UTEP Study shows NFL officiating has been biased toward KC Chiefs (2 Viewers)

The NFL is a game to us, to Goodell the NFL is sports entertainment. The NFL is a business first and foremost. A highly profitable business.

When Mahomes first came on the scene the Chiefs became very popular, then having the biggest pop star in the world going to all their games and getting a lot of in game camera time is not by accident. Swift opened up a whole new audience to the NFL. Chiefs + Swift are very good for the bottom line. The NFL would not want the Chiefs to not make the playoffs.

Do I think the refs were told to make or not make calls in the Chiefs favor? No, in today's world one disgruntled ref would rat it out.

Do I think they do get some favorable calls or non calls? That question has been going on for years and now a college is doing a study on this topic.

This could be just perception but It does seem some calls/ no calls go more in their favor than not.

Just an opinion here, but aren't referees, as humans, going to naturally subconsciously favor the established team and/or home team and/or charasmatic player without there being any conspiracy whatsoever?

Oh and the idea that Roger the Dodger pre-arranged Kelce's love life is hilarious to contemplate...

I missed the part where I said Goodell "pre-arranged" the Kelce-Swift romance.

The fact that Swift came on the scene was a bonus to the NFL is drawing in the Swifties to the audience. And as you well know Swift got plenty of camera time during KCs games.

Taylor Swift's presence at NFL games significantly boosted viewership, particularly among women and teenage girls. During her attendance, viewership spiked, with certain games seeing major increases in ratings and the Super Bowl LVIII becoming the most-watched non-news telecast in history. The "Swift effect" brought in a whole new audience for the NFL, leading to higher viewership, increased merchandise sales, and significant brand value for the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Key impacts on viewership

  • Massive growth in female viewers:
Viewership among teenage girls surged by 53%, while women aged 18-24 and 35 and above saw increases of 24% and 34%, respectively

I managed to download the full document.. as a pdf. Any recommendation on loading some of the data here? Tables especially of interest.

The data implies the KC Chiefs maintain a "home field advantage" trend of penalty calls during the post season.
It also contends that TV viewership plays a role.

For those who want to know ... this study covered > 13000 penalties over the 10 year span.

my mistake...I read your comment (incorrectly) as:

then having the biggest pop star in the world going to all their games and getting a lot of in game camera time ARE not by accident

you do go on to point out that the NFL had/have motive to conspire to get favorable calls....which is what led to my rhetorical question about unconscious bias being a simpler explanation than conspiracy theory....but I ain't mad at ya.

I never said that either.

I stated it is proven the Chiefs+Swift boost NFL game ratings. That is a fact. There have been many games where Swift has been on camera 5-6 times to see her reactions.

I do think if Jax and Chiefs were fighting for the last wild card spot the NFL brass might be quietly hoping for a Chief win. If that involves favorable calls it up to the people watching to decide. It has gained enough attention a college in Texas is doing an actual study on it. That was before last Sunday nights game.

If I were the NFL I would much prefer the Cowboys go to five superbowls, winning four, in six years rather than the Chefs. Missed opportunity imo.
