Vegas (2 Viewers)

Heading to Las Vegas for a work trip in mid-June. I have been tasked to plan the dinners for two nights since "you have been there".

Looking for cool but not crazy expensive. Original Yardbird is here in Miami so while it's not out, I can get there anytime I want so it's not very special. Granted most of the people that will be attending the dinner aren't from Miami so I'll have to keep that in play.

Don't necessarily want high-end steak place because they tend to be ridiculously overpriced and even though I'm on expenses, no sense in having to get CEO approval for a crazy expense report.

Has anyone been to the new Lotus of Siam location yet? I love that place but need it to be a little more upper-scale than their original location in order to satisfy the snobs in the group (and our customers).
In my experience, if you are in charge of a group dinner with people new to Vegas, you better have a damn good reason to go off-strip.  Degree of difficulty is very high.

Does Bally's have the go-go dancers around the blackjack tables on Friday/Saturday nights? Any others? I can't remember which casinos still do this.

(going in August on a player's promotion offer)
Rio does.

I'm set for May 31 WSOP event.   PM me if you want to drink some beers if in Vegas then.

I assume you mean outside of walking distance. Otherwise how is it any different to get in a cab and say "firefly restaurant please"?

The Pleasure Pit still exists at Planet Hollywood.  Golden Gate and the D downtown have them too.  Haven't been elsewhere recently to be able to tell you on any others.  I know a lot of places phased them out.

Drop-in..

Do NOT pay to see the Vegas Live comedy show at Planet Hollywood...if you were so inclined.  Not funny and a huge ripoff.
Just came here to ask if anyone is familiar with the LV Comedy scene.  I've seen a few shows (magic, singing) there but never been to any of the comedy clubs.  Going next month, was thinking about checking out LA Comedy Club or Jokesters (based on Yelp reviews).

I don't like seeing comedy in big arenas; I've passed up tickets to some pretty big names over the years as I'd much rather see them in clubs.

It's obviously not difficult to get a taxi, but most people who are new to Vegas would like to see the sights on the strip and/or keep the party going.  Every time I've gone off-strip with a group, it tends to kill the energy when waiting for a taxi after a big dinner.  Not to say you can't go to Firefly and have a good time, but if I was hosting a group of newbies, I'd play it safer at nearby casino with plentiful options of bars, restaurants and gambling.

This conversation is like deja vu to me. When we were there for my friends bachelor party and I suggested Firefly like 3 or 4 people were so opposed to the concept of off strip. Like it was some weird random black hole. The bachelor looked the place up and decided he really wanted to go so it ended all debate and discussion, but had that not happened we wouldn't have gone because if people have already made up their minds that going off strip is a problem, it would have been a problem. We had a blast, everybody found plenty to eat that they liked, the pitchers of mojitos and sangria flowed and the beer nerds had their fill of a solid beer selection. When it came time to settle up for the bill, people were even happier since it was like half of what dinner was the previous night for only like 2/3 of the group.

If the group is fickle enough that waiting a few minutes for a cab after dinner will somehow kill the mood then I would avoid. To be honest with you the wait beforehand is probably the bigger risk since Firefly is a crazy popular place. Pretty much a nonstop stream of cabs and ubers dropping off and picking up. The place has to just print money. I dont remember if they take reservations or not so that is probably worth a call to find out. IIRC we went fairly early since everybody had been up since pretty early in the morning due to the time change and it being the first day.

Wow, the food at Firefly looks awesome

Director of the South Point sportsbook was asked on twitter for his favorite dt/off-strip restaurants in Vegas:

Chris Andrews‏Verified account @andrewssports

Downtown: Hugo's (in 4 Queens), Andiamo (The D) are the 2 best. Off Strip: Italian American Club (East Sahara), Piero's (Convention Center Dr) , Firefly (Paradise Rd), Elias (Durango Dr). Those are my favorites

I've been to Hugo's Cellar.  Excellent steak house.  Really cool vibe.  Almost feels like you're in a 20s era speakeasy.  Very good food.  Bit on the pricey side, but still felt cheap compared to strip steakhouses.

Looks like we've got a mid-June trip getting planned as the wife has a conference then at Mandalay Bay.  Know that resort is a favorite of many of the posters here, but I've never been.

You know you have good food when you can survive causing the largest salmonella outbreak in state history.

They used to have 3 locations at one point. My wife and I went to the western location and when we walked in, we were one of 3 couples. We couldnt believe it. We decided to yelp that location and that is how we found out about the outbreak a few months prior. We still ate there since we figured it would probably be the cleanest their locations had ever been.

Their business went down 80%. They closed all three locations and reopened a brand new place with a much nicer kitchen that they didnt have to share with another place anymore. It took a while, but their business is back to normal and back to being a local and tourist favorite. As far as I know they never found out exactly what caused it, but all of the equipment was fairly outdated.  They went from 1 location with a shared kitchen to 3 locations in a very short amount of time and just overextended and didnt leave too much money to upgrade the initial location.

Was there last night. Going back in 2 weeks, this time for fun vs work. Definitely fewer people walking around. Don’t think their business has recovered yet. Stay away from Border Grill. Man has that place turned to ####. If you like rock you have to see Phoenix. 10pm Thurs-Fri-Sat

What happened? My wife and I enjoyed our meals there a great deal. Probably has been 2-3 years though since we last went. I always thought the place looked unfinished.

Does anyone know when the various sportsbooks will have the Saturday NCAA tournament game sheets ready?  Will they be out Thursday night after the games?  Flying in late Thursday night and would love to have it in time for my before bed crap.

Wait, you take a crap before bed every night?

I am not sure the Saturday sheets will be available until Friday morning.

Highly recommend Momofuku at the Cosmo. Wife and I shared about 6 plates and all were excellent.
Second this. We went during "social hour" and tried each of the buns and a few other dishes for a reasonable price. It's an early social hour place, so we went from there to get a few tacos at Chino Poblano (along with their awesome margarita tasting). Finally, we saw Opium at Rose.Rabbit.Lie. It's...weird. I was very intoxicated, but I remember a drag queen, a robot, a pudgy kid with hula hoops, and a tight live band. The drink we had there pushed me from drunk to sloppy, so I don't recall all of the details.

Have to recommend Top Golf (behind MGM). I am not a golfer, but all my buddies are. it is a massive 3 story driving range with bars everywhere and a sportsbook downstairs. Really not a driving range, has 7 big circular targets with different games to play. We had 8 guys (I think they allow 6 to play at once) and we stayed for 4+ hours. It cost me $175 - that included 4 hours of playing and drinks/food. I think we had $600 to spend or we would lose it. I say "I think" a lot because I kinda lost track of time a couple of hours in, if you know what I mean.

They just built a top golf near me.  Been wanting to check it out

Just got back from Vegas yesterday.  The wife and I stayed at the Linq.  Overall it was pretty awesome, except for us being on the 9th floor DIRECTLY BEHIND CARNIVAL COURT.  Loud ### music until 4 am every day.  It was fine because it just gave us an excuse to get drunk every night to sleep through that.  Ate at the Yardbird and it was pretty good.  Had the chicken and waffles.  That syrup is amazing.  Had brunch once at House A Go Go.  That was worth the trip as well.

Tired as crap today (east coast, time change is a #####), but man do we love some Vegas.

Was VERY close to checking that out on Sunday.  We were running late for some other plans, so I couldn't work it in.

Here now, convention through Thursday then staying until Sunday to catch some hoops. Original plan was to have the girlfriend come down and join me, but she opted out so flying solo after all the colleagues and clients leave Thursday.

Anyplace around to get chicken and waffles? ;)

You could be at Roscoe's in about 5 hours, baby.

It was just terrible. The same pork dish came out 3 different ways.  Dry, dryer, then covered in sauce.  One person had 2 bites of the fish tacos and couldn't eat it any more.  They used to have items I really liked (red chile rubbed chicken, etc) but menu totally changed.  Guac was only thing reasonable and it was overly salty.  Would never go back.

The Linq has a craps table not 20 ft from the Strip walkway. They will quickly exchange your money for chips and get you in the game.

Wanna cash out? You'd better pack a lunch because the cage is a 3 mile hike all the way through to the back of the casino.

From my only trip from back in December I have the following recommendations:

1. The Cosmopolitan.

Had a Wraparound with a partial fountain view. I tried the $20 sandwich for a fountain view and the young lady asked if I needed change. She offered $55 a night for that which we declined. She did make sure that I could see the fountains from our balcony.

Worked for us

2.The Peppermill was great for breakfast.I had the Eggs Benedict.  Damn Good.

3. As stated by many here Absinthe was the real deal. We had great seat on the aisle 5 rows from the stage.

The Gazillionaire

Us in the tent

4. Maverick Helicopters

Awesome ride over the strip.

The views

The Stratosphere from the sky

5. Wicked Spoon

Had a free brunch here . Not bad. Would rather come back for dinner.

Round 1

Made to order omelette

White Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding

6. Gordon Ramsey Burger.

Farmhouse Burger

Truffle Parmesan Fries  with the wifes burger in the background.

7. RELEAF

Menu

This was suppose to stay in Vegas.

We also enjoyed Earl of Sandwich.

Dislikes include Secret Pizza

and

In and Out.

ETA

A couple of small winners thrown in.

Parlay

Money Line

Take that to the Bank

Going at end of April.  Double booked at Luxor and Golden Nugget.

1) Food suggestions downtown.

2) Weed - It's legal now right?  I saw the post above but can't get pictures to load.  Where are the closest shops?

Weed is kind of legal there.. Just not allowed to smoke it in public, or in hotels, or casinos... That being said, I smelled it all over on the street.  I don't believe they are policing it much.

1) What do you like?

2) No dispensary is a really convenient walk from the Strip, except for the two between SLS and Stratosphere. And even those might be a little dodgy at night. Downtown is the same.

The $20 trick still have a good chance of success? Or do I have to make it a benjamin to not get laughed out of the lobby?
It's always worked for me. Recent trip it plus some small talk moved me from a 1 bedroom to a wrap around suite at Cosmo. It was awesome.

At the very least, it should get you a higher floor and better view.

1) Anything.  Expensive, cheap, if you liked it, let me know.  I know nothing about DT and not really sure where to start looking.

2) That's a little surprising to me.  I assume there will be one in every casino eventually.

I see one dispensary called essence on the strip?  Is it like on the far end away from everything?

So do they charge exorbitant room cleaning rates like they would for cigarettes? Asking for a friend.

I know people that have smoked pot in their rooms because the smell dissipates pretty quickly. I've never done it though, we always smoke on the balcony since we like to stay at cosmo. They could definitely charge you though. I say leave a $10 tip for the maid if it smells like pot when you check out.

I’ll let him know. Thanks!
