US Men's National Team (8 Viewers)

it is a fair question

My prediction is that the team will achieve just enough in Copa to keep him hired while simultaneously disappointing the fans.
His answer was as good as it could have been.

But you have to say... We must get out of the group, period. That's the bottom line goal. After that... Yeah, the rest of what he said. Keep figuring out how to progress in knockout competition against "better" teams.

Considering how weak the group is relative to the rest, I am not convinced getting out of the group is enough but I do think US Soccer will think that is good enough to retain GGG.

Context is important though. If we go 3-0-0 in the group but get an unlucky matchup against Brazil and lose a competitive match that is one thing.

If we go 1-1-1 in group, get through barely in second place and then lose by multiple goals to Colombia, that would make me think long and hard about replacing GGG before we get too far into the cycle.

I think the criteria SHOULD be based on how we look as well as results. Is the attack against weaker teams more free-flowing than it's previously been under GGG? Are the right players on the roster/field at the right time?

I think the criteria WILL be whether we make it out of the group. I just don't get the sense that our national team culture is like other teams that chew through coaches at a rapid pace.

Totally agree with you, even though I'm thinking more generally and not GGG job retention specifically.

There are results... And in a cup, those are important.

There's also the general eye test which is also important (for me).

Winning ugly.. it's better than losing pretty.

But I want them to impose themselves and dictate games however they need to do that... Front foot, counter punching, whatever.

It is interesting that you mentioned winning ugly.

JK was recently sacked because of that exact reason. Many SK fans were worried that he was going to be retained because they advanced to semi finals but luckily for them, the Sk federation looked beyond just the results.

The question is whether US Soccer will be able to do the same. As @zoobird correctly pointed out, we don't fire coaches easily here (and that is both good and bad)

Love the idea of a dedicated thread for the USMNT! It's exciting to see the team gearing up for the new international cycle. Can't wait to discuss friendlies, qualifiers, and tournaments with fellow fans. #ibelieve 🇺🇸⚽
Welcome!

It should be an interesting cycle.

As of today though, there are no qualifiers for the US. As host for 2026 we won't be playing in the normal Concacaf qualifiers. I was hoping that we would join another federations qualifying process to make up the numbers in a group to get some more high quality friendlies like Qatar did last cycle but as of now nothing is lined up.

Real Betis remain very happy with investment they made to sign Johnny Cardoso from Internacional.

He's candidate for U23 of the Month in La Liga and the club believes in his potential, after very good instant impact.

Awesome.

It's so weird. Nothing he's shown for the US suggests a guy capable of starting in la Liga... So Ive loved watching this happen. At the very least, another legit name to play the 6 instead of he who won't be named or stay healthy

yeah it is very odd. Almost everyone who has seen him play for the US has been underwhelmed. He has looked like an average run of the mill pro in MLS.

But we must be missing something or he has just not had enough minutes to show yet.....

He's also on the younger side, right?

But yeah... Has struck me as slow of foot and thought when I see him out there, and without the skills to make up for it. But obviously a very limited sample size.

Yeah, Johnny is interesting. I think we all expected him to be a focal point a few years back when they brought him in for.....I think it was Olympic qualifying?.....and he just wasn't that great (and we didn't qualify).

seems like he's taken a big step. Certainly good news.

he is 22 now. It is an excellent age to be making the next step.

here is what Jesse Marsch said about Johnny recently. Note this is almost all negative. Jesse is clearly not a fan

Just seeing the written bit on the link... Yeah. That's been my takeaway too.

I'll have to watch him play for Betis

Watch the vid when you get a chance. Jesse does a very nice video break down of his issues in his most recent game with Betis.

He may have cherry picked the plays to comment on but his analysis seems decent.

I will, thanks.

But I also want to watch him play live on TV. The 6 is hard to gauge from tv watching... So much of it is about positioning and off the ball (and camera) work. But the speed of foot and mind I mentioned earlier... That sounds like Marsxh touches on... Should show up on screen.

That's been my takeaway too.
Yep, he just looks slow. Not as slow of thought as he seemed at first, but slow of foot for sure.

I would have bet a great deal of money he was going to struggle in La Liga. I can't figure out how he stepped immediately into a team right at the edges of a Euro spot and has implanted himself completely. I think the only game he has not played 90 minutes was the very first. Been nothing but 90 minutes in all comps since then.

And now according to the Fabrizio tweet, he is up for young player of the month in La Liga. in a league LOADED with young talent............... WTF...

I have been wrong about players a lot before but this feels like I am not even watching the right player.

It's possible that the tactics and the league itself plays to Johnny's strengths and hides his weaknesses. I haven't watched any games of his so I couldn't day, but la Liga games can be slower paced than other leagues with less end to end action. If he doesn't have a high motor, he might be OK playing a more deliberate, space oriented game rather than chasing down attackers and bombing forward with runs.

Yeah, probably the same with Messi.

Scally playing left back today. I think it's his first start on the left side since August. His flexibility is pretty key. He's started as a RB, RWB, CB, and LB.

And while, in my head at least, he has not been getting the minutes, he's started 19 of 23 now (and played in all 23) and is on pace for the most Bundesliga minutes of his career, which given he's 21, probably isn't really saying that much.

I'm watching the United - Fulham game and maybe it's just seeing Jedi with the short hair, but his game looks more mature. He's obviously a jey player for them and his defense has steadily gotten better. Playing at this level has done wonders for him.
I've watched the whole game.

Uniteds best defense is letting Jedi have the ball in dangerous spots. Every touch of his... Especially the final touch... Looks like the first time he's ever seen a soccer ball. It's been a few weeks of this too. Fulham should/could have 5 goals at this point... Jedi over and over in a great spot on the left and can't the ball even rotely near his teammates... Even when there's no defender on him. It's making me stabby.

This Reyna loan is so frustrating. Even with Forest down the entire second half, they used 4 subs before putting Reyna on in the 81st. Hope he can make something happen :(

I posted a chart of US players minutes, goals and assists in the top 6 leagues in Europe a few days ago. I think only Jedi, Pulisic and Weston have played more minutes than Scally this season.
