Verizon Smartphones? (2 Viewers)

NOt to be a wet blanket on all of this, but I was a die-hard ANdroid guy. I bought an EVO, hooked my Dad up with an X, got my reps Incredibles....and I'm here to tell you that an IPhone is better. I switched two weeks ago and am glad I didn't wait a day longer. The iphone does everythind ANdroid does, but it does it without a hitch and is much easier to use.

Just a comment from an Android devotee turned fanboy.
C'mon Abe, I know you are now sucking from Steve Jobs teet, but to blatantly make stuff up? You are better than that.
What can't an iPhone do that an Android phone can do? Not being a wise guy, I'm genuinely curious. I have a Droid X and have never used an iPhone.
True MultitaskingAbility to customize home screens

Widgets

Notification System (better now though with ios5

Voice to text
I never used an iphone, wifey did and i had an itouch. I couldn't use an iphone because at the time it was only on at&t and I need my phone to actually be able to be used as a phone. That being said she can not believe how much better the droid phones (at least hers) is compared to the iphone. she loved that she could add docks, use custom docks and icons and change the home screens. She still is not use to being able to multitask several different things at one time and the voice recognition is something that she can't get over. One to two years ago it wasn't close to which was a better phone. Now however if you put the phones together and you want to be intellectually honest, there are droid phones that are on par if not better than the iphone.

Just found out that Wirefly doesn't charge a restocking fee if you exchange one phone for another within their 14 day window.

Another advantage for them.

Edit: Apparently neither does Best Buy.

When you buy from Wirefly, does it do anything in regards to your service?

I have an employee discount that I still use from two jobs ago that I don't want to lose. If I buy a phone from Wirefly will I lose that?

I'm in the same situation. I don't see how it can effect the company discount. I've gone thru several phones since I last worked for the company and never had a problem.i'm about to purchase a thunderbolt from letstalk(129.99) so i guess we'll find out what happens

I asked Wirefly about it and they said that the bill still comes through Verizon, so here's hoping.

$100 for that LG Rev is a nice price.

I've been planning to get a new phone for awhile now but thought I'd wait for the dual cores to come out on Verizon (which gets by far the best ratings for network in Houston).

So I find out about the unlimited data plans going away on July 7. So I want to get something before then, but the dual cores that are 4G won't be out yet.

Best Buy said they have a 30 day return policy, and then after that I can sell them back a phone within 6 months for 50% of the phone's value. Since the new phone will basically be free since I'm going to be a new Verizon customer, think I'll go ahead and get something, probably a Samsung Droid Charge, and then hope the Bionic comes out before the end of the month.

ETA: Ok, apparently you have to pay for the buy the buy back plan when you purchase the phone. I think I missed that part.

went to the verizon store today to try out the Droid Charge. I liked it, and i have 4Glte in my area, so i figured i'll get it.

But its $300 in store and they won't price match the $200 on Amazon. so looks like i have to order it and wait. oh well.

cosco has the charge for $179 for new and upgraded accounts, plus they have 90 day return policy

I went ahead and got a Samsung Charge at Best Buy, but hoping I'll be able to switch out to the Bionic if it comes out quick enough. Here's the details on their return/buy back.

$300 for the phone and $40 for the buy back. The buy back is actually $60, but if you get the tech support plan it cuts in half. The tech support plan is $10 a month, so get the bundled plan and then cancel the tech support after the first month and save $20.

If the Bionic comes out in 30 days I can exchange it and will get the Bionic at the new contract/upgrade price instead of full price.

If it doesn't come out until after that, I can get back at least 50% of the retail price within 6 months of purchase, which is currently $700 so I'd get back $350, or $10 more than I actually spent. It can actually go over 50%... they have some other used tech purchase program, and if the price for the phone there is higher than the 50%, they give you the higher price plus an additional 10%.

If I have to go through the buy back plan, I'd be paying full price for the Bionic instead of the upgrade price though, so hoping it comes out in July.

Ordered the LG Revolution for $100 with free shipping & $25 android store credit from Wirefly.com.

I think that's a pretty good deal.

just ordered the droid charge from Amazon for $199.

best place for accessories? i just have a generic rubber case on my current phone (BB tour) but i think i want a harder, smoother cases so i can get it in and out of my pocket easier.

From surfing the web it seems like people have huge problems with the battery life, or don't have problems with it, but not much in between. Most of the posts I saw on their support board people are talking like there are good and bad batches of phones, but I suspect it's probably tied more to how strong of a signal you've got.The first day I used it pretty continually and drained about 2/3 of the battery in 5-6 hours. But then I used it sparsely and it lasted at least another 5 hours, dying sometime in the night.Yesterday I used it a moderate amount over 14 hours and still had half the battery left. This is with a good LTE signal and with wifi going, but GPS turned off.

Sounds like the Droid Charge won't be coming out until August 4th, so I'm screwed there in regards to trading in the LG Revolution that arrives from Wirefly today.

Still, the more my wife uses her's the more she likes it. Battery life is what it is. I don't think I'd have been any less/more happy getting either the TBolt or the Charge. All three seem like they're good phones once you get past the nitpicking.

Where did you hear the August 4th date? Hadn't heard anything with a specific day on it.Nevermind, found it. Huh... I bought my Charge on July 2nd. So I'll miss the 30 day window by 2 days for a full price exchange. :(

I meant the Bionic, of course. But this shot seemed to imply it.

I went ahead and got the Thunderbolt and love it. Battery life hasn't been a problem at all. (I'm a light user though). Fist app I downloaded was LTE On/Off http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/05/app-gives-htc-thunderbolt-an-lte-on-off-switch/Getting an Otterbox for it tomorrow. Big phone going to make it even bigger but I know it will be safe.
I snagged a thunderbolt also, moving over from a blackberry. I LOVE everything about the phone but the notifications. I miss my flashing red notification light on my blackberry. The mail client is also slow, i get an email, unlock the phone to check the email and i have to use refresh to get the email to show up in the mail app.

From what I read in researching the different phones, Blackberry blows all the other phones away when it comes to getting your email as soon as it arrives on the server.

But that is pretty much the only thing RIM has going for it. They used to have BBM, but now that is not as exclusive as it used to be. Blackberry is a sinking ship, and it cannot keep up with the pace of technology that Android, Apple or Windows phones are advancing.

Would appreciate some phone recommendations from you all. I have to get a new phone for my job: either and iphone 4 or and Android 2.3 phone. I've been with US Cellular forever, but they won't have 2.3 until September or October. Therefore I'm looking at moving over to Verizon (and taking my family plan with me).

I have to have a phone that will tether to my work computer (thus the iphone or Android 2.3). My main concerns are ease of use, clarity of display, and battery life. I am not super adept with the latest technology, so ease of use is a pretty big deal, and I don't want to have to recharge the battery every 4 hours. 4G is no big deal cause where I live it is at least 18 months away.

From reading through this thread, it seems like the phones that would best suit me (assuming they are 2.3) are HTC Incredible, Thunderbolt, and Droid X2 - or the iphone. Recommendations within the Verizon lineup (or even outside if you have them) would be appreciated.

Ditto. I got the regular battery and also the extended battery because I've read so many bad things about the regular battery life. Not a big problem but it does seem to go from 25% to zero pretty quick. Love everything else about it - 8mp camera eliminates the need to ever carry a separate digital camera. Netflix looks great and runs smooth on it.

Is there a disadvantage to purchasing your phone and/or service online as opposed to in-store? Verizon.com has better deals than in store, to say nothing of amazon or wirefly. Does it come down to having a relationship with the salesperson? Or is there something I'm missing?

I got the Droid 3, and I love it. The slide out qwerty keyboard is hugely improved, with raised keys, numbers, and easier access to common symbols like @ and ?. The speed is noticably better, the camera is improved, my battery life has been outstanding - pretty much everything I'd have asked for in upgrading my Motorala Droid. No idea how it compares to the iPhone 5, and I don't really care. This thing is great.

None that I can see. I bought my LG Revolution (which I have come to really like) from Wirefly.com and there haven't been any issues/disadvantages whatsoever.

I wasn't eligible for an upgrade price online and there was no getting around it. In the store, the salesperson made some calls and got me the upgrade price. I was pleasantly surprised.YMMV

Agreed. I just received one of these from my new job, (Coming over from a BBTour) and this phone has exceeded all of my expectations. Fast, great UI, love the keyboard. The only downside is that it is quite a large phone due to the keyboard.

Is that as an upgrade w/ Verizon, or were you switching service? I'll be moving over from US Cell and curious if buying online might hamstring me in any way. Was thinking I'd purchase the phones online and then buy the service contract from the local store.

Looks like verizon is coming out with a slew of smartphones in the next month.

Droid Bionic

Samsung Galaxy SII(rumored to be called the stratosphere)

and the HTC Vigor

All of these should be dual core CPUs with 4G LTE.

I can't wait for my upgrade in a about a month.

It's only speculation that the GSII will be LTE... I'm crossing my fingers though.

Looks like 4G in this screenshot...assuming the Stratosphere is Verizon's GSII.http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-news/163972-updated-sgs2-rumored-bionic-coming-sept-8-a.html

If you want a big screen, you're going to have a big phone. Once you put a case on it, you're looking at a good sized device no matter how you slice it. Better to get a phone with the right features than to worry about a slight difference in size, imo.

Just got a Droid X2 for Verizon through Costco and I love it. $99 for a new phone/plan, plus Costco rebates activation fees and there was a $25 bill credit as well. Highly recommend going through them if you can.

As far as the phone, it's super fast, has good battery life for what I use it for, and I don't/won't have 4G for the foreseeable future. By the time we have it around here, I'll be ready to upgrade.

Apparently they are passing on the GSII since they will be getting the google samsung nexus prime which will be called the Droid Prime. It's essentially a GSII but better. My Bionic gets here tomorrow. I can't wait.

I'm holding out for this one, but was very tempted to get the Bionic. Curious to hear reviews on the Bionic, may yet change my mind.Either phone will CRUSH my OG Droid, which is really showing its age ~2 years in...

Bionic Review

The negative:

Let's get into the ugly. While the HDMI out worked exceptionally well, and playing accelerometer-based games on my HDTV was awesome, when it comes to Motorola's webtop interface, this thing just falls flat. Using it with the laptop dock was extremely arduous. Not only is the keyboard and trackpad extremely lousy (especially compared with Lenovo's ThinkPad Tablet dock I played with last week), but the phone couldn't handle the software. I got "out of memory" messages before the whole thing completely froze on me in a most dramatic fashion (see final picture in the gallery). I had to pull the phone's battery to restart its heart. Again, this is preliminary testing, but it bodes ill.

Lastly, there's the Bionic's screen. While it was bright and extremely responsive to touch, the PenTile technology used in Motorola's qHD display makes it super harsh on the eyes. Everything looks super grainy. And this isn't the first Motorola phone with this problem. Any time you're looking at black text on a white background you're due for some eye scrunching. It seems to be a little worse than the problems with the Droid X2, to our eyes. And while the PenTile tech helps save battery, at this point I'm sure it's not worth the trade-off.
