Actually did this on an old car my daughter drives now. Worked fine. Not sure the gel type would work but I used Arm and Hammer toothpaste since we had it. Turtle Wax makes a really good product if you don't want to go the toothpaste route.
It's just any mild abrasive - use straight baking soda mixed with a little water. The abrasive basically polishes the plastic. No need to spend $ on toothpaste. Works faster/better if you have an orbital and a foam pad too.
