US Men's National Team (35 Viewers)

RBW is also listed as a forward. Both start at LB in MLS. Miller has played some wing and I think did so in the U17 World Cup last year. He may do that here as well but I'll be shocked if he's not a LB/LWB long term.

The two most interesting names in this group are RB Duru and FWD Dausch - two dual nats that haven't played with us before. And obviously Banks being there is awesome. This is a LOT stronger group than played in the CONCACAF U20s this summer.

Just saw that 2005 CB Greyson Dettoni was also invited to the U20 camp but was unable to join. I've been wondering why we never call him.

Right now he is playing with Bayern II and has started the last 20-25 games for them. I don't think he's elite but will likely settle in as a mid-tier Bundesliga starter. But he's a 6'6" centerback training at one of the best clubs in the world in his formative years.

Would be interesting to get 06 Banks, 05 Wynder, 06 Akinmboni, and 05 Dettoni in a camp.

Cole Campbell was not called into the U20 - which is super weird - but he's on the bench today for Dortmund. May be getting a debut.
I was thinking about this as well. Not only was he missing from the U20 squad, the US also released a U19 squad last week, which Campbell could play for I think, and he was not on that squad either.

I can't see any possible way he was not considered with in the top 50ish players in this rough age group so I have to assume something else was in play (he either turned down the call or there was some agreement that it would be better to leave him where he is for the time being).

Agreed. Guessing Dortmund wanted him to train with first team instead or something. No way we just chose not to call him.

Everything coming out of Dortmund is he's been electric to start the season but no room on the senior side to play him. Unfortunately, it appears match conditions were not right today to give him a debut as Dortmund fell 2-1 at Union Berlin.

Remind me.. is he a dual? Is there a chance they're trying to keep him for club while also keeping alive his alternate nationality? (I'm assuming its German if so)

he was a dual but he is forever cap tied to the US as he used his formal one time switch to swap from Iceland to US earlier this year.

I get as excited as anyone about our best youth prospects, but it's kind of sobering to think of all the guys whose career trajectories aren't following a great path.

I just looked up a couple of names that were discussed in here a while back...

Evan Rotundo - last seen scoring boatloads of goals as a 16 year old playing in the U19 level in Germany(?). Now a 20 year old struggling to get playing time in the Luxembourg league.

Adrian Simon Gill - At one point our top prospect in his age group. Tore his ACL around this time last year. Hasn't returned to competitive play as far as I can tell.

Exhibit A... Freddy

Elite youth players making the successful leap as a pro... Wish the numbers were higher.

yes, our failure rate is really not that much higher than any other nation when it comes to prospects, that is why it is all a numbers game as you mentioned.

Gio hurts more than most because he made the hard leap from prospect to high level pro so quickly, and then has been nothing but disappointment since.

Balogun appears to be finding his form. Another start today and another goal as well. A really really nice strikers goal. Watch how he accepts the ball which allows his opening with a fabulous first step and sweet finish

I don't see Balogun in that video
click it again
Really, really nicely taken from first touch to last.

Would be amazing to get get Balo firing regularly like that... He definitely has it in him. With pepi and sarge hitting their stride as well, then it's about figuring out how best to use them for the US

It feels like it is coming together for him. 3 straight games with a goal, and all 3 games were wins for Monaco and Monaco is now in first in France.

Here is very likely the goal of the year for a Yank, from an extremely unlikely source and location. (Note time and score when goal happens)

for those unaware of this players colorful past, here is a snippet from his wiki

==================

On August 20, 2021, it was announced that Miljevic signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with CF Montréal.[3]

On September 13, 2023, it was reported that Miljevic, against the terms of his contract with CF Montréal, played three matches in the indoor amateur Québec Calcetto Soccer League, using the false name Matko Milojevic, where he tallied six goals and two assists. Additionally, while spectating a match in the league, he was also alleged to have spat on and struck a player in the face, resulting in his ejection from the soccer centre where the game was being played and lifetime suspension from the league.[7]

On September 18, 2023, MLS terminated the Miljevic's contract for engaging in conduct detrimental to the league and violating his Standard Player Agreement.

Weston on bench today as Juve do some rotation. Coach had this to say about Weston

==========

Thiago Motta:

"McKennie's recovery of the ball for the third goal scored in Leipzig was extraordinary. It's fantastic for a coach to have players like that at his disposal. I'm happy that Weston is part of this group, he's important for us."

The comments about him playing Sunday leagues in Montreal are freaking money. Guy is legend.

This link. :lmao:

He went from Matko Miljevic to Matko Milojevic to hide his identity so he could play in the QCSL. LOLOLOL

Our injured starting eleven...

Balogun
Gio-Booth(?)-Weah
Adams-Maloney
Paredes-Richards-???-Dest
???

Not 100% sure that some of these guys are injured, but I think so. We need another CB and a goalie, and we either have to play Paredes at LB or move Dest over and put Weah at RB (with Paredes as the other wing)...but this team definitely rivals our healthy team right now.

this is the best part of the story.........what a clever name change :lmao:

I had to read up on this guy. What a great goal. Miami-born of Bosnian Croat descent whose parents immigrated to the U.S. from Argentina, where his grandparents had settled after WWII (I will not speculate about their loyalties during WWII). He's twenty-three and played with both Argentine and U.S. national teams in tournaments and friendlies. He won the Argentinian Open for Tae-Kwon-Do and was champion in Argentina at the ages of fourteen and fifteen.

What a life already.

And, of course...Balogun has a potentially serious shoulder injury
Damn it, I was hoping this was just a knock...........and just when he was finding his form again too.

I wonder if he will be replaced on the roster or if Poch will just use Sargent and Pepi....

Dislocated shoulder for Balogun. Expected to be out multiple weeks.
Figured as much from what was going on.

Bad news is missing camp and time when he was getting into good form.

Good news is this hopefully shouldn't be anything that limits him in the future, so rest and heal up and wouldn't expect any issues moving forward.

We just can't have nice things.

Milan down 0-1 at the half... Fiorentinas goal came off a throw in in the attacking third with the receiving player then dribbling around CP and scoring.

But at least CP didn't get hurt.

Yet.

Leao has done **** all again, but will likely play 90 while CP gets the hook. At least, that's the way this season has played out so far. /Whine

Balogun, Johnny, and Weah all removed from roster due to injuries.

Tessman, Zendejas, and Vazquez have been added
This one seems strange. He played today and went 90. And they didn't even use all their subs.
I think the team might have asked Poch to let him stay. I saw this online

=============

Cardoso has been battling an undisclosed muscle ailment for much of the season, which has limited him to eight appearances in all competitions, with just five of those starts.

Good call. I had to step away for a bit, but came back just in time to see Chukweze (Pulisic's replacement) take a shot from near the goal and literally hit the cone in the corner.

I mean, it could be they're doing it to keep him fresh and healthy, given his injury history

Another PK, this time Tammy takes it and not CP.

Saved again.
Bad karma for not having CP take it.

I think in his extended opportunity as their pk taker Pulisic was 1 for 1.

Feels like the rest of the team is a combined 1 for 5 this year.

Actually curious whether the manager is choosing who takes the penalties or just letting the players decide. Theo looked awfully protective of that ball before his (weak) shot today.

If the players are deciding this may be my biggest soccer-related pet peeve (and I have a lot). This is SO, SOOO, SOOOOOOOOOOOO stupid. It's an extremely high leverage situation in a low scoring sport - any manager who doesn't decide 100% of the time who is taking the kick should just be fired on the spot. Don't even bother letting them finish the game.

True, but you'd think tie games and down by one goal are the two situations where you'd make an exception and let him play 90. Sit him late if they're up at all or down by 2+.

Yeah... I thought id written the rest of my thought, which was exactly what you've pointed out. Feels like they're leaving Leao in so he can flash some magic or because he's seemingly such a orimaronna that he looks like he'd throw a multi week hissy fit if they pulled him

With Cardoso joining the injured list (although it's not much of an injury, considering he just played 90 minutes with it) we can move Maloney to the open center back spot and put Cardoso in a double pivot with Adams.

Just one more position to fill. My money's on one of our goalies getting injured in the next week or so. I realize that's going to be a challenge with most of them not playing, but my money is on one of them rising to the challenge.
