US Men's National Team (23 Viewers)

I am going to read the entire thread starting where the game started.  I stayed out all night since I was other wise occupied sprinting around my pool table screaming "goallllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!"

                                        Turner

Yedlin         McKenzie            Robinson            Robinson

                                     Adams

                  Aaronson               Acosta

      Gio                         Pepi                               CP

Weston needs to earn his spot back. IMO, Brooks has lost his until we see otherwise.  Dest needs to show some toughness.
I was about to post mine.

Musah for Acosta. Dest over Yedlin.

Wow.  What a turnaround.  Killed it with not one primadona out there.  That literally looked like a bunch of bench players tired of sitting on the bench.  There was no miracle tactical change.  Just players wanting to play.
I wholeheartedly agree. Really not liking some of the play and attitude and lack of effort we saw this window from some of the supposed world-class talent. Hopefully it's a wake-up call for them.

And give GGG credit for putting Pepi on the team. That wasn't a slam dunk necessarily.

FYI, if you're looking to answer the question of "has Gregg lost the team?"  The answer is a resounding no.  The heart these kids showed in that second half was amazing.  They worked their ### off.  GGG made a mistake with the formation change.  Once we changed back to 4-3-3 we were dominant this game.

Hope Christian only has a small knock.  We need him healthy to make this run.

Pepi might have won the 9 spot tonight.

Jedi solidified the LB spot.

Brooks might be a backup after tonight.
He hasnt lost the non superstars at least...

Yeah, I dont hate Musah for Acosta. He should certainly get a shot.

I think Dest is soft. Incredibly talented, but he needs to show some spine for me to trust him. Yedlin is far from perfect (as he showed getting torched by Davies) but I trust he'll give effort.

We're going to continue to see all of the main characters in the pool get minutes.  None of them are going away.  Brooks, Sarge, Dest, etc.  Everyone will continue to play a part.

3 games a window?!  Yeah, we're gonna need all hands on deck.

However, in a must win game now?  Some of those names might've just changed.

Ugly as hell but you tell any of us the first window is going to include 2 road games and...

  • Pulisic unavailable for half of the possible minutes
  • Dest unavailable for half of the possible minutes
  • Reyna unavailable for 2/3 of the possible minutes
  • McKinnie unavailable for 2/3 of the possible minutes
...and then tell us we were getting 5pts and +3 GD out of it and we would all have been THRILLED by that outcome.
Yeah but what about GGG totally ####### up his starting lineups?

And sands should never see the field minus 8 other injuries. Wow he looked out of his league
He did, but I think that's because he was played at CDM.  He looked more than up for this level while playing the center of a back three in the Gold Cup.  IF we go back 3 again, then I'd give him a look there, but yeah.... don't think he should see midfield minutes again.

MOTM - has to be Pepi

Man of the first 3 matches - Miles for me.  I’m totally biased as my avatar will attest but dude went from fringe part of the 23 to maybe the 2nd or 3rd name on the team sheet.  Meteoric rise for the kid.

ETA - that may be too generous but he’s pretty much an auto-start and who knows what happens with Snacks

Sarge should be nothing more than a sub, he really does has not shown me anything.

As big of a Brooks fan as I have been, after today he should also be a sub until he can show more fire.

What kind of Alpha Boss Stud play would it be for Berhalter to roll out the team that finished this game for the next Qually?

Brooks, Dest, Weston, Pulisic, Weah, Musah?  You want in?  Earn it with some sub appearances.  Show that you can connect with each other as a unit.

Sarge may have lost his spot unless he tears up the next month at Norwich.

Zardes will be healthy(hopefully) next window and I thought Pefok was better than Sarge.  Given today, how do you keep Pepi out of the team?  I doubt we bring 4 strikers to the next window.

I'm still Dest, Musah and Swag. But I'm ok sitting one of the MFs for Aaronson. that said, Honduras pushed him around pretty easily.

Man of the cycle to me was Aaronson. Really showed his value as a super sub and finisher.

I have to say....  Miles Robinson is playing some of the best CB that I've ever seen for the USMNT.  Now, obviously this is a small sample size still and he'll need to do this for the next half decade+ to get his name mentioned with Boca, Pope, or Balboa, but he has the game for it.

I see absolutely no possible reason he's not in a top 5 league this winter.  I think he has the game to play for a UCL challenging side IMO.

yep and yep.

I think Brooks showed fire. But he was a mess challenging non dangerous players too high up the field. again. bmav pointed it out earlier today, and it's something I've noticed with him before...but the last couple games have only gotten worse. between Miles, McKenzie and Zimm, we're in ok shape in the CB position.

Things we never thought we’d say.

He's our best player right now.  For three months he's barely made a mistake.

I would have zero problem with this except CP - don’t think you can do that to your captain and consensus best player who went out with an injury.

huh? there was a tactical change.

maybe wasn't a miracle, but once the change happened at the half, even their poor touches couldn't put them in as much trouble as they were in in the first half. the players responded with more urgency, sure...but they were up a creek without a paddle until the tactic changed.

Any one else think that Turner's feet saw WAAAAY too much of the ball today?   He makes me so nervous with every touch.   And I love the guy as a keeper but for gods sake pass to any one else please....

Jedi and Pepi earned starting spots today.  Can't leave them off.  Ib don't have an issue sitting Dest until he shows he can pay defense at right back. Not sure who to pair with Miles at CB. I'd likely roll out Brooks again but he would have a short leash.

Teams are going to start pressing him hard now -- he's been shaky enough to invite it.

I think Ant was already the defacto LB...just GGG trying to shake this out tactically, and I guess Bello made sense to him back there with this formation.

Dest, Miles, ...McKenzie/Zimm/Brooks, Ant

It was almost like the land of misfits out there trying to prove that the super stars  are what is wrong with the team and not vice versa like every one thought.

And does Acosta put in the ugliest, hardest working, concacafing shifts of any player we have?  I do wish he was a little more consistent on the ball but you can't complain about effort.

I wonder how many touches he had today?  It was the most I have seen for the US for sure.   But I swear in at least a 1/3rd of the passes, it was not needed to bring him into the play.

No real yips, but no real confidence either and at his age and late start in the sport, I don't foresee his feet getting too much better.

Brooks though. his central MFs didn't do him any favors by making him have to decide between covering space or what should have been their men, but... ugh. and he's just not fast enough to recover by making wrong decisions.

And to be honest, the US may need to roll around in the mud a lot moving forward, and he's so great for that.

For those looking for a partner for Miles, I think Richards is going to be a stud.

The fact that Miles can play both sides of the CB spot with zero down side really makes him valuable.  He needs to add a little more solid line breaking passing to his game to go to the next level but even if this is he peak, I love it.

if any one player has profited the most by no VAR and looser reffing... he's been a walking yellow card that inexplicably hasn't been called.

I agree…I’ll also say this window showed why Man City were interested in Jedi as a speculative homegrown play over the summer.  Their elite athleticism really showed through in the last 30 minutes especially as Honduras melted.

Pepi isn’t long for Dallas either.  He just knows how to find space in the box and is at least passible in holdup play.

And that was the pre-injury Llegett as well.  He was direct then and willing to take chances and that half was really this first time since then that he’s played like that.  Hope it continues because that’s what’s required as an 8 in the 4-3-3.

More than anything though, Pepi consistently occupied two+ defenders and opened space for other.  If he isn’t an auto-start from now on, I don’t know what to say.  Honduras couldn’t handle him from the start and once they pulled the CB, it was a no contest.

Richards. of course.

of course we had been talking about how much depth we had a wing coming into this...but there seems to be good depth at CB. st least as of this minute.

did the ref even give one yellow card tonight?  I swear concacaf refs are the most conservative in the world when it comes to yellow cards given the chicanery that goes on in this region.

Here's a legit starting team -- one many of us would have named for this game a month ago (Adams aside) -- and NONE of these players were on the field at the end of the game.

Steffan

Cannon -- Zimmerman Brooks -- Dest

Gio Musah Weston

Weah Sarge Pulisic

I would even go as far to switch out Sargent for Zardes who is likely to be healthy soon.
