US Men's National Team (9 Viewers)

======================

United States forward Aron Johannsson has left Bremen to focus on his rehab training in his native Iceland, Bundesliga club Werder Bremen have announced.

Johannsson, 25, joined Bremen from AZ Alkmaar last summer, but was limited to only six appearances and two goals for the Bundesliga club until he was ruled out with hip and groin problems last September.

He needed to undergo surgery in late October, and was expected back on the pitch in January. However, his recovery did not go according to plan and last week Bremen ruled out the attacker for the rest of the season.

On Friday, the Bundesliga strugglers announced Johannsson has on his own request left Bremen for Iceland, where he will continue his rehab training on what the club said was a "nerve irritation in the region of his right hip."

"We've met Aron's desire to continue his rehab training in Iceland in the upcoming weeks," Bremen CEO Thomas Eichin was quoted on the official club website. "In close coordination with our medical department he will continue his rehab program and work with a physiotherapist he has known since his youth."

The Alabama-born player was raised in Iceland after his parents had finished university in the United States. Eichin explained the club hoped the change of scenery and reunion with his family can help Johannsson regain full fitness.

"You should not forget the psychological aspect. We hope that the closeness to his family will have a positive effect on his recovery process," he said.

Wow. After watching Miazga look questionable for the U23s I never would have guess he would go the full 90 for Chelski yesterday.

I went to the NE Red Bull game last night.

I decided to focus on Dax.

I think more than anyone else, he can approximate what Beckerman does for US with a little more mobility.

I would reduce his responsibilities at the Nats level to just sit in front of back four and bite every ankle that comes near him.

I thought Miazga was very good, looked like he belonged, calm and skillful. He played because of a Cahill training injury. I hope he gets another chance and we see him under some real pressure.

How sure are you guys that the CBA covers the USWNT/US Soccer dispute?  I have seen a dozen reports/stories on it and have yet to see anyone suggest it's relevant.  Is this just more crappy reporting on yet another subject, or am I missing something?

@wdcrobPart of the case Kessler presented was that the current CBA (which is some sort of extension of the previous CBA) is illegal.

There has not been much information on that specific point as the media latched on to the revenue numbers and then starting shooting some big holes in the case with the finding of the missing Copa revenue and the assumption that the womens revenue was based on an Olympic gold and long victory tour.

The other item that has received a lot of press is the fact that US Soccer is paying the NWSL salaries which was left out of the numbers that Kessler released.

The last point is by far the most interesting to me.

The other interesting thing is that the USMNT and USWNT tv deals are bundled.  Over a 4 year cycle, what is that worth? Also think about the Spanish language viewers for USA / MEX when playing in the U.S.  That's got to be worth some coin.

Anyone hazard a guess on the ratio if value here? 80/20? 75/25?  If world cup tv packages are separate, then it might be even higher.

@The Z Machine

Here is some info to consider for your questions

* Ignore the WC TV package money.  That money is a direct negotiation between the TV provider and FIFA.  US Soccer is not involved

* The TV contract that is in play is a complicated one because SUM bundles MLS, and the national teams together.

* The current TV contract is a $90m per year contract.  Roughly $70m goes to MLS and $20m goes to US Soccer

* The TV contract covers both English and Spanish coverage

* The US Soccer financial statement does not break that revenue apart to show whom gets what.   I posted some information on the disparity in TV viewers between the two teams here if interested

There is a case being litigated in Illinois right now that covers this. The USWNT signed a Memorandum of Understanding that the Fed says extended the USWNT CBA until the end of this year(I beleive). The women are arguing that the CBA is not valid any longer even though they signed the MOU. That case should be getting ruled on shortly(in the next few weeks). That ruling, I believe even though i am not a lawyer, will be key to whether this grievance gets more momentum.

BTW, both Bedoya and Jozy were stupid to post anything about the DUI, more so because they un-funny.  If you're going to be insulting and immature at least be funny about it.

I thought Jozy's at least was pretty funny.  I know there is the uber narrative that the two national teams should support one another.  And I generally think that's true.  But Abby is a very outspoken person.  That big personality made her a great player.  I think she can take a few burns.  Ale, who is of Columbian descent, found Abby's comments xenophobic.  As someone who has "beefed" with Ale on Twitter before :puffs out chest:, I know he can take things a bit personally.

Anyone know why Shea wasn't in the last USMNT camp?  Could he possibly be our best LB option going forward?

If we could pencil in a regular LB going forward it would make me so happy.  I don't want Fab playing LB, I want him at LM and attacking.  I think that is probably Shea's best position also, but he's playing LB for OCFC so maybe he can learn the position.

Are you talking about the January camp?  I think he was hurt.

In the same game, Brek got a yellow card on an awful scissors tackle from behind that could easily be a red, and gave up a penalty on a handball.  He also made a deft pass that drew a penalty against Portland.  It was the full Brek Shea experience.

My take is that Brek has a place in camp if we can afford a place for a guy that we would only use as an impact substitute.  He's one of only a handful of American players who have the knack for making big plays that change games.  But he's also a guy who is very, very difficult to trust for 90 minutes game in, game out.

I've always thought there was a place for him as a sub for those very reasons.  JK always litters the roster with non-impact, almost useless players...Brek's skillset has a time and place, as limited as it may be.

I saw all of this and I agree.  But hopefully he's still growing into the role.  At least he plays LB for his club, which means JK thinks he's perfect for any position other than LB.

lol brek.

because they need more guys who can't trap but can run fast... sometimes.
Speaking of touch, did you see the Zardoz should have been goal from this weekend?  Cross from Lletget came in from left hard and mid thigh height, and Zardoz trapped it well and made a great shot that was somehow saved by the GK.  Starts at the 2:00 mark of this video.

Is it feasible (not saying they would or should) for US Soccer to separate the mens and womens programs from a business point of view and then let them negotiate based on specific revenue?

I know Landon came under some heat this week because he took the stance of being for "fair pay" but not "equal pay" and that it should be based on revenue.

I have been looking at MLS box scores and I have been noticed a lot of names I don't recognize.

The good news is that many of these new players appear to be young americans who have come through the academies.  I believe this off season saw the largest home grown class ever signed so I hope this is the start of a constant flow of young players into the league.

Typically when MLS has turn over, it tends to be other MLS players who take the spot but if these young kids are pushing for spots against the vets because of quality (and not just because they are cheap) this is a very positive sign that the engine is starting to flow.

Brek probably scored the two prettiest USMNT goals of 2015 against Chile and Switzerland.

We don't have a great option at LB, so I guess it depends on what you're looking for.  Shea is more technical that Yedlin.  He's not as fast, but he's less of a liability in the air.  And he's a much more dangerous offensive player than Yedlin.  So if the competition is Ream, Castillo, and Villafana (who JK may not rate at all for all I know), I'm not sure we can rule Brek out.  Again, I don't think he's consistent enough to start games that matter, but he apparently was a big part of Orlando's success last year.  They really fell apart without him.

I haven't seen him play for club at all. for the US... he's been a mess and a liability defensively. ball watches and is unaware of his positioning, letting guys routinely ghost in behind him. yedlin appears to have worked most of those kinks out in one year in the EPL. brek also doesn't seem to know the "right" ball to play more often than not. still love the explosion he brings, and yeah- an option off the bench or against a team like SVG where you don't have to worry too much about positioning or getting caught.

I found this trivia interesting.  At 20 Miazga is only the 6th youngest US player to play in the EPL.

Youngest Americans in EPL:PLAYER, TEAM (AGE)1 Jonathan Spector, Manchester United (18 Years, 5 Months)2 Johann Smith, Bolton Wanderers (19 Years, 6 Months)3 Jemal Johnson, Blackburn Rovers (19 Years, 8 Months)4 Jozy Altidore, Hull City (19 Years, 9 Months)5 *Paul Rachubka, Manchester United (19 Years, 9 Months)6 Matt Miazga, Chelsea (20 Years, 8 Months)7 DeAndre Yedlin, Tottenham (21 Years, 9 Months)8 Eric Lichaj, Aston Villa (21 Years, 11 Months)9 Benny Feilhaber, Derby County (22 Years, 7 Months)10 Brek Shea, Stoke City (22 Years 11 Months)*England youth international
