this entire round so much easier to deal with.

I'm with you on Brooks, but Gonzo has serious limitations that we overlook.  Looking forward to the day when one of the younger kids displaces him.

But Gonzo has been a man on a mission since being shipped to MX this year.  I look for him to play well tonight and Tuesday.

The US Colombia series will have a slightly different format than a normal two leg series has.

If the teams are level after both games are complete (which factors in away goals), instead of going to PK's, they will go to an over time period, two 15 minute periods.

But just like normal time, away goals will also be factored into the over time.

So say both teams score once in OT, Colombia would go through.

Interesting.  I'm not sure I like that because potentially Columbia has an 30 extra minutes to get the elusive (or deciding) away goal.  So if Columbia scored in the extra time, then the US would have to score twice in the remaining extra time to advance.  That's just screwy.

Definitely neutralizes the impact of having the second leg at home.

This is how UEFA does it for the Champions League. Agree it counter balances against the advantage of playing the second leg at home.

Has anyone read about players being sent home?  In the past JK has brought more players than needed to these camps and then sends some back to their clubs at the end of the week.

This time he brought 26.5 (.5 is Pulisic) players including 4 keepers and I was wondering if he took the whole crew down to Guat.... If he did it may indicate that he is still concerned about a few injuries that players came into camp with.

God bless Ruiz!  He might miss the US leg.................. :lmao: :lmao:

=============================

Carlos Ruiz is probably the most important Guatemalan player to play the game. He is Guatemala's most-capped player ever (125), their highest scorer ever (59), and has been a key piece since 1998, when he debuted as a nineteen year-old, until now, at the ripe age of 36. The USMNT have two qualifying games against Guatemala this month, a home and away series with a first game in Guatemala City (March 25th) and a return trip to Columbus, Ohio (March 29th). That second leg in Columbus just got a bit easier for the Nats, though, as it appears Carlos Ruiz cannot leave the country at the moment because he didn't pay his rent. Yep.

Normally, I'd expect to see something like this in The Sun, but the news is coming from the Guatemalan soccer federation's website. Ruiz's legal troubles stemming from missed payment on rent are actually keeping him within Guatemalan borders. It does appear that he is able to play the game in Guatemala City, but going to the U.S. is out of the question at the moment.

All of this begs the question: What did Ruiz spend that money on? He's had a long and successful career in the western hemisphere, making stops in MLS at LA Galaxy, FC Dallas, Toronto FC, Philadelphia Union, and D.C. United, in addition to playing for Veracruz and Puebla in Liga MX, Aris in Greece, Olimpia in Paraguary, and his home club Municipal (with whom he currently plays). Ruiz is the big man on the block in Guatemala. Did he want a Bentley? Gold leaf in this toothpaste? A sizable collection of WWE merchandise featuring memorabilia from wrestling's greatest heels, of which school he was a spiritual descendant with his below-the-belt play in MLS? Inquiring minds want to know.

Can't find odds for this game at Oddschecker.

However, was surprised to find out the US is a slight favorite vs Colombia in the Copa:  USA 17.5/10 compared to Colombia 19/10.
