Koln would be pretty solid if he could play. They finished 7th and 11th the last 2 years.

Rayo Vallecano 11th and 12th but were promoted 2 years ago.

Not sure if Rayo can sustain this though. The manager that brought them up and kept them up - Andoni Iraola - moved to Bournemouth this summer.

But either spot would be a pretty good landing for Cannon.

Any spot that actually pays the poor guy would be better. What an absolute disastor his previous team was finacially. I think Dallas is still waiting on some money.
 
Wyno is a massive ****.

but that guy could ball. him and my favorite ever US player Tab... those guys would hold their own on this team. Ernie was on that team too, no? Wyno... before Balo, would've started for the US's current team.
 
Paulo Rudisill (06) has passed up a home grown deal with LAG and signed with Feyenoord. He was solid in the CONCACAF U17 and he should be part of the USYNT U17 World Cup side. He plays mostly as a 10 but has also played deeper.

Rudisll had trialed at Feyenoord last year. He's still 17 but can move now because he holds an Italian passport.

From that team, players who would be in serious contention for a spot on our current top 23 include:

Meola and Friedel
Earnie and Tab
Reyna and Harkes
Wynalda
Dooley as a jack knife with experience would be the only central defender that would be considered since he had a modern distribution game even back then.

Hugo and Wegerle were slightly past their best in 1994.

I doubt that all of them would make our top 23 but I could see ~ half cracking our top 23.

I'm not sure what brought all of this on anyway. Kinda like to know what drove Wynalda into this frenzy.

The funny thing is even here we've acknowledged that our starters aren't "significantly" better than the starters from any of our other good teams. It's the depth of the player pool that's so impressive today compared to the past.

That said, look at the ages of that team. Most of the starters were firmly in their prime. In fact, Reyna was the only one that was really young. Meanwhile, Pulisic is the old man of our current crop and he's not even 25. I don't think we can judge this current team until the 2026 WC, since 2022 should've been the crossover from the previous generation to this one... only the previous generation was pretty devoid of talent.

Funny thing about his complaint though... if you put a 23 year old Wynalda in the Bundesliga today coming off a 15 goal 3 assist year like in 92/93..... he probably gets sold to a bigger team for $20-25M in the current market.

It could just be noise to influence the ongoing Caciedo negotiations. I think Adams would get good minutes at Chelsea if they don't buy Caciedo, but if that deal goes through it would obviously be more difficult for him. I'm not sure Ason Villa is much better though.

Chels losing essentially all of their guys in that role... you'd think there might be a spot. but their books are so large, I'm sure they've got 6 guys already on their books at the 6 spot. but adams would be a great Kante-lite... for the money.

I have no idea who he'd be competing with at Chelsea or Villa... anybody else?

Agree but I will point out that I think in addition to the depth I do think our starters are better and across the board I’d say we are better in ALMOST every position. I understand that there’s a lot of factors that went in to us having most of our top players not playing for top teams but the fact is the number one reason is because they were not good enough.

Everyone stopped talking about this after the WC, but it's reason #1 I've got the dude to the left in my AV. I don't think he's a great coach, but, given its youth, this team overperformed last year IMO.

Not only does he get some of that credit (only a little bit, I think coaches mostly don't matter), but I'm betting a team of 15-deep in-their-prime killers playing on home soil is going to be an insanely tough out in 2026.

If you're betting against Berhalter you're really betting against the 2026 team (see above: coaches mostly don't matter IMO) and, based on the in-their-prime and at-home historicals, that seems super contrarian and short-sighted to me.

But... Keller, Friedel, Thomas Dooley, Alexi Lalas, Tab Ramos, John Harkes, Eric Wynalda(?), Marcelo Balboa and Earnie Stewart all played for top division teams in Mexico or Europe at some point in their careers. Howard, McBride, Joe-Max Moore, Dempsey, Altidore, Reyna, John O'Brien too (later). And many of those guys played together for a long time. They were also in their primes, scrappy as hell, and hungry.

But the teams and minutes are better now on average, and there are more of them doing it at the same time. So there's a gap, but it's not quite as big as it gets made out to be. And 11-25 are miles better today. IMO.

He is saying the players today are playing on better club teams than the players of the 90’s. Which is true. But as it is also acknowledged there were mitigating circumstances back then.

Sorry I think I may have misunderstood your initial post. I thought you were saying our CURRENT guys aren't on top teams because they're not good enough. In that case I was just saying Milan/Milan/Fulham/Fulham/PSV/PSV/Dortmund/Juve/etc may not be Barca/RM/Bayern/Man U/etc but they're still better than the teams the '94 guys were playing on at the time.

But sounds like you were initially referring to the '94 guys not being on top teams, not the current guys.

In their friendly today, he was on the roster but didn't start. Not a good sign considering CBs rarely rotate out.

Was it in here where his coach was quoted as saying he needed more physicality? Glad he thinks he's technical at least. Also glad he started.. that's a good sign this late in the preseason
