using L/R platoons regularly (1 Viewer)

i've used it in the past with some success, but this season i think i may have to rely on it. i have a low BA team and couldn't pass up delgado really late for my IF slot (basically a 2nd CI). i don't need all his power, but certainly can't take another 500 ABs of sub .275 avg.

i am considering subbing in daric barton everytime delgado faces a lefty (.288-.244 R/L split over last 3 years). that is unless barton breaks out and completely overtakes delgado in my lineup.

i'm also planning on benching corey patterson everytime he faces lefties b/c he hits .234 and rarely steals against them.

those are just some examples, but i'm wondering if anyone out there has become effective at using platoons to get the good out of a player while minimizing the bad.

i'm hoping this could help save my avg. this year. i've got a great and deep lineup and the last thing i want to do is make a trade for avg.

any thoughts would be helpful.

If you have the time to it can be very effective. I haven't really dabbled with all the guys on my roster just yet (still have some time until opening day) but until Josh Hamilton proves himself he will not start for me whenever Texas is going up against a southpaw. From what I've read, he may not even start for Texas in those games. I have Votto, Wigginton, and Bourn to sub as needed. My team is hurting for speed, so Bourn will likely get the start those days in my team's case.

Once Granderson gets healthy he may suffer a similar fate, especially as I can't start all of the guys I want to in that league (can only start one of Tavares, Billy Butler, Matt Diaz, Milledge, and McLouth).

Two years ago in a daily-transaction league I platooned Dave Roberts and Curtis Granderson, neither of whom could hit lefties. I had to look at a Probable Pitchers page every morning to see if either was facing a lefty. It worked out well -- I won the league -- but it was a lot of work.
