US Men's National Team (5 Viewers)

He never looked to have the temperament needed to be a head coach (but he is the exact player that Poch is quickly realizing we lack)

REPORT: Jermaine Jones hasn’t coached his #USL club since August 30. An independent investigation substantiated six safeguarding charges against the ex-midfielder.
What are"safeguarding" charges?
I saw this..

"The summary of that investigation said it had “substantiated” repeated instances of harassment, retaliation and hostility from Jones toward members of the team."

Remember this story goes back a while. Germany Jones took the interesting stance when he was hired saying he was going to cut every player he could find because he could not trust their loyalty. Sounds like things never improved from that audacious beginning.

I saw a headline in my feed about big layoffs at US soccer, despite record gains. I couldn't find it once I had time to read it... anybody know more?

They cut about 10% of the headcount and are moving from Chicago to Atlanta.

I don’t have a ton of insight, but my own sense was that there was some bloat in USSF stemming from the kind of top down plan to treat everything from the senior team to youth development the same. I.E, the plan written by Reyna where everyone was going to play a 4-3-3 with the same emphases.

I think the new model is probably to be too heavy. Hire top coaches and trust them to figure out how to use the player pools. I think youth instruction will stay the same, but I doubt we’ll be as worried about whether a U-17 team plays the “US soccer way.”

So what lineup do we want to see?
And what do we expect to see?
I have been thinking about this during the run up to these games and I really have zero idea.

Poch mentioned that he prefers a 4-2-3-1 but whether we have the right players healthy enough for this I have no idea.

With so many players out injured I am not personally looking at lineup decisions, specifically since Poch looks to have chosen this squad differently than he intends to going forward (where it appears he is going to put extra emphasis on playing time at the club level).

I am more going to focus on attitude/effort for these games.

While we said going in to the last camp that there was going to be a high chance we see low effort from the players with the coaching situation in limbo (and that is what we got), I think we can similarly say we should expect a significant up tick in effort given the likelihood that players are going to want to impress Poch and that he has been preaching "run your *** off when you lose the ball" all week to the players.

From Sciaretta:

U.S. U-19s defeat Sweden today 4-1 in Spain

- Two goals scored by Jykese Fields off the bench
- Cruz Medina scored
- own goal by Sweden
- Zlatan's son, Maximilian Ibrahimovic, made his debut for Sweden
- Substitute Kalipha Jawla scored Sweden's only goal.

Pochettino says Pulisic right now is one of the best offensive players in the world. He adds he's a little worried about his workload.
Nice to hear, although if I recall, Poch was a fan of Pulisic's last summer and tried to get Chelsea to keep him. I think Christian is the exact type of player Poch likes.... skilled, but also super hard working.

I wonder if the workload thing means we only see a half or so of CP this weekend. Wouldn't mind it TBH.

For those that may have listened to Poch speak in the past, is he typically very up beat and positive about his teams? I am just trying to gauge if this is normal coach speak or if he is really happy with that he has seen so far this week for the US.

Dest opened his new soccer court today in Holland and I saw clips of him moving well and lightly shooting with ease.

He was expected to be out 9 months after his ACL surgery (this past May) so he still may have a long way to go but it was encouraging to see him moving and shooting with out any visible discomfort already.

Or it's discouraging that he's moving around like that at a non-essential event.

I kid.
Mostly.

That's one guy they need badly, especially with Gios disappearance. Hate to see him have any setbacks.

I guess we understand the general sentiment even if Poch was not entirely accurate here about his minutes

==========

Mauricio Pochettino on Christian Pulisic’s workload:

"He's playing every single game, every single minute. That is also a thing that we are a little bit worried. Sometimes we need to protect [him]. We'll see, because he arrived a little bit tired. [We need to] build a very good relationship with the club [AC Milan] and try to help. And when we really need him, he needs to be in form, happy, strong and the quality is there, because he has an enormous talent. He's a fantastic player”

It’s funny, I was going to post something along the lines of “These press conferences sound almost identical to his time at Spurs”

I think he is simply trying to build a positive atmosphere around the team, and he speaks like that in most instances. He kind of understands his audience(s) - players, US Soccer, and fans - and gives them what they want.

The challenge will be in how much he is reaching the players, with such limited contact/training. Eventually results will be doing all the talking.

What??!

If that's true, that's utterly insane.
That does not make any sense to me. I would like to say something got lost in translation but it was Ream speaking.

If he said 4 hours then maybe I could have understood.
Yeah, I saw that the other day and thought it sounded odd. Maybe there are parts of practice that are not 'out on the field'? Maybe he meant scrimmaging for two hours without any breaks in between?

Otherwise...no wonder they never look like they have any idea what they're doing when they play together!

Yeah, exactly.

Maybe there's new sports science where they limit their training session to smaller times and then have small breaks before continuing? Just spit balling... Because 2 hours- my 13yo daughter does that twice a week. As does every single kid doing every sport out there.

He had to have meant that they played an actual 2 hour match/scrimmage straight through. Like a 120 minute running clock with no stoppages essentially.

I think a 2-hour training session - in season - is fairly rare at that level. I would guess most training sessions are closer to 1 hour than 2, and then supplemented by strength and conditioning and also video review.

And, I assume it to mean 2 hours of training - so not necessarily 120 straight minutes of running, but also excluding warm-ups, and fairly short breaks between different stations.

Fields plays for Hoffenheim's U19s but is a 2007 that just turned 17. He's scored 9 goals in 7 games so far this season.

German dual nat though I don't think he's played for any YNT's prior to this. Not sure why but he moved to Hoffenheim from Norwich so maybe he got lost while he was in England. Hopefully Matarazzo can be our secret agent on this one as we can use some strikers.

4-3-3

Busio and Morris over Swag.
I don’t hate this, actually. Having to prove it has been good for Wes at Juve. But I also think this shows that Poch is planning a 10/8/6 midfield with Busio in the Gio role for this. Which would mean this is Musah over Swag in the box to box/shuttler/Moussa Dembele role.
Or not. LOL. Musa on the right. Brendan at the 10.
