US Men's National Team (5 Viewers)

4-4-2

                       Pulisic/Wood         Deuce/Wood

                                       Nagbe

                    Bradley                       Jones/Bedoya

                                        Cameron

Fab                  Brooks              Birnbaum           Yedlin

                                      Guzan

but that's asking and expecting a LOT from berny. feel the birn.

4-4-2, but I'd see it more of a 4-3-3 with a lot of fluidity.

In most countries this is true but as you know we are very unique.  Many teams beyond US and Mexico will have huge followings in the stadiums because of our melting pot.
:goodposting:

Only game I've ever been to for the US where there WASN'T a numerical advantage for the other team was T&T. in Connecticut. they don't even allow light skinned black people there, let alone fuzzy ferners.

Yet the US has a very strong home record against all those CA teams in meaningful matches (including Mexico).

I bet USA could outdraw at least half of the field in the Copa. There aren't enough Uruguayans, Costa Ricans, etc to make it happen. Brazilians and Mexicans? Sure.

Post 1994 WC in official tournaments and WCQs:

In the US:  USA 5 (1) 4 Mexico

In Mexico:  USA 0 (3) 2 Mexico

Neutral Sites:  USA 1 (1) 0 Mexico

So overall... USA 6 (5) 6 Mexico

And worth noting that three of the four losses to Mexico in the US were in LA.

Also worth nothing that the US has won all four WCQs in Columbus (02/06/10/14) by identical 2-0 scores.

You are absolutely right.

But it is worth acknowledging that those meaningful games are qualifiers which we hand pick the stadiums and control the tickets.  Our recent Gold Cup record, in which we lose control of stadiums and tickets, shows a few more holes.

Also, we are likely to only face 1 CA team in the tournament, and that is Costa Rica (of which we will have no real issues with home field, as they typically just have small pockets of fans)

If we win the group we likely play Ecuador, if we come in second, we get Brazil.  If we somehow get past the knockout game, it should be either Argie or Uruguay waiting (with a chance of Mexico).

I think its a mistake to think of Nagbe as a #10.  I think he's talented enough for that position, but I don't think it's natural for him.  And keeping him that high limits his touches on the ball.

yeah- I mentioned the "fluid" part. I'd see him out wide more often than not... in fact- yeah- good point... just switch him and Caillou.

Agreed. Ideally I think he plays along side Bradley in the center, with Bradley dropping deeper to link play from the back and Nagbe linking play to the front and wings.

But trelying on Zardoz, Bedoya or Zusi or a 17 year old to provide creative sparks from either wing doesn't seem like a great game plan either. This is why I think Nagbe gets pushed forward in a 5 man midfield.

The US has played Bolivia 6 times, all in the 90's.  The US has never won.  Of course Bolivia back them was FAR better than the Bolivia of recent times.

May 1993: 0-0 in Fullerton
February 1994: 1-1 in Miami
March 1994: 2-2 in Dallas
July 1995: 0-1 in Paysandu
December 1996: 0-2 in DC
January 1999: 0-0 in Santa Cruz

99 Confed Cup semi.  Mexico won in ET (I counted the Copa win for the US as a draw as well).

I think I read we have never beaten a non CONCACAF team in a knockout round game in either the WC or Copa?  It was Mexico both times we did it :)

Probably more than half.  A lot is location dependent.  If we stay away from Florida we should easily out draw Colombian fans.  Or stay away from the east coast corridor for Jamaica, things like that.

Looking at the group stage, we got good locations for our opponents.  We should have strong support assuming enough people are buying tickets.

Has anyone heard how ticket sales are going?

Stiker and RW are still big question marks.  I think Deuce plays best with a strike partner, but the team plays best in a 4-3-3.  Wood isn't as good in the 18 as Deuce (or Jozy for that matter), but is far more useful even when he doesn't score goals.  Pulisic might be worth a look on the right, but I'm reluctant to ask too much of him when he's comfortable on the left.  For 2018, I suspect we might see Kekuta Manneh at LW and Pulisic at RW.
I'd feel comfortable with Fab at RW. He's as two-footed as it gets.

4-4-2

We used to joke that DC United could stick an orange traffic cone in front of goal and it would still score 20 goals as Etcheverry and Moreno banked balls in like they did with Diaz Arce and Rocket Roy.  Zardes reminded me of that tonight.

Hope the US doesn't pay too much attention to this one.  Bolivia obviously out there trying to get through 90 minutes without getting hurt ahead of next week.

Well, it's Bolivia, but this is the prettiest soccer the US has played in a long time.
It is.  But there's zero pressure on the ball.  Guys standing wide open between the lines to receive every pass.

Bobby Wood putting a stake in the ground and peeing on it to mark his territory IMO.  Going to be hard to take him out of the lineup with everything he's doing.

I know Nagbe is relatively new to the USMNT, but can we stop pretending he's a young up-and-comer?  He's almost 26.
I feel like the announcer caught himself just short of saying that combo was a glimpse of the future before he remembered that Nagbe is almost a decade older than Pulisic.

Dammit. Completely unaware of the game.  Out all day and just caught up on the CL game. Doesn't sound like there's much to make from this,  good to hear Cam saw mins,  And Pulisic netting a goal. 17####ing years old. Hfs.

And the newcomer Nagbe should be the face of Us soccer for years to come.

Never thought I would say this but I think PR was better than Bolivia.  At least they seem to try.

The jump from Bolivia to Colombia should be enormous.   A draw would be a respectable result for me, even at home.

The irony being that those guys are Bolivian. It's all a flat circle, man.

Got to watch the second half this afternoon. Not much to add but when 'the kid' got his goal I got goosebumps. Damn he's young and yet so talented.

Do we have a good nickname for Pulisic? This should be a goal before the end of the Copa. But he needs a good one.

I'm fearful the coaches will be like the commentators and think Zardes played well yesterday.  Not sure I've seen a less impressive 2 goal performance.

I was looking through my favorited youtubes for a certain video yesterday and found this one I had saved years ago - Pulisic
This is a great vid.  I think it was posted on here last year (with out the sound track part).

His skill level was so obvious even at ten years old.

Twellman was trying to say yesterday that if he had remained in the US he might not have progressed through an MLS acad my system as fast as he did through Dortmunds youth teams because of his size but I find that laughable.  If the completely clueless Revs could see the talent in a smaller Diego Fagundez, any team would have recognized Pulisic's skill level.

I think most of us realize Pulisic is the next big thing for American soccer...the only question is just how big of a star he will become.  Are we talking moderate European success a la McBride and Deuce or are we talking top 10 player in the world success?

Being so young, If he can stay healthy he should be able to exceed Deuce and Mcbride as they came over relatively late IN their careers. But that doesnt automatically put him IN top 10 worldwide position either. And as much as I like what Ive seen so far from him, theres nothing Ive seen yet that tells me hes top 10 quality (with the obvious caveat being his age)
