Flukey shanked clear that went in for an own goal and a flukey save against his own player by Pukstas. Otherwise fairly even.

To me, battle of shape and the second ball... Which have favored URU.

US was sloppy in the rare moves forward early on. URU was clean- their skill players were just better than ours

That's the difference in the game to me.
 
It's too bad, because we've seen the US consistently much better than this and URU wasn't dominant or scary as a team. The US picked the wrong time to lay a collective egg.
 
And credit to URU... They shut down all of what the US had been doing well... The clever ball inside in the seams leading to a ball to numbers in space on the flanks. Hardly saw that at all today.
 
between this and Toney's suspension, we may have gotten lucky Flo made a decision when he did

Bad news for Tammy Abraham. It’s ACL injury for English striker on final game of the season with AS Roma, Sky Sport are reporting. #Abraham Waiting for club statement indications, Sky report that he’d be out until the end of the year, November/December.
 
Just watched - frustrating loss. We didn’t control the game but I feel comfortable saying we were the better side save two horrible defensive blunders. Not by a lot but enough where it was right there for us. No clue what Che was doing on the first goal and Wynder - well, that was just horrible.

After Cade had the great chance that he smashed straight into Pukstas (the only player that could keep it out of the goal) I got very frustrated. :)

I don't have too many comments other than Uruguay deserved the win but imo were not the better team on the whole. The quarter finals clearly seem to be a hurdle this age group always fails at.

As always, I usually am more concerned about who can move on and help the senior side. With so much of our senior side coming into their prime, even with the obvious talent on the U20 team, we may see less than usual make an impact.
 
A day later, What a bummer that u20 game was. So... Meh.

Granted, they hadn't really played anybody tippy top yet, but they had been so consistent and dominant... My expectations were raised. And then that. Against a team we all agree we're just fine, but not scary talented or dictating play. The US just couldn't elevate when it needed to and when the path forward was so wide open. Bleh.

I've started to type this out a few times and then withdrew.

I've been a Varas fan to this point, but I think he royally effed up this match. The idea of running out a 2-man midfield with McGlynn can work against weak sides but is insanity against Uruguay and we got run over because of it. Starting Wolff out of position as a winger, Luna out of position as a false 9, and Halliday as a wing back is just dumb. If you were hell bent on this formation, call a roster that fits it.

And what irritates me most is even after it was so obviously flawed, we subbed out Wolff for Paredes and made no formation changes. Then we subbed out Halliday for Pukstas and again made no structural changes (Pukstas spent 15 minutes playing RWB ffs). It showed exceptional stubbornness to do that. By the time we finally fixed the structural flaws, the game was gone. This was a tactical loss as much as anything.

I haven't watched enough of them to know what their preferred formation is, or even preferred positions... But I kept saying while watching how they were the losing battle of shape/2nd balls and your post helps clarify why that was- thanks. Ugh.

And both guys you mentioned- Wolff and Halliday- were dreadful. Being out of position helps explain some of that. And did I see that Edelman didn't start? Crazy choice, if so. And none of it is helped if we get off-day-oops Cade and Luna flailing any chances.

And let's not forget URU was coming off a 10man nail biter exhausting game 2 days prior, while the US breezed through theirs 4 days earlier. But it was URU who looked fresher, hungrier and frostier.

Oh get your cleaver ready. I firmly believe that's the plan with the rotation of interim managers coming through. Just waiting long enough for no one else to hire him while others get hired leaving only him. "Well we tried. And Greg knows the American player and can lead us out at home".

I hope he's got some good help on his agent team, not just his dad. This just strikes me as a very difficult situation for him and Chelsea. The club has probably accepted the fact they will take a massive discount on the sale price, and the player knows he's taking a paycut, but how deep will either go? And he's still not exactly cheap, even at massively discounted rates. Its hard to think of a situation where the competition is more his level in terms of minutes, but the finances work for a guy with his injury record and lack of production at club level over the past couple seasons. I'm starting to think it might not be terrible for him to look to MLS. He'd be a huge draw worthy of substantial investment and the level of competition might not be too terribly out of balance for him. It would be a huge hit to his ego though and would probably be seen as a failure.
